Background / History

Yaga first investigates Toho Che after the latter suddenly appears at a cursed-spirit attack with no identity records anywhere in domestic or foreign databases. Though Yaga recognizes Toho's extraordinary cursed-energy reserves and talent, he initially considers the possibility that the boy is a curse-user spy or an infiltrator planted at Jujutsu High. 4

Upon meeting Toho, Yaga judges his apparent sincerity and sets aside his initial suspicions. He questions him about his identity, the subway incident, and his first Black Flash, then asks whether he wishes to stay and become a jujutsu sorcerer. Because he lacks authority to decide the matter alone, Yaga escorts Toho before the higher-ups for further judgment. 4 5 6

After the higher-ups approve a probationary arrangement, Yaga informs Toho that he will remain under observation for several months before possible official enrollment. He appoints Utahime Iori as Toho's watcher and instructor, directs her to teach cursed-energy control, jujutsu knowledge, and physical training, and provides her with Toho's assessment data. He also gives Toho a fabricated identity for dealings with outside sorcerers. 8

When Utahime reports Toho's rapid mastery of cursed-energy fundamentals, Yaga orders her to begin teaching barrier techniques and the Curtain. He also asks her to watch for indications of an innate technique, recognizing that such a technique may determine Toho's long-term potential. 14

Yaga later authorizes practical cursed-spirit training after consulting with Mei Mei. During Toho's evaluation period, he reviews the student's rapid progress, mission records, and dangerous use of high-intensity cursed-energy reinforcement. Although Yaga attempts to limit unnecessary attention from the higher-ups, he ultimately submits the evaluation report and formally recommends Toho for enrollment. 17 25
