He initially insists on remaining in control, attempting to attack Huan rather than accept recruitment. Huan's offer of funding, unrestricted research, and information on the Rinnegan persuades him to cooperate instead. 22

His service to Huan remains calculated rather than wholly loyal. Although he is respectful and dutiful after joining, he continues to consider using Huan as experimental material or a future vessel should Huan ever show weakness. Both men understand this without openly confronting it. 147

History

Recruitment by Uchiha Huan

Orochimaru encounters Uchiha Huan's group while they infiltrate Kirigakure. Intrigued by Huan's Mangekyō Sharingan and two Spirit Rings, he attempts to seize control of the situation but is caught in Genjutsu that makes him see Sarutobi Hiruzen at the campfire. 22

Huan recruits him by offering funding, access to knowledge, and even the future possibility of using Huan himself as research material. In exchange for information on the Rinnegan's origin, Orochimaru retrieves the surviving Kaguya Clan orphan Kimimaro from the aftermath of Kirigakure's clan purge. 22 23

Land of Waves Operations

Huan assigns Orochimaru's group to seize Gato's assets in the Land of Waves. They capture Gato but allow him time to summon more than a hundred Konoha ninja, resulting in Orochimaru and the group being captured. 23 59

Huan rescues them during a hostage exchange and reveals that he has taken the entire Land of Waves by himself. Orochimaru is then tasked with handling Gato's wealth and later receives Danzo's modified arm, which contains Sharingan and Wood Release components relevant to his Rinnegan research. 59

As the Land of Waves develops, Orochimaru receives a Storage Soul Tool to reverse-engineer, leads research into Soul Tool applications, and is given broad authority over experimentation. 60 96

Spirit-Ring Enhancement

After examining Kimimaro's first Spirit Ring and its beneficial effect on his Bloodline Disease, Orochimaru asks Huan whether he can receive Spirit Rings himself. Huan grants him all nine at once, repairing his damaged soul and greatly improving his body. 98

He later receives Gelel Stones from Huan to raise the ages of his rings, though Huan warns that Orochimaru must strengthen his body before using them or risk exploding from the energy. 105

Konoha Conflict and the Chunin Exams

By the time of the joint Chunin Exams, Orochimaru is recognized as the leader of the Anti-Hidden Leaf Village, while Huan serves as Daimyo of the Land of Waves. He defers to Huan's decisions in public confrontations. 145

He fights alongside Huan against Teacher Chen and Maruboshi Kosuke. Using the Eight-Headed Serpent True Form, he defeats Teacher Chen and sends the body back to Konoha as a deliberate provocation toward Sarutobi Hiruzen. 146 147

Orochimaru immediately carries out Huan's order to kill Utatane Koharu, summons a giant snake to devour her, and later joins Huan in forcing Hiruzen to retreat from the Forest of Death. 148 155
