Background / History

Sannin and Hokage Ambitions

Orochimaru is one of Sarutobi Hiruzen’s three celebrated disciples, alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. Early in the story, he is the only Sannin permanently stationed in Konoha and holds an important village post 10.

Although already conducting human experiments, he remains fairly loyal to Konoha and intends to compete for the Fourth Hokage position. He resists taking a Hyuga or Uchiha apprentice merely to secure clan support, judging the arrangement exploitative and likely to create unnecessary complications 13.

Third Shinobi World War

Hiruzen appoints Orochimaru battlefield commander when the Third Shinobi World War begins. His duties combine military administration, meetings with senior officials, and personally fighting powerful enemies whenever the front becomes critical 53 78.

He treats Hyuga Yuto favorably, reduces the frequency of his reports, and assures him that Konoha has a strategy against the mysterious “Moon God.” When Yuto brings Mochizuki Ruri to headquarters, Orochimaru detects something unusual about her and promptly arranges their reception in the village 78 83.

Exposure and Expulsion

Yuto deliberately exposes Orochimaru’s underground laboratory during an attack under his Moon God identity. The site contains numerous corpses, including children, and reveals experiments involving cells taken from Senju Hashirama’s stolen remains. The discovery leaves Hiruzen grief-stricken and enraged 90 93.

Hiruzen leads an execution force to the Land of Hot Water to capture or kill his disciple. Despite a warning from Danzo’s messenger, Badger, Orochimaru refuses to flee. He instead faces Hiruzen and Tsunade, eventually reaching a tacit agreement: Hiruzen will abandon pursuit if Orochimaru helps offset the military strength Konoha will lose through his departure 95 97.

Master and disciple stage a trap against the Hidden Mist and Hidden Cloud forces. Orochimaru’s snakes help mortally wound Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura, while Triple Rashomon blocks Yagura’s final Water Release attack. Before leaving, Orochimaru identifies Danzo as his accomplice and warns that Kudo Shinichi may be someone they know 100.

Orochimaru is expelled for stealing the First Hokage’s corpse and conducting forbidden human experiments. His departure leaves a substantial gap in Konoha’s frontline strength, forcing Jiraiya’s reassignment and increasing pressure on other commanders 100 101 103.

Return to Konoha

Hiruzen later recalls Orochimaru and officially shifts responsibility for his human experiments onto Hyuga Yuto. Orochimaru returns as ANBU Director and a village advisor; the reinstatement encounters no resistance 196 204.

He suppresses rumors implicating the Uchiha in the Nine-Tails’ attack. Mentioning the beast’s three-tomoe eyes becomes grounds for “Will of Fire reeducation” or interrogation as a suspected enemy spy. These measures help stabilize relations between the Uchiha and village leadership, making negotiations over police-force reform possible 196.

Defeating Obito and Securing Succession

Orochimaru helps organize an ambush against Obito Uchiha, using Kakashi’s Sharingan as bait. His unfinished Cursed Seal initially prevents Obito from using Kamui, but the confrontation escalates when Obito reveals a Rinnegan and summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 205 208 210 213.

After assisting Tsunade’s attack, Orochimaru transforms into an eight-headed white serpent and personally contains the statue’s explosions. He emerges bloodied but carrying the unconscious Obito, having removed both his Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan 214 215.

The defense greatly strengthens his reputation as an heir to the Will of Fire. He selects Shisui Uchiha to succeed him as ANBU Director once he becomes Hokage 219.

During Obito’s planned execution, Orochimaru and Hiruzen kill the attacking Fifth Mizukage, Hozuki Mangetsu. Mangetsu releases the Three-Tails upon death; master and disciple subsequently subdue it, and it is sealed inside Gaara 222 223 225 240.

Fifth Hokage and the Phantom Organization Attack

By Konoha Year 57, Orochimaru is the Fifth Hokage. He approves Hyuga Yoru’s deployment against Hidden Mist, while warning the young ANBU operative that battlefield service differs from ANBU work 231.

During the Phantom Organization’s invasion, Orochimaru learns that Jiraiya has accepted Obito’s assistance and received replacement legs made from Hashirama Cells. He orders Jiraiya kept outside the village and places the reporting witnesses, Itachi and Yoru, under protective house arrest pending investigation 251.

Faced with the Five-Tails and apparently dangerous self-destructing beast soldiers, he attempts to reincarnate Minato. The remains in his canister have been substituted, however, and the technique resurrects Obito instead. Obito releases himself from Orochimaru’s control, escapes through Kamui, and later steals the stored Rinnegan 252 255 256.

Orochimaru then confronts Yuto with Manda and threatens to revive past Hokages. This is partly a bluff: he cannot guarantee that the other stored remains are genuine. Yuto withdraws with the Five-Tails rather than continue fighting 257.

Afterward, Orochimaru recalls Hiruzen and Tsunade, orders Root members placed under house arrest, and authorizes Shisui to kill anyone who resists. He also begins examining the previous Hokages’ remains to preserve the possibility of using Impure World Reincarnation safely 258.

In his latest documented appearance, a massive wound through his right chest resists his snakes’ attempts to repair it. Reanimated Minato identifies the lingering ocular power as Yuto’s 262.

Appearance

  • Black hair and pale skin, contrasted with golden, vertically slit snake-like eyes 53 219.
  • Handsome but icy features and a commanding presence that draws attention even before he speaks 53.
  • Highly mutable anatomy: his jaws can dislocate, his neck and body can extend, and a replacement body can emerge through his mouth 206 214 222.
  • Eight Branches form: a colossal, eight-headed white serpent 215.

Personality

Orochimaru is composed, analytical, and decisive. Even after learning that his experiments have been exposed, he continues reviewing battlefield casualty reports instead of panicking or immediately defecting. As a commander, he follows decisions with detailed arrangements rather than leaving their execution to chance 83 97.

His ambition and scientific curiosity coexist with extreme ruthlessness. He participates in grave desecration and lethal human experimentation, yet also recognizes the support Hiruzen and Konoha have given him. Rather than destroy that relationship outright, he negotiates an orderly departure that serves the village’s wartime interests 90 93 97 100.

His later leadership shows a greater willingness to protect others and bear consequences himself. He absorbs the Demonic Statue’s explosions, accepts the reputational risk of reincarnating the dead to defend Konoha, and declines to sacrifice Sasuke for an immediate opening against Obito. That change does not make him gentle: after the invasion, he authorizes lethal enforcement against Root 215 252 256 258.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques

  • Releases numerous snakes from his sleeves to bind, poison, bite, and constrict opponents 97 100.
  • Hidden Shadow Many Snakes Hands can bind an ordinary jonin to death, but Mangetsu escapes by liquefying his body 222.
  • Uses snakes as messengers, including a blue python drawn from his throat to summon Kakashi 206.
  • Summons Manda during his confrontation with Yuto 257.

Body Modification and Recovery

  • Extends his neck hundreds of meters to deliver a sword attack and stretches his body to propel Tsunade toward Obito 214 222.
  • Produces a fresh body through his mouth during battle 214.
  • Uses small white snakes to repair bodily damage; this recovery fails against the ocular-power wound shown in Chapter 262 262.

Eight Branches Technique

  • S-rank forbidden transformation into a giant eight-headed white serpent 215.
  • Regenerates severed heads almost instantly and excels at enduring physical damage 215.
  • Coils around the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to contain its explosions; his success depends on the statue’s diminished power after Obito’s body is destroyed 215.
  • Particularly vulnerable to sealing techniques 215.

Cursed Seal

  • Creates unstable chakra based on research into natural-energy-absorbing constitutions 210.
  • Applied through a bite, it disrupts Obito’s chakra and temporarily prevents Kamui 210.
  • Remains a half-finished product whose demonstrated function is throwing a shinobi’s body into chaos 210.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimates the dead using preserved flesh and blood and a living sacrifice; Orochimaru uses a captured Phantom Organization member during the invasion 252 255.
  • Requires trustworthy remains: substituted material causes his intended resurrection of Minato to revive Obito instead 255.
  • Control is not absolute. Obito reverses the technique’s hand-seal sequence and releases himself 255.
  • Threatening to revive previous Hokages is powerful enough to help deter Yuto, even when Orochimaru is uncertain whether his samples have been tampered with 257.

Triple Rashomon

  • Summons three massive demonic gates as a defensive barrier 100.
  • Holds back Yagura’s final tsunami-like Great Waterfall Technique 100.

Research and Command

  • Conducts research involving Hashirama Cells, surgical equipment, preserved specimens, and forbidden techniques 90 101 210.
  • Recognizes the internal signs of Hashirama Cell corrosion from Yoru’s detailed Byakugan observations 251.
  • Coordinates closely with Hiruzen in combat and delegates battlefield authority to Shisui when leaving the front 213 223 255.
  • Responds to invasion threats by increasing patrols, restricting high-rank missions, recalling powerful allies, and investigating internal sabotage 247 258.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — deployed from his mouth for extended-range thrusts and slashes; used against Obito and Mangetsu 213 222 223 256.
  • Black canisters of preserved remains — materials for Impure World Reincarnation; the supposed Minato sample is secretly replaced with Obito’s 252 255 257.
  • Hashirama Cell samples — extracted directly from the First Hokage’s corpse. Yuto steals original samples from Orochimaru’s laboratory 100 101.
  • Laboratory equipment — scrolls, containers, and surgical instruments among the materials recovered from his exposed experimental base 101.

Relationships

  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — teacher, political patron, and frequent combat partner. Their bond survives Orochimaru’s exposure, expulsion, and eventual reinstatement 97 100 196 214.
  • Tsunade — fellow Sannin and childhood comrade. His desecration of her grandfather’s remains causes lasting resentment, though they continue fighting together for Konoha 95 208 214.
  • Jiraiya — fellow Sannin and longtime friend. Orochimaru considers secretly helping restore his lost legs despite Hiruzen’s prohibition, then struggles with evidence of his cooperation with Obito 219 251 257.
  • Hyuga Yuto — former wartime subordinate who secretly exposes his laboratory. Orochimaru later opposes him as a major threat to Konoha 78 90 93 257 258.
  • Shimura Danzo — accomplice in the Hashirama experiments. Their relationship later becomes openly hostile, culminating in Orochimaru’s crackdown on Root 100 204 258.
  • Uchiha Shisui — trusted subordinate and chosen successor as ANBU Director; entrusted with village defense and Root’s arrest 219 255 258.
  • Hatake Kakashi — ANBU subordinate and partner in the operations against Obito. Orochimaru repeatedly directs him to remain focused despite his attachment to his former friend 210 217 252.
  • Obito Uchiha — enemy captured and stripped of his eyes by Orochimaru, then inadvertently resurrected through substituted remains 215 255.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — child Orochimaru protects rather than treating as expendable during the confrontation following Fugaku’s death 256.
