Background / History
Ace is the biological son of Pirate King Gol D. Roger. As an infant, he was brought by Garp to Dadan’s mountain bandit home. Garp intended to raise him into a Marine, but Ace instead went to sea and became a pirate 132 139.
During childhood, Ace, Sabo, and Luffy exchanged three cups of brotherhood wine. Ace was the eldest, Sabo the second brother, and Luffy the youngest. After Sabo disappeared, uncertainty over his fate became one of Ace’s deepest regrets 355 357.
Ace eventually became Whitebeard’s Second Division commander and regarded Whitebeard as his father. Teach served in his division before murdering Thatch and stealing the Dark-Dark Fruit. Feeling personally responsible, Ace pursued him despite Whitebeard’s warnings 34 122.
Appearance
- Hair: Short and black during his arrival at the Origin Island battlefield 66.
- Hat: A wide-brimmed cowboy hat initially bearing Whitebeard Pirates emblems; later described as orange, with two white fluffy balls hanging from its brim 33 95.
- Clothing: Introduced bare-chested, with a black coat draped over his shoulders 33.
- Accessories: A red-bead necklace and a short dagger at his waist 33.
- Expression: Frequently wears a broad, sunny smile; his anger toward Teach produces an icy stare and bloodshot eyes 34 66 359.
Personality
Ace is straightforward, sociable, and deeply loyal. Whitebeard considers him someone who values loyalty above his own life, while Marco and the other commanders trust his judgment of people despite calling him simple-minded. He readily befriends the outwardly aloof Uchiha and later draws them into a celebration with the Straw Hats 96 97 420.
His devotion can become dangerously single-minded. While fighting Teach, he disregards the surrounding conflict and attacks with an apparent willingness to die alongside his enemy. Even after recognizing a likely trap on Banaro Island, he refuses to abandon his pursuit 69 121 123.
Ace carries shame over Roger’s bloodline, asking Natsu whether being born with “sinful blood” makes him contemptible. His recklessness also gives way to guilt when others suffer for him: at Marineford, he wishes he had died on Banaro Island rather than caused the war, and later apologizes to the Uchiha for involving them in Luffy’s troubles 86 148 415.
Outside combat, he can be remarkably absent-minded. His attempt to repair a ruined boat with loose planks leaves the Uchiha questioning whether he can navigate safely. With his brothers, however, he is attentive and protective, offering Luffy emergency help and remembering intimate details of Sabo’s childhood 84 101 357.
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
- Flame generation: Produces small fingertip flames or enormous torrents of fire capable of engulfing a battlefield 34 66 122.
- Flame transformation and movement: Turns his body into a flaming meteor to charge opponents or travel rapidly 66 102.
- Area control: Uses meteor-like flame barrages and layered fire curtains to block escape routes and restrict enemy movement 69 379 380.
- Defensive applications: Creates walls of fire against sword slashes, destroys incoming debris, and vaporizes approaching seawater 380 381 384.
- Limit against darkness: Teach’s Dark-Dark Fruit repeatedly absorbs his flames and suppresses his attacks, although stray flames still burn Teach 66 81 123.
- Water vulnerability: His Devil Fruit makes drowning a serious concern. The Second Golden Lion’s enormous seawater lion overwhelms his and Sabo’s depleted defenses 84 388.
Fire Fist
- Launches a concentrated, fist-driven blast of fire with heat described as sufficient to melt steel 69 81.
- Uses repeated Fire Fists to bombard Teach’s ship and engulf Banaro Island in flames 81 122.
- Can injure Teach even when darkness absorbs most of the attack 66 81.
Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor
- Forms a massive fireball more than one hundred meters wide 124.
- Uses it as his final attack against Teach after a prolonged battle; its collision with Black Hole devastates Banaro Island 124.
- Later deploys it against the Second Golden Lion’s attack, breaking apart enormous airborne terrain and creating an opening for Sabo 382.
Haki and Geppo
- Acknowledges knowing Haki but calls his proficiency “only so-so,” explaining that he generally relies on his flames 85.
- Recommends Whitebeard rather than himself when Natsu seeks instruction in Haki 85.
- Uses Geppo while pursuing Blackbeard across the sea 81.
Endurance and Cooperative Combat
- Fights Teach for a full day and night despite worsening exhaustion, bleeding, and muscle damage 123.
- Is identified as a Yonko Commander-level fighter during the battle against the Second Golden Lion 385.
- Coordinates ranged flame attacks with Sabo’s close-range Dragon Claw Fist, covering his brother’s advance and restricting their opponent’s movement 379 380.
- Continues resisting the Second Golden Lion for two days and nights, but remains outmatched by the opponent’s Admiral-Emperor-level strength and greater stamina 385 386.
