Background / History

Red Cloud is a free-spirited cultivator who traveled the Primordial World alongside his close friend Zhen Yuanzi. He taught Wu Chu methods involving merit, including the technique for condensing a Merit Golden Wheel, without withholding knowledge for himself 79. He also identified Wu Chu's bond with the Purple Jade Spirit Crabapple as that of a companion spirit root 84.

He developed an Earth Immortal cultivation method capable of nurturing living beings. Its early effects were visible in flower fields whose blossoms remained fragrant and unwithered through autumn; the method later became associated with the emergence and cultivation of the Little Flower Fairy Clan 87 166.

Following large-scale conflicts in the Western Land and the Three Clans War, Red Cloud and Zhen Yuanzi devoted tens of thousands—and later over a hundred thousand—years to repairing damaged earth veins. Red Cloud often used the merit earned from this work to help beings on the verge of transformation, rather than retaining it for his own cultivation 218 410 415.

During an expedition to Heavenly Nether Valley, he encountered the severely weakened Butterfly Lady. He initially took her in as a Dao attendant, partly out of pity and appreciation for her incense-making, before accepting her as his disciple 230 233. After initially struggling to find a path for his third corpse severance, he developed the Dao of Benevolence and Goodness, established the Confucian Sect, and attained sainthood 702 768 769.

He values freedom and dislikes being tied down by institutions, fixed residences, or political obligations 412 638.

His candor can also become a liability. He often speaks bluntly without considering how others will react, leaving Zhen Yuanzi to smooth over offended parties 241. Though open-minded enough to accept criticism, he lacks instinctive suspicion toward manipulation and hidden malice; Wu Chu repeatedly worries that this makes him vulnerable to figures such as Kunpeng Ancestor and Minghe Ancestor 575 594.

Despite his benevolent reputation, Red Cloud has a mischievous sense of humor, particularly when teasing his disciples 814. He also gradually becomes more considerate after taking Butterfly Lady as his disciple and later his wife 410 528.
