Background

Danzo participated in Konoha's earlier Hashirama Cells research alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi and Orochimaru. When Hiruzen ordered the project sealed after repeated failures and sacrifices, Danzo secretly kept a surviving Wood Release test subject hidden. 3

He became Hiruko's principal patron, supplying funding, experimental subjects, research materials, sealing knowledge, cursed-seal knowledge, and secret techniques in exchange for results. Danzo regarded Hiruko as reliable because of his strength, candor about his research, and lack of interest in becoming Hokage. 2
