Background

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, and the granddaughter of Uzumaki Mito. By the time she returns to Konoha, she is the sole remaining direct bloodline of the severely diminished Senju Clan. 17 18 41

She was Sarutobi Hiruzen's disciple alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru. The three grew up together and formed a bond strong enough to entrust their backs to one another in battle. 13 48 219

Beneath her bluntness, she is deeply protective of those she accepts as her own. Her losses continue to affect her decisions, but Yuto's stated wish to become Hokage recalls Nawaki and Kato Dan, helping persuade her to take him as a disciple. 15 16

Tsunade returns to Hidden Leaf Village and chooses Hyuga Yuto as her apprentice, despite previously resisting Hiruzen's pressure for the Three Sannin to take students. Her decision restores activity to the abandoned Senju Clan Grounds and publicly signals the continuation of the Senju legacy. 16 17 19

Training Yuto

At the Senju Clan Grounds, Tsunade identifies the limits of Yuto's Gentle Fist and Byakugan, then builds a curriculum around medical ninjutsu, Monster Strength, Lion Fang Severance, and eventually sealing arts. She temporarily ends her wandering life to teach him directly. 18 19 41

After learning the severe damage caused by Lion Fang Severance, she personally investigates a way to reduce its side effects. She later provides Yuto with Flowing Cloud Steel, allowing him to use the technique without its former burden. 38 40 52
