Background / History
Chu Lie was the leading blacksmith of Bluestone Town and the guardian of his nephew, Chu Jin, after Chu Jin's parents, Spirit Hall soul masters Chu Xiao and Lin Yu, died protecting villagers from the Bloodfang Evil Soul Group. Though he hoped Chu Jin would inherit strong martial-soul talent, his concern at the awakening ceremony was solely whether the boy would be hurt by the result. 1
After Chu Jin awakened Xiao Jin and the Double Pupils, Chu Lie supported his nephew without pressing him to explain the abnormal changes surrounding his cultivation. He helped test Xiao Jin's appetite for special ores, purchased materials through merchant caravans, and kept practical track of the growing financial burden of feeding it. 2 3 4 5
He taught Chu Jin forging fundamentals, footwork, and the heavy halberd, personally crafting an eighty-jin practice weapon after Chu Jin chose the difficult weapon path. As Chu Jin's strength rose, Chu Lie successively replaced it with heavier halberds. 4 5
When Guang Ling Douluo offered to bring Chu Jin to Spirit City, Chu Lie accepted the move despite his reluctance, recognizing that Bluestone Town could no longer provide the resources Chu Jin needed. He relocated with him and established himself around Spirit City. 6 7 12
Following the River Valley Town operation and Blood Butcher's death, Chu Lie received Chu Jin's recovered family keepsakes. He reforged the broken Dragon-Patterned Spear into a dragon-patterned heart-protecting mirror and set Lin Yu's Light Feather Badge into its back, giving the finished item to Chu Jin for protection. 23
Appearance
Chu Lie is tall and sturdily built, with the physique of a lifelong smith. His exposed arms bear burn marks and small scars, while his rough hands show the effects of repeated forge work. 1
- Usually works with forge tools, a hammer, and tongs. 3 4
- Possesses a strong body from blacksmithing but has no soul power. 7
- His hands are described as harder than iron tongs from years of swinging hammers. 23
Personality
Chu Lie is deeply protective of Chu Jin. Even after Xiao Jin was judged a detrimental mutation with only innate level-one soul power, he worried about Chu Jin's feelings rather than blaming him for his talent. 1
He is practical, blunt, and occasionally humorous. He readily points out the cost of Xiao Jin's rare-material diet, yet still spends months acquiring more than twenty types of materials so Chu Jin can study the martial soul's growth. 3 4 5
Though reluctant to see Chu Jin leave home or enter dangerous situations, he respects his nephew's decisions. He supports Chu Jin's move to Spirit City and trusts him enough to accompany a guarded caravan through an ambush despite lacking soul power himself. 6 7
