Background / History
The Dark Angels are Lion El'Jonson's First Legion. During his ten-thousand-year absence, successive generations inherited his bloodline and guarded the secret of his survival. Lion remained in stasis, protected by a sanctuary and the Watchers in the Dark 283 288.
Caliban's destruction and Luther's betrayal left the Legion divided. Warriors who followed Luther into the Warp became known as the Fallen Angels. Hunting them and concealing the truth became the Dark Angels' secret mission for ten thousand years. Belial eventually confessed to Lion that this mission had involved killings, sacrificed brothers, suspicion, and internal division—deeds the assembled warriors recognized as contrary to their primarch's teachings 288.

The Fallen
- Cypher — Personally appointed by Lion ten thousand years earlier and renowned for Dark Angels concealment techniques. Captured aboard Guilliman's ship and imprisoned under the designation “Fallen Angel” 166 262.
- Seraphax — Former Dark Angels Knight Commander who becomes a Chaos Lord and leads the Thousand Eyes Warband. Confronts Lion over his abandonment on Caliban and is killed by him, regaining clarity as Chaos corruption leaves him 301 304 305.
- Zabriel — Encountered by Lion wearing ancient Great Crusade-era Dark Angels armor 297.
Appearance
- Main armor coloration: Deep, inky green, explicitly associated with Caliban's forests at Hyperion. A later massed formation is described as wearing armor black as ink 355 496.
- Deathwing: Bone-white Terminator armor 289 324.
- Heraldry: Lion emblems appear on the dark green armor of the Dark Angels deployed against the Necrons 418.
- Ancient equipment: One Great Crusade-era warrior wears Caliban-green Mark II Crusade-pattern armor, with the Chapter insignia on the right pauldron, a company number on the left, and an Imperial aquila on the breastplate 297.
- Oath markings: Lion's accompanying warriors bear ancient oaths engraved on their armor 296.
Culture and Conduct
The Dark Angels' discipline remains visible even during their emotional reunion with Lion: his command brings every kneeling warrior to their feet in perfect synchronization. Their battlefield conduct often favors silence and precision; against Necrons and daemons, warriors strike vulnerable points without shouting or disrupting their breathing 288 420 505.
Their attachment to Caliban and their refusal to forget injuries drive the campaign against Vashtorr. After he steals Caliban's core fragment, Azrael gathers the successor Chapters for vengeance 325 326.
Life on Terra exposes another side of the Legion. Accustomed to ascetic life on The Rock, the Dark Angels struggle with chess and react emotionally to flavorful food. During a three-day celebration with the Ultramarines and Blood Angels, they exchange embarrassing secrets and begin accepting themselves as humans rather than merely weapons or slaves 347 349.
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Physical Capabilities
- Flight and void survival: Augmented warriors fly without auxiliary equipment and cross from space into planetary atmospheres 355 418 420.
- Supersonic movement: Smart Atoms permit flight at supersonic speeds 420.
- Strength: A single enhanced Dark Angel can destroy a Leman Russ with one punch; enhanced Space Marines can tear armor apart barehanded 355 420.
- Combat performance: At Hyperion, the Necron casualty report lists destroyed Lychguard, Deathmarks, Tomb Spiders, and seven Doomsday Arks, alongside 97% losses among Immortals. Reported Dark Angels losses at that point are zero 355.
Shared Senses and Tactical Coordination
- Smart Atoms allow warriors to share senses through their gene-seed and synchronize their actions 420.
- A weakness discovered by one Dark Angel can be exploited by the entire Legion almost immediately 420.
- In a coordinated multi-Legion assault, the Dark Angels specialize in destroying heavy enemy units 419.
Precision Swordsmanship
- Warriors target Necron weak points with controlled, lethal thrusts 420.
- During the assault on Nurgle's Garden, their power swords pierce daemonic energy cores and make the struck daemons vanish 505.
- Deathwing shield formations combine defensive endurance with efficient sword strikes, although overwhelming numbers can force them to contract their perimeter 305 324.
Smart Atom Weapon Enhancement
- Smart Atoms coat weapons and break down Blackstone at the atomic level on contact 420.
- Dark Angels use enhanced power swords to penetrate a Necron Titan's energy core, disrupting its shields and main beam 419.
- Heavy armor can still require sustained group effort: hundreds of Space Marines spend more than ten minutes dismantling one Blackstone-and-Living-Metal Titan 420.
Concealment
- Cypher represents an exceptional example of the Legion's stealth tradition. His suppressed presence escapes the superhuman senses of Guilliman's guards before his capture 166.
- His reaction speed is comparable to an Adeptus Custodes', but he cannot visually follow Sicarius and Malum Caedo's enhanced sword movements 169.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Power armor and Terminator armor — Standard protection for line warriors and Deathwing elites respectively 296 355.
- Power swords and storm shields — Used together by Deathwing warriors to form defensive walls 305 324.
- Land Speeders — Ravenwing reconnaissance and assault vehicles with heavy weapons 296 305.
- Jetbikes and boltguns — Used by Ravenwing defenders against boarding forces in The Rock's hangars 323.

- Sword of Loyalty — Lion's sacred blade, bestowed by the Emperor and used across Imperium Nihilus 355.
- Living Metal fragments — Collected from reviving Necrons for shipment to Cawl, with study and possible replication intended 356.
Bases and Fleet Assets

Story Role / Major Arcs
Lion's Return
Lion awakens after ten thousand years, and Belial tells him about Caliban, Luther, the Fallen, and the Imperium's transformation. Belial also recounts how a golden-and-blue Warp current brought his vanguard to the forest castle containing their gene-father 283 288 289.
The returning primarch leads his sons on a Forest Walk. Their expedition reaches Seraphax's territory, where fifty-one Deathwing and Ravenwing warriors face a vastly larger force of Chaos Space Marines, beastmen, cultists, and Orks. Lion kills Seraphax and destroys the horde, declaring the liberated planet the Emperor's 292 305 306.
Ark of Omen Campaign
Lion's fleet encounters an Ark of Omen that intends to consume it. He orders a boarding action, but the arriving Blood Angels' extraordinary power leaves his accompanying warriors stunned 315 316.
The Dark Angels join the fighting alongside Blood Angels and Grey Knights. Lion destroys the Ark's Chaos-energy heart, and Belial declares their readiness for the next battlefield 319 320.
The Rock and the Battle for Caliban
While Lion campaigns elsewhere, Azrael's defenders attempt to delay a superior Chaos force and protect the Nameless Gate. Ravenwing fights in the hangars, Deathwing holds a shield wall, and Ezekiel sustains the psychic defenses. Lazarus falls, and Vashtorr escapes with Caliban's core fragment 323 324 325.
Azrael assembles the Unforgiven and pursues Vashtorr to Dragon Spirit Star, a daemon world reconstructed from Caliban's fragments. His challenge brings Abaddon into the confrontation. Azrael falls mortally wounded, Deathwing's wall breaks, and more than half the Ravenwing knights are lost before Lion's fleet arrives 325 326 327 328.
Dante's Blood Angels relieve the defenders. Dark Angels souls gathered by Vashtorr's ritual become fuel for his attempted ascension, while surviving warriors receive the Emperor's empowerment. The campaign culminates in Caliban's recreation and Lion's public recognition of his sons 329 332 334 339 341.
Terra Interlude
On Terra, the Dark Angels encounter unfamiliar recreation and food, then spend three days celebrating with the Ultramarines and Blood Angels. Their secret-sharing includes the story of Bedivere's fear of darkness. Azrael later prepares for an arena duel with Cato 347 349 351.
Necron War
Lion leads 250,000 augmented Dark Angels at Hyperion, overwhelming the defending Necron formations. His warriors also gather Living Metal for Cawl's research 355 356.
A later deployment includes one thousand Dark Angels in a twenty-thousand-strong multi-Legion force. They attack Necron Titans and other heavy units, exploiting enhanced weapons and shared battlefield information 418 419 420.
Assault on Nurgle's Garden
The Legion reaches a documented strength of 500,000 at a joint muster of 4.5 million Astartes. Dark Angels subsequently join Blood Angels, Iron Hands, Black Templars, and Astra Militarum forces in attacking Nurgle's Garden, advancing silently while destroying daemons with precise sword strikes 496 505.
