Background and History

Captivity and Transformation

Tony was a famous billionaire playboy and weapons-design genius before weapons made by Stark Industries were used against him in the Gobi Desert. Shrapnel near his heart forced him to rely on a crude battery-powered device, while his captors imprisoned him to manufacture weapons. 34

During captivity, Tony befriended Yinsen, who helped him construct the Mark I armor and challenged Tony to stop wasting his life. Leon located the cave and rescued Tony and Yinsen, exposing Tony to magic and beginning a wary but lasting friendship between them. 34 36

After returning home, Tony closed Stark Industries' weapons divisions. He refused to commercialize his miniaturized arc-reactor technology because he believed it could cause catastrophic harm in the wrong hands. 38

Becoming Iron Man
