Background / History

Sasuke is one of the two surviving Uchiha after the clan massacre. He directs most of his hatred toward his older brother, Uchiha Itachi, and initially resents Shunichi for possessing Mangekyō Sharingan power that Sasuke lacks 5 7.

During his Academy years, Sasuke trains obsessively, dissatisfied even when his strength improves because he compares himself to Itachi, Shunichi, and older shinobi. Shunichi repeatedly urges him to rest, build a foundation, and avoid pursuing strength faster than his body can endure 9 13 72.

He becomes increasingly reliant on Shunichi's guidance and assistance, including acquiring supplies for Shunichi's work and accepting his training methods without fully understanding them 5 8. Shunichi also has Sasuke teach Naruto, establishing the beginning of Sasuke and Naruto's rivalry and cooperation 10 11.

After learning that Danzō had preserved Uchiha ninjutsu scrolls and Sharingan following the massacre, Sasuke chooses not to publicize the secret. He states that the clan is gone and does not want such events repeated 50.

Sasuke is intensely competitive, impatient, and driven by the need to become strong enough to confront Itachi. His encounters with Naruto, Gaara, Orochimaru, Itachi, and Shunichi make him acutely aware of his own limits, intensifying his frustration with gradual progress 72.

His desire for power makes him vulnerable to Orochimaru's influence, particularly through the Cursed Seal, but he retains enough judgment to recognize Kabuto's offer as an exchange for his body 56 76. He refuses Obito's recruitment despite learning of Obito's role in the massacre 174 248.

Following the revelations surrounding Itachi, Sasuke's motivations begin to change. He comes to believe that strength should prevent future tragedies and grant him the freedom to shape his own path, rather than serving revenge alone 175 199.
