Background / History

The Necrontyr were originally mortal beings who sought longer lives and appealed to the Old Ones for help. During the ancient War in Heaven, the C’tan deceived them, forcibly stripping away their flesh and imprisoning them within Living Metal bodies. Their apparent immortality came at the cost of ordinary life, physical sensation, and freedom 354 632.

The Necrons eventually turned against the C’tan. Hyper-energy cannons grievously wounded those material-universe gods, while dimensional disintegration devices shattered them into fragments. Captured shards were subsequently confined and exploited as energy sources 367 370 424.

After the ancient wars, the Necrons entered prolonged dormancy. Their sealed tombs preserved their military strength while other civilizations rose, declined, or disappeared. The Silent King regarded that survival as a source of pride, but also questioned whether exchanging living existence for eternal power had been worthwhile 392.

Appearance

  • Mechanical bodies: Cold metallic shells constructed from Living Metal or Necrodermis, used by warriors, nobles, and rulers 372 395 404.
  • Green illumination: Eyes, energy circuits, engines, and weapons commonly emit an eerie or ghostly green glow 371 393.
  • Specialized modifications: Destroyers replace their arms with heavy Gauss Cannons and their lower limbs with anti-gravity thrusters 392.
  • Restored bodies: Their eventual rebirth returns flesh, blood, physical senses, and family life. Peter Parker’s new body is described as stronger and more durable than his original one 635 636.

Organization and Military

The empire consists of numerous dynasties ruled by Overlords and other nobles. The Silent King can transmit orders across the empire: his summons for the invasion of Terra reaches every dynasty and tomb world in 0.3 seconds 391.

Scale and Doctrine

  • Population and reserves: The Necrons number in the trillions. The ten-billion-warrior invasion force is described as only one percent of the empire’s military strength 391.
  • Attrition warfare: They rely on enormous armies, durable defenses, regeneration, and patience; ancient campaigns could last centuries or millennia 392.
  • Continuous reinforcement: Fallen warriors can receive replacement bodies and return through teleportation, sustaining pressure on enemy formations 404 418.
  • Technological confidence: The empire openly provides the Imperium with information about Mesophit’s weapons and defenses rather than concealing its capabilities 395.

Abilities & Skills

Living Metal and Restoration

Living Metal bodies can repair damage, allowing properly equipped warriors to rise repeatedly after being knocked down 372.

  • Local restoration depends on the core remaining intact 372.
  • Consciousness can be recalled into a tomb and installed in a replacement Necrodermis body 357 404.
  • Mesophit survives his dismemberment by transmitting his consciousness through the internal network and awakening in a more advanced body 407 408.
  • Destroying core control systems or phase-transit infrastructure can obstruct these advantages 373 407.

Phase Travel

Necron phase technology enables movement through the material universe without conventional Warp travel 394.

  • Ships and troops can bypass material barriers and appear within enemy formations 391 394.
  • Deathmarks use the Phase World for concealed movement 392.
  • Consciousness packets travel through phase channels between tomb worlds and dynastic territories 408.
  • The Silent King considers existing teleportation methods detrimental to restored flesh bodies, motivating a future shift toward Webway travel 543.

Blackstone and Psychic Suppression

Blackstone suppresses psychic power and Warp energy. The Necrons used it against the Old Ones and ancient Eldar 367 371.

  • Fortresses: A Blackstone Fortress emits a field that suppresses Warp fluctuations and causes discomfort to psykers 114.
  • Containment: Trazyn combines Blackstone boundaries with Eldar Wraithbone in a four-dimensional prison, reducing Guilliman to less than a tenth of his strength 371.
  • Amplification: Blackstone armor can also stimulate the wearer’s own psychic potential, as demonstrated with Rogal Dorn 371.
  • Pariah Nexus: Coordinated generators and Blackstone obelisks form a battlefield-wide barrier that completely severs access to the Warp 415.

Dimensional and Temporal Engineering

Necron technology can create spaces and preservation systems independent of ordinary time 371.

  • Four-Dimensional Prison: Isolates prisoners from Realspace’s flow of time and prevents them from tracking outside events 371.
  • Stasis Fields: Halt time and physical processes within preserved exhibits 371.
  • Four-dimensional storage: Houses C’tan energy reserves and imprisoned shards 413 424.

Combat Analysis and Data Networks

Necron processors calculate firing solutions, evaluate battlefield conditions, and record combat data 379 395 406.

  • Mesophit’s predictive matrix calculates possible enemy actions within the next half-second 404.
  • Crypteks optimize body integrity, shields, and weapon output before combat 397.
  • These systems have limits: Titus’s attacks overwhelm Mesophit’s predictive matrix, while the resulting battle records overload an archivist’s processor 404 406.

C’tan-Derived Power

Captured C’tan shards supply energy and support some of the empire’s strongest defenses and weapons 390 424.

  • Mesophit shares shard energy from the Silent King’s throne, granting immunity to psychic attacks and the ability to banish daemons 395.
  • High-end constructs incorporate Necrodermis and weapons carrying C’tan energy 409.
  • The shards remain imprisoned in Blackstone crystals, phase cages, and beneath the Silent Throne 424.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Weapons and Strategic Systems

  • Gauss weapons — Break targets down into fundamental particles; used extensively by infantry and heavier units 257 392.
  • Phase weapons — Tear reality apart; Lychguard phase blades can cleave Titan armor 392 393.
  • Hyper-energy / Hyper-Convergence Cannons — Draw power from stellar cores and were used to wound the C’tan. Trazyn steals seventeen; the ancient examples used in his operation are expended when fired 367 370.
  • Dimensional Disintegration Devices — Destroy targets physically and conceptually, with enough power to fragment an intact C’tan. Trazyn steals forty-three 367.
  • Dust Scythe — Mesophit’s weapon, forged from a neutron star’s core and capable of cutting through a primarch’s power armor 395.
  • Pariah Nexus generators — Networked anti-psychic systems deployed throughout the fleet and army 415.

Vehicles and War Machines

Asset Capabilities
Reaper-class Battleships Large Living Metal-armored warships carrying planetary-shield-breaking weapons and Gauss turrets 391 394
Ghost Arks Fast phase-capable assault craft; each carries one hundred warriors and can deploy directly within enemy lines 391 394
Titans, monoliths, and colossi Include pyramidal, obelisk-shaped, and spherical machines. Their firepower inflicts heavy losses on human Titans 417 418
Blackstone Fortresses Major Warp-suppressing constructs; one is controlled by Huron Blackheart within the Great Rift 114

Culture and Mentality

The Necrons present themselves as ancient masters of the Milky Way: solitary conquerors confident in their technological superiority and endurance. Before the Silent King’s initiative, they had not formed an alliance with another race for sixty-five million years 360.

Their mechanical existence is repeatedly described as emotionless and soulless, making them unattractive targets for Chaos corruption. Individual Necrons nevertheless display despair, curiosity, anger, longing, and even tears. Later revelations describe their condition as the imprisonment of souls rather than genuine living immortality 356 395 463 543 632.

Restoring ordinary life ultimately becomes more important than territorial ambition. The Silent King explicitly accepts cooperation with humanity in exchange for the bodies his people once possessed, and begins planning transport suitable for their future biological existence 539 543.

Restoration

Step Chapter Result / Limits
Restoration judged feasible 543 The Silent King calculates that molded bodies, the Law of Eternity, and psychic energy can provide complete souls and biological existence.
Curse-removal and longevity plan 632 Cawl proposes using technology and C’tan authority to erase the stellar curse, with Guilliman modifying genetic vitality. The intended result is lifespans measured in millennia—not immediate natural indestructibility.
Soul release and reincarnation 635 The soul matrix releases countless Necrontyr souls from the Void Dragon’s restraints; Guilliman guides them into flesh bodies.
Sensory and familial return 636 Reborn Necrontyr regain touch, smell, temperature, and emotional reunion with loved ones after sixty-five million years.

The rebirth alarms the Chaos Gods because it is genuine restoration—not necromancy, a projection, or a manufactured replica. Tzeentch proposes seeking C’tan shards as allies against Guilliman 638.
