Background / History

Hulk first appeared when an experiment on Bruce Banner went wrong. He tore through the laboratory, resisted its security guards' guns, and injured Betty Ross with a swipe of his hand. Seeing Betty bleeding stopped his rampage, and he reverted to Banner. General Ross subsequently pursued Banner, hoping to reproduce Hulk's power 124.

Banner initially treated Hulk as the source of his ruined life and tried to keep him suppressed. After Leon defeated Hulk and spoke with Banner, Banner acknowledged his responsibility for creating him and decided to try communicating with him instead 130 132 133.

Appearance

Hulk is a massive, heavily muscled green figure, approximately 2.28 metres tall. His build makes him appear much larger than his height alone suggests 129.

• Green skin and oversized hands — visible during Banner's first transformation 124.
• Exceptional bulk — described during a later leap as weighing over a thousand pounds 256.
• Flax-coloured pants — remain intact when he reverts to Banner 257.

Personality

Hulk reacts directly to provocation: if struck, he strikes back, and repeated attacks make him angrier. He can be reckless and destructive, but he generally avoids contact with humans when left to choose his own path 129 256.

He and Banner have distinct perspectives, though they depend on the same body. Hulk protects Banner from lethal danger; Banner, in turn, must live with the consequences of Hulk's actions 128 256 257.

Abilities & Skills

Strength and durability

• Tears tanks apart, survives RPG hits, and resists ordinary gunfire 124.
• Stops a giant Chitauri creature with a punch, despite being driven backward by the impact 210.
• Breaks the mechanical arms of Tony Stark's first-generation Hulkbuster armor; a standard armor's repulsor blast cannot penetrate his skin 343.
• Has high physical and magical resistance. Leon describes him as growing stronger as his anger rises 206.

Transformation and recovery

• Banner transforms into Hulk under intense distress or danger; after Hulk calms down or is beaten unconscious, the body can revert to Banner 124 128 130 257.
• Hulk appeared when Banner tried to shoot himself, spitting out the bullet 128.
• His endurance is considerable, but not limitless: after the prolonged fight with Hela, he reverted to Banner, who immediately collapsed 512.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

• Serpent's hammer — placed Hulk under Serpent's power and transformed him into Nul, Breaker of Worlds. In that state, he fought Thor and later Leon 230 251 252.
• Improvised weapons — has used objects at hand, including a stone pillar, vehicles, and aircraft 256 364 442.

Relationships

• Bruce Banner — shares Hulk's body and initially resents him; after Leon's advice, Banner decides to attempt communication rather than suppression 132 133 256.
• Betty Ross — her injury halted Hulk's first rampage. A later taunt about her enraged him during his fight with Abomination 124 128.
• Leon — repeatedly defeats Hulk, often using a mind-affecting technique to interrupt his anger. Hulk later recognizes Leon and avoids fighting him 130 206 255 365.
• Emil Blonsky / Abomination — challenges Hulk to prove his own strength. Hulk defeats him after Blonsky's taunt about Betty 125 128.
• Tony Stark — builds and pilots Hulkbuster armor to contain Hulk's rampage while trying to move their fight away from civilians 343.
• Thor — fights Hulk while he is under Serpent's influence; later fights alongside him against Hela 230 509 512.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Abomination's rampage — Banner returns to stop the Gamma-transformed Blonsky. Hulk overcomes Abomination after initially taking the worse of their fight; Leon then defeats Hulk and takes Banner away 128 130 131.
• Battle for New York — Hulk stops a giant Chitauri creature and fights under Captain America's direction 210 211.
• Serpent's attack — transformed into Nul, Breaker of Worlds, Hulk battles Thor and Leon. After returning to himself, he flees Leon and crashes into Dracula's castle 230 251 255 256 257.
• Ultron crisis — Hulk rampages through a city and defeats Tony's first-generation Hulkbuster. Leon intervenes and subdues him 342 343.
• Battle with Hela — Banner transforms to join Thor's team. Hulk and Captain Marvel continue attacking Hela before Leon's sealing plan ends the fight; Hulk then reverts to an exhausted Banner 509 512.
