Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate Breeder | 75 126 | Her established qualification. Retrospectively, she spent two years learning to produce Intermediate Pokéblocks, then stopped making them personally after gaining access to a Top-level Breeder. |
| Mega Evolution trial for Gengar | 251 292 293 | Roy supplies a Key Stone and brings Gengarite obtained from Giovanni. Agatha summons Gengar to try Mega Evolution, offering a possible way past her years-long strength plateau; the supplied passage does not establish the trial’s outcome. |
Background / History
Agatha earned much of her Elite Four standing through violent conflict. She admits that she cannot count how much blood is on her hands and says she would not have joined the Pokémon League without Oak Yukinari drawing her into it 71.
Her early Breeder training progressed much more slowly than her Pokémon’s strength. Gengar was at Gym Leader level when she began learning Pokéblock production and had reached Early King level by the time she could make Intermediate Pokéblocks. After two years of effort, she concluded that she lacked talent in the field and began relying on commissioned supplies 126.
Before formally approaching Roy, Agatha visited Mt. Pyre and secured the two elders’ approval to take him as her disciple. She also brought him a letter from Pheobe 71.
Personality
Agatha is cold, direct, and intimidating even when she is not angry. Her usual tone makes Roy expect criticism, while her presence leaves Rustboro Academy’s director struggling to hold a conversation. She dislikes lateness and maintains strict standards for herself as well as her pupil 71 90 212.
She judges battle tactics by their effectiveness rather than their popularity. When spectators criticize Roy’s use of poison, she sees nothing objectionable about winning through status conditions. She likewise approves of Roy killing an attacker and erasing the evidence, regarding his conduct as mature and decisive rather than incompatible with kindness 46 71.
Her protectiveness coexists with harsh discipline. She demands proper housing for Roy and supplies his training needs, but punishes his involvement in a Legendary Pokémon battle with one hundred lashes. She is notably more patient with Pokémon than with him 76 77 124.
Agatha wants Roy to surpass her and become a Ghost-type regional Champion. That ambition initially makes her reluctant to divert him toward Breeding, although she eventually recognizes that his Pokéblock-making skills exceed her own and seeks another teacher for him 127 212 354.
Abilities & Skills
Ghost- and Poison-Type Training
- Specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon, but five Pokémon in her top lineup are Poison types 46.
- Evaluates Pokémon through move proficiency, energy reserves, speed, and practical battle performance—not species alone 73 74 129.
- Recognizes that Litwick’s faulty Flamethrower is using Ghost-type energy because its Fire-type reserves are insufficient 73.
- Identifies Dreepy’s exceptional speed and the inadequate Dark-type energy behind its Sucker Punch 129.
- Can sense the density of Roy’s Ghost Power and changes in it over time 70 124.
Pokémon Breeding
- Holds an Intermediate Breeder qualification and can prepare Fire-type Pokéblocks for Litwick 75 76.
- Appraises Pokéblocks by clarity, impurities, ingredients, and intended use; values the supplies Roy received at 30,000 Poké Dollars 75.
- Maintains a repeatedly revised handbook of Ghost-type raising techniques and Breeding materials 75.
- Cannot reliably integrate Evolution Stone fragments into Pokéblocks, making Roy’s direct manipulation through Ghost Power especially surprising to her 126.
Physical Training and Instruction
- Treats a strong body as essential for a Trainer, particularly one using Ghost Power 78.
- Combines weighted running, human-consumable Pokéblocks, Pokémon instruction, and written study in Roy’s training 75 77 78.
- Uses Bruno’s methods to teach Roy combat-oriented conditioning 78.
- Mistakes Bruno’s incomplete Extreme Fighting Technique manual for ordinary training material and has Arbok chase Roy to stimulate his potential 128 363 371.
- Revises Roy’s schedule to include evening Pokéblock production after discovering his Breeding talent 127.
Spirit World Protection
- Handles disturbances at the Spirit World connection and assigns her Pokémon to guard its entrance 90 328 386.
- Distinguishes Ghost-type Pokémon, which consume Ghost-type energy, from hostile spirits that feed on human life force and souls 328.
- Uses Gengar to destroy escaped spirits rather than merely drive them away 328.
Authority and Tactical Judgment
- Uses her Elite Four standing to challenge discriminatory registration decisions and obtain battle opportunities for Roy 30 85 349.
- Initially avoids killing Vespiquen because removing the swarm’s leader could create further chaos 267.
- Nevertheless prioritizes human safety: if the Lilycove threat remains unresolved, she is prepared to end the Bug Tide and request a League purge of the surrounding forests 271.
- Warns Roy that his ability to empower Legendary Pokémon could attract enemies beyond even her capacity to protect him 125.
Pokémon
| Pokémon | Documented Level | Role and Notable Details |
|---|---|---|
| Gengar | Not specified | Travels through shadows, reports Roy’s actions to Agatha, supervises his training, and teaches his Ghost-types energy control. Destroys an escaped spirit with Shadow Ball and is selected for a Mega Evolution trial 71 90 293 328. |
| Crobat | 75 | Released when Agatha arranges transportation to Rustboro Academy’s Battle Training Grounds 79. |
| Arbok | 85 | Male, High-level Elite Four Pokémon with Pressure and a Poison Barb. Approximately five meters long; chases Roy, Primeape, and later Bruno’s apprentices during conditioning 128 371. |
| Mismagius | 81 | Female, High-level Elite Four Pokémon with Levitate and a Spell Tag. Guards the Spirit World entrance and later helps improve Roy’s Misdreavus’s move proficiency 386. |
- Tropius — A Level 37 male provided by Rustboro Academy for transportation, rather than identified as part of Agatha’s own team 79.
- Dragalge — Offered by Roy. Agatha considers developing either nerve-paralyzing toxins or toxins capable of killing in one strike 430.
- Gengar, Arbok, and Mismagius privately arrange rotating guard duties so they can spend time with Roy and enjoy his Pokéblocks without alerting Agatha’s other Ghost-types 386.
