He went to fetch Griphook.

By then, Darren was already waiting for Griphook in the room.

Getting straight to the point, he said, "I need to get into Bellatrix's vault at Gringotts. Perhaps you can help me. Tell me whatever you need!"

"Gringotts isn't somewhere just anyone can break into!"

Griphook said angrily.

Darren looked into his eyes.

"Don't make me angry. If goblins don't intend to help either side of the wizards, then perhaps your entire race can disappear!"

"What do you mean? Are you threatening goblins?"

"Yes, I am threatening goblins!

You know my strength. I think my war with the Dark Lord can only be evenly matched. No matter which of us wins, I don't think goblins will have a good ending.

But now, if you stand with me, perhaps I can restore goblins to their former status.

If you insist on refusing to help us, then we'll find another way in—for example, House-elves. Don't you think House-elves would be more suited to working in the vaults?"

Griphook stared at him in shock.

"Y-you actually compare House-elves to us goblins?"

"I think House-elves are far nobler than you in my eyes.

If you can't defeat us and have no choice but to become the wizards' dependents, then why can't we choose ones that are more obedient and well-behaved?"

Darren's words stunned Griphook.

He had thought Darren was the kind of kind-hearted, innocent person from the rumors. At Peter Pettigrew's funeral, Darren had seemed rather guileless too.

So why had he suddenly become so calculating?

"Are you really Darren Potter?"

Darren chuckled softly.

"If you had to survive by acting in front of others every day for a year, you would grow up quickly too!"
