He initially relies too heavily on his superior rank and frontal power against Chu Jin. After losing, however, he accepts that he failed to study an unfamiliar opponent properly, concedes the wager, and stops questioning Chu Jin's treatment. 25 He later watches Chu Jin's team battle silently and participates in testing Xiao Jin's new devouring skill. 26 31

Challenge to Chu Jin

Yan meets Chu Jin in Beginner Elite Class One after Chu Jin enters Spirit Hall Academy. He objects to Chu Jin receiving a private mimicry cultivation ground and daily access to rare dragon- and light-attribute materials, then proposes a duel to determine whether Chu Jin deserves the treatment. 23

Academy Duel

Yan enters the duel with a four-level advantage, using the Flame Lord's power, Hell Magma Rush, and Granite Rock to pressure Chu Jin. Chu Jin withstands the assault through halberd technique, Double Pupils-based analysis, and Xiao Jin's fire resistance. 24

Yan is ultimately stunned by Holy Dragon Soul Suppression, struck behind the right knee at a weakness in his soul power flow, and knocked from the arena by Chu Jin's heavy halberd. 25 He concedes after Xie Yue reminds him that a real opponent will not reveal every hidden ability before battle. 25

Continued Observation and Testing
