At the voice transmission in his ear, Ferrari's smile froze for a moment. He failed to grasp why Lynn had sent him that message.
He tilted his head slightly to look at Lynn's retreating figure.
Do a good job... be bold... don't disappoint me...
He mulled over those three phrases, then slowly caught on.
"Do a good job" meant he should play to his strengths: amass wealth, manage operations, and get his hands on resources.
"Be bold" meant he should stop holding back and go all out. Lynn would take responsibility if anything happened.
And "don't disappoint me"...
With the deeper meaning of the first two phrases in mind, it was easy to understand. Lynn wanted a cut!
Was the Chief asking for a cut?
A smile spread across Ferrari's face again, even brighter than before.
He called loudly after Lynn, "I won't fail you, Chief! If I fall short in the future, I hope you'll look out for me!"
Belloc jumped at this sudden declaration.
He turned to Ferrari and saw the fat man beaming toward the doorway, the flesh of his face all scrunched together.
Belloc had no idea what had gotten into him, but he had always looked down on Ferrari and disdained associating with him, so he did not ask.
Lynn strode out of the branch without looking back.
The door behind him remained open, and Ferrari's voice drifted faintly out, as though he were trying to cozy up to Belloc.
But Belloc offered only a couple of perfunctory replies before leaving the office area.
The corner of Lynn's mouth twitched. These two clearly did not get along.
That was just as well. Two people who held each other in contempt would inevitably watch each other like hawks while working together, ready to bring their rival
