Nature and Ecology
Pokémon possess individual minds, preferences, and temperaments rather than behaving as uniform creatures of their species. Some form partnerships voluntarily, while others may be captured or live independently in the wild. Litwick joined Roy without ever being placed in a Poké Ball, while a young Absol later accepted a Luxury Ball of its own accord. 2 450
- Pokémon may be male, female, or genderless; documented examples include male Duskull, female Misdreavus, and genderless legendary Pokémon. 7 38 206
- Wild Pokémon can train and battle until they reach a limit imposed by their Individual Values; Roy's custom Pokéblocks can raise that potential limit by two to three points. 450
- Pokémon can develop distinct tastes. Misdreavus dislikes Dark-type Pokéblocks but accepts Pokéblocks infused with Roy's Ghost Power. 104
- Some Pokémon show complex social bonds and self-sacrifice; Vespiquen gave her own enhancement Pokéblocks to her child rather than use them herself. 450
Ghost-type Pokémon
Ghost-type Pokémon are particularly associated with locations tied to spirits, such as Mt. Pyre, where deceased Pokémon souls are laid to rest. The area attracts and gives rise to Ghost-type Pokémon because of its dense Ghost Power. 3
- Many Ghost types can enter a spirit state, allowing them to pass through walls and conceal themselves in or around humans. 2
- Ghost types may frighten humans and Pokémon to absorb fear energy, though this is not necessarily malicious behavior. 3
- At Mt. Pyre, Ghost-type Pokémon can instead sustain themselves by absorbing dense Ghost Power. Litwick survives on the Ghost Power purified by Roy rather than draining life force. 3
- Ghost Power is highly attractive to Ghost-type Pokémon; several sought to join Roy because of it, though he could initially support only Litwick and Duskull. 3
Training and Partnership
Pokémon are commonly partnered with Trainers, who provide food, equipment, training, and battle commands. A Poké Ball is a conventional means of capture, but it is not the sole basis of a partnership. 2 67 450
- Voluntary partnership — Misdreavus became Roy's companion after he protected her Flutter Mane form from Dusknoir; she later recognized him as her Trainer. 63 67
- Poké Ball capture — Luxury Balls are used to capture and house Pokémon, including Giratina, Dragalge, and Absol. 65 429 450
- Training equipment — Devices such as Lightweight Bracelets can increase bodily pressure, track health, and create training plans tailored to a Pokémon's limits. 94
- Nutrition and recovery — Pokéblocks can restore energy, heal hidden injuries, and be customized to a Pokémon's needs. 75 450
- Move instruction — Technical Machines transmit move-related memories to Pokémon. Their quality and success rate can vary, while portable versions improve learning efficiency. 61 98
Battle Attributes
| Attribute | Function | Documented Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Indicates a Pokémon's general strength and can change through battle, growth, or transformation. | Misdreavus is scanned at Level 31, while her unstable Flutter Mane form is Level 59. 37 38 |
| Ability | An inherent trait that affects battle performance. | Levitate prevents Ground-type moves from striking the user; Pressure reduces an opponent's move usage. 7 206 |
| Moves | Attacks and techniques used in battle; Pokémon are not restricted to only four moves in this setting. | Duskull is planned as a Trick Room support using techniques such as Pain Split, Disable, Will-O-Wisp, Curse, and Poltergeist. 23 |
| Held Items | Items that enhance a Pokémon or enable special effects. | Eviolite raises the defenses of a Pokémon capable of evolving; Wise Glasses increase special-move power. 23 98 |
| Individual Values | A measure of natural potential that may limit long-term growth. | The Beedrill leader stagnated at 15 Individual Values, while Vespiquen raised her Combee child's values to 22. 450 |
| Trainer support | A Trainer's commands, energy, and communication can directly affect battle performance. | Roy uses Mind Communication to relay Beedrill's movements to Flutter Mane during battle. 290 |
Type Matchups
Type interactions can decide battles even when there is a large difference in raw strength.
- Levitate grants immunity to Ground-type moves. 7 143
- Flutter Mane's Ghost/Fairy typing makes it immune to Normal-, Fighting-, and Dragon-type attacks; retaining Levitate grants a fourth immunity to Ground-type attacks. 143 247
- Dragon-type attacks such as Dragon Pulse, Dragon Claw, and Dragon Tail fail to damage Flutter Mane. 197 198
- Misty Terrain prevents grounded Pokémon from receiving status conditions and halves Dragon-type damage for five turns. 231
Evolution and Form Changes
Pokémon can evolve through conventional means, special items, Trainer energy, or unique bonds. These transformations may alter their appearance, typing, moves, abilities, and battle capabilities. 143 144 368
Flutter Mane Form
Misdreavus possesses an unusual transformation into Flutter Mane. Her initial transformations were unstable and appeared to involve a separate, hostile personality; after Roy rescued her from the Spirit World's Dusknoir, Flutter Mane ceased attacking him and accepted him as her Trainer. 38 63 67
- Activation — Misdreavus uses Booster Energy and Roy's Ghost Power to transform. 143
- Typing — The form gains the Fairy type while retaining Ghost typing. 144
- Ability — Despite being associated with Booster Energy, this Flutter Mane retains Levitate rather than Protosynthesis. 143
- Stat focus — Booster Energy can enhance Speed, Special Attack, or Special Defense; Misdreavus can choose among the corresponding energies. 144
- Duration — Early in its development, the form lasts approximately ten minutes before reverting because Misdreavus lacks sufficient energy to sustain it. 144
- Public identity — Roy presents the transformation as a “Bond Evolution” to conceal its nature as a Paradox species. 144 251
Mega Evolution and Dynamax
- Mega Evolution requires a Pokémon's energy as well as the Trainer's energy; exhaustion can prevent repeated use in the same battle. 248 250
- Dynamax is enabled through Dynamax Bands charged with Dynamax Factor from Wishing Stars. In Galar, it allows Pokémon such as Charizard to grow enormously and gain new abilities. 368
- A Dynamax Band used outside Galar must be recharged in Galar after a single use unless another source of Dynamax Factor is available. 404
Documented Pokémon Behavior
- Litwick hides within Roy's body and reacts strongly to the scent of his Ghost Power. 2 6
- Duskull prefers cool, dark places where it can lie still and sleep; it favors a defensive support role over direct combat. 2 23
- Misdreavus is polite enough not to enter Roy's home without permission, despite being drawn to his scent. 39
- Primeape learned Drain Punch after watching a Fighting-type tournament video, demonstrating that Pokémon can learn from observation. 67
- Dragapult repeatedly challenges Flutter Mane to speed races despite consistently losing. 372
- Marshadow can communicate in human language, manipulate shadows, and travel through them. 339 343
