Background / History

Danzo had long prepared Root for the extermination of the Uchiha clan. When Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered the operation accelerated, Danzo stated that his forces had already been ready and arranged for Itachi Uchiha to be summoned as the assault’s vanguard. 4 29

Though he cooperated with Hiruzen, Danzo distrusted him and expected the Hokage to seize the results of the operation. Before the attack, he secretly met Orochimaru and arranged for Orochimaru to remove Itachi and Sasuke after Danzo subdued them, ensuring neither prize fell into Hiruzen’s hands. 31

Danzo also sought a replacement for his injured right arm. Learning that Orochimaru had located a body compatible with any cells, he planned to transplant multiple Sharingan into that arm and ordered Root to collect the Uchiha’s eyes during the assault. 31 38

During the operation, Danzo ordered Root to kill every Uchiha regardless of age or gender, prioritize collecting three-tomoe Sharingan, and capture Sasuke alive even if all four of his limbs had to be broken. 38

Appearance

Danzo is an elderly man who walks with a cane. His right eye is concealed beneath white bandages, and he bears an X-shaped scar on his chin. 29

Personality

Danzo is intensely ambitious, viewing the Hokage position as something he can obtain through greater power. The prospect of acquiring Itachi and Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan excites him because he believes their eyes would make his path to becoming Hokage inevitable. 38

He treats Root operatives as disposable tools rather than people. He dismisses fear as weakness, uses the Tongue Curse Root Seal to compel obedience, sends subordinates into lethal situations, and later throws fleeing Root ninja into Sasuke’s path as shields. 38 41

Danzo is also opportunistic and manipulative. He seeks Sasuke’s unexplained power, intends to capture both Sasuke and Itachi for experimentation, and tries to use Kotoamatsukami to turn Sasuke into a loyal personal weapon. 29 30 31 42

Danzo supports Hiruzen’s decision to eliminate the Uchiha, supplies Root as the frontal assault force, and summons Itachi to carry out the operation. He and Hiruzen later privately agree that both Itachi and Sasuke should also be eliminated. 29 30

Secret Alliance with Orochimaru

After Hiruzen leaves Root, Danzo meets Orochimaru in a hidden laboratory. They plan to secretly capture Itachi and Sasuke, while Danzo also pursues a compatible replacement arm for future Sharingan transplantation. 31

Assault on the Uchiha Compound

Witnessing Itachi and Fugaku’s Susanoo battle, Danzo becomes fixated on obtaining both pairs of Mangekyō Sharingan. He signals Orochimaru, orders Root’s attack, and commands the collection of Sharingan. 38

Battle Against Sasuke

Danzo’s forces are overwhelmed by Sasuke. He retreats behind Shadow Clones, forces Root operatives to delay Sasuke, and uses others as shields before being captured. 40 41

Danzo then deploys Kotoamatsukami, Izanagi, Baku, and the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique in succession. Each attempt fails, leaving him severely humiliated and captured until Sasuke later throws him aside during the battle with Konoha’s forces. 42 43 47
