Background / History
Orochimaru studied the Sharingan through his cooperation with Danzō and possessed eyes obtained from the night of the Uchiha massacre. His interest extended beyond transplanted eyes: he wanted a body with exceptional innate talent 100 270.
A defeat by Uchiha Itachi intensified his desire for the Sharingan. Itachi overcame him with a single genjutsu, leaving a lasting impression that later made him cautious around Shunichi’s Mangekyō Sharingan 23 61 214.
His biological research also included Wood Release experiments. Yamato, formerly known as Tenzō, is identified as their only surviving subject 165.
Appearance
Orochimaru is described as pale-faced and sinister-looking, despite frequently speaking in a gentle manner. A later encounter shows him with an androgynous face and casual home attire 23 91 260.
- Long tongue — Frequently flicks it out or uses it to lick his lips; Shunichi considers the gesture unusually recognizable 27 28.
- Variable voice — Speaks gently in several encounters, but has a somewhat hoarse voice at the hot spring inn 23 91 260.
- Serpentine manifestations — Emerges from human-shaped bodies as a white-scaled serpent or White Phosphorus Snake during body transfers 140 270.
- Uncertain true form — Explicitly tells Shunichi that the White Phosphorus Snake is not his true body 374.
Personality
Orochimaru’s curiosity centers on immortality, extraordinary bodies, and the mechanisms behind unusual powers. Shunichi’s knowledge repeatedly fascinates him because it reaches secrets known to very few people. He also responds warmly to the possibility of finding someone who understands his research 23 30.
He treats human life as experimental material. When challenged about the deaths involved in his cloning work, he criticizes Shunichi’s view of life as outdated. Once cloning succeeds, even Shin—previously a treasured specimen—becomes less important to him 138 215.
His alliances are transactional rather than loyal. He cooperates with Isshiki for funding, specimens, and knowledge while passing intelligence to Shunichi. He regards betrayal as a question of whether the reward is sufficient, not a moral boundary 374 384 428.
Although vengeful and willing to use threats, he knows when to negotiate. He accepts severe concessions to recover his hands and backs down when Shunichi’s retaliation becomes too dangerous. Kabuto’s departure and the collision of memories from two timelines nevertheless reveal moments of genuine surprise and vulnerability 34 100 139 260 433.
Abilities & Skills
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A body-transfer technique that allows Orochimaru to occupy replacement vessels and inherit their talents. He later reveals that its origins lie in Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s ruins 374 375.
- Transfers into a clone after recovering his sealed hands 140.
- Uses a White Phosphorus Snake to enter Hiruko during the Chimera ritual 270.
- Occupies Toneri’s original body while relocating Toneri into a clone 404.
- Does not restore the hands sealed by the Dead Demon Consuming Seal on its own 91.
- Remains imperfect: despite replacement bodies, Orochimaru can still be killed 374.
- Shunichi recalls a three-year interval between uses, but Orochimaru does not directly confirm that restriction during their exchange 140.
Cursed Seals and Survival Backups
Orochimaru grants Cursed Seals that increase their bearers’ power while also providing him with a means of survival 23 28 76.
- Places seals on Shunichi and Sasuke; Shunichi immediately seals his own mark away 23 28.
- Gives the Sound Four specially modified seals 76.
- Seal power responds to Sasuke’s extreme negative emotions; the second stage carries greater bodily erosion and psychological costs 76.
- Emerges through a giant snake from Sasuke’s seal after Shunichi applies the Evil Sealing Method 76.
- Shunichi suspects additional hidden backups, but does not know their full number 49.
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
Snakes serve as Orochimaru’s weapons, shields, messengers, and means of movement.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands — Uses his signature technique to pressure Shunichi during their Forest of Death battle 27.
- Giant snake summons — Interposes a summoned snake against Shunichi’s slash, preventing the attack from reaching him even though the snake is cut apart 27.
- Venomous snakes — Uses them during the hot spring confrontation 91.
- Little White Snake messengers — Exchanges notes and coded intelligence through them 8 384.
- Reverse Summoning — Arrives and departs through summoned creatures 214 215.

His relationship with Ryūchi Cave is described as poor, but he continues using its summoned beasts 370.
Defensive Body Techniques
Orochimaru combines body modification and replacement techniques to survive attacks that would kill ordinary ninja.
- Orochimaru Substitution Style and Soft Physique Modification are credited with protecting him from many fatal attacks 88.
- Survives Shunichi’s Black Rasengan through substitution after the attack pierces half his body 91.
- Shares Super-Speed Body Regeneration with Shunichi during their later cooperation 374.
Forbidden Ninjutsu
Orochimaru possesses several techniques valuable enough to become bargaining assets.
- Impure World Reincarnation — A major threat even after his hands are restored; he hands over the technique during the Valley of the End negotiations 139 214.
- Eight Branches Technique — Listed among the forbidden techniques contributing to his combat strength 88.
- Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique — Included among the techniques surrendered to Shunichi 139.
- Reaper Death Seal Release — Uses the Death God Mask to retrieve his sealed soul fragment, then escapes the dying vessel 139 140.
Despite his research into natural energy, Orochimaru has failed to master Ryūchi Cave’s Senjutsu 322.
Biological Research and Cloning
Orochimaru’s introductory manuscripts solve several problems in Shunichi’s early research. His later projects encompass cloned organs, artificial eyes, replacement bodies, and Ōtsutsuki biology 11 134 384 405.
- Kekkei Genkai transplantation — Studies Shin’s ability to accommodate any Kekkei Genkai 215.
- Human and body-part cloning — Develops technology commissioned by Shunichi 100 134.
- Ocular cloning and fusion — Produces defective Mangekyō-like eyes and later imperfect Tenseigan 214 384 404.
- Chimera research — Identifies a major flaw in Hiruko’s technique and offers to improve its success rate 260.
- Ōtsutsuki vessel construction — Creates a temporary body stronger than Isshiki’s existing vessel, while citing enormous chakra requirements and missing biological fragments as obstacles to a complete replacement 384.
- Large-scale cloning — By his later research stage, could create a clone army if he wished, although understanding chakra interests him more than territorial conquest 405.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Uses it against the Black Rasengan; the attack knocks it away. Later produces black and white Kusanagi swords as payment to Shunichi 91 139.
- Research scrolls and experimental records — Holds records covering cloning, Cursed Seals, Sage Mode, and natural energy 11 138 139.
- Ryūchi Cave contract scroll — Surrenders it during negotiations to regain his hands 139.
- Special-material storage scrolls — Can contain replacement bodies despite their compact size 139.
- Death God Mask — Temporarily uses Shunichi’s mask to recover his hands; Shunichi retrieves it afterward 140.
- Tailed Beast specimens — Stores part of the Three-Tails’ shell alongside the Eight-Tails’ broken horn 215.
- Advanced Wood Release records — Receives them from Isshiki in exchange for a replacement body 384.
- God Tree branch — Receives it from Isshiki for further vessel development 403.
- Hidden laboratories — Maintains facilities across the world, some still operational after the timeline changes 434.
Relationships
- Uchiha Shunichi — Research beneficiary, coveted vessel, opponent, and eventual collaborator. Their cooperation depends on exchanges of knowledge and resources rather than complete trust 11 23 100 374 433.
- Yakushi Kabuto — Initially a partner rather than simply a subordinate; later acts as laboratory assistant and physical support while Orochimaru’s hands are disabled. Orochimaru subsequently reports that Kabuto has gone rogue 30 139 215 260.
- Karin — Experimental subject and loosely defined disciple whose Uzumaki abilities he develops. She eventually chooses Shunichi over him 34 100 214.
- Uchiha Sasuke / Second Pillar — Cursed Seal recipient and intended future vessel. Shunichi warns Sasuke that Orochimaru plans to let him develop for roughly two more years before taking his body 28 49.
- Uchiha Itachi — Defeats Orochimaru through genjutsu, contributing to both his Sharingan obsession and his caution around Mangekyō users 23 214.
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher who seals Orochimaru’s hands. Orochimaru later compares Kabuto’s betrayal to his own relationship with Hiruzen 100 260.
- Danzō — Research collaborator connected to Orochimaru’s Sharingan experiments and Kabuto’s assignment 30 270.
- Yamato / Tenzō — Sole surviving subject of his Wood Release experiments; remains hostile toward him 140 165.
- Shin — Prized specimen able to accommodate any Kekkei Genkai. His value declines after successful cloning, and Kabuto reports rebellious behavior 215.
- Hiruko — Former friend and Chimera research partner. Orochimaru exploits the ritual by entering Hiruko’s body before fusion finishes 260 270.
- Ōtsutsuki Isshiki — Resource provider and vessel-research partner. Orochimaru refuses to treat their arrangement as genuine subordination 374 384.
- Ōtsutsuki Toneri — Captive blood donor whose body Orochimaru occupies; later agrees to assist his research in hopes of recovering it 384 404.
- Little White Snake — Messenger that carries his correspondence, sometimes complaining about Orochimaru stuffing objects into its mouth 8 384.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Contact and Recruitment
Shunichi first contacts Orochimaru through a white snake while seeking ways to strengthen his body. Orochimaru responds through Kabuto with books, research notes, and experimental materials that accelerate Shunichi’s work 8 11.
At their first meeting, Orochimaru questions Shunichi about resurrection techniques and covets his body and eyes. He places a Cursed Seal on him and invites him to leave Konoha, but Shunichi suppresses the mark and refuses 23.
Chūnin Exams and Konoha Crush
During the Forest of Death assessment, Orochimaru overwhelms Shunichi despite the latter opening the Fifth Gate. Shunichi subsequently gains leverage by exposing his knowledge of the seal’s soul backup, prompting Orochimaru to withdraw. Sasuke is left unconscious with a Cursed Seal, while Naruto’s access to Nine-Tails chakra is sealed 27 28.
Their next negotiation concerns immortality. Shunichi requests Hashirama cells and tissue from a body capable of accepting transplanted Bloodline Limits, arguing that natural energy offers a better direction than Orochimaru’s existing Cursed Seal research 30.
Orochimaru later sends Karin to take Shunichi away, but de-escalates after Shunichi threatens serious retaliation. The Konoha Crush Plan ultimately leaves Orochimaru’s hands sealed by Hiruzen; Orochimaru himself characterizes the attack as a whim rather than a committed attempt to destroy the village 34 100.
Cloning Bargain and Restoration
Orochimaru repeatedly pressures Shunichi for the method of undoing the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. Shunichi initially withholds it, and their hot spring confrontation ends with Orochimaru surviving the Black Rasengan 61 76 91.
Shunichi then offers research, a one-tomoe Sharingan, and eventual seal removal in return for cloning technology and an end to their hostilities. Once Orochimaru produces results, Konoha authorizes a controlled transaction 100 134 137.
At the Valley of the End, Shunichi forces additional concessions, including techniques, swords, research records, and a promise not to harm Konoha ninja. Orochimaru recovers his hands inside the Four Violet Flames Formation and transfers into a clone body 139 140.
Artificial Eyes and Changing Alliances
Orochimaru trades cloned Sharingan research for White Zetsu. Soon afterward, Akatsuki approaches him through Kabuto despite his previous betrayal, and he shows interest in renewed cooperation 214 215.
He later reports Kabuto’s departure and works with Hiruko to improve the Chimera Technique. Shunichi supplies natural energy to the ritual in exchange for access to the Eight-Tails’ horn. As Hiruko’s fusion nears completion, Orochimaru enters his body with a White Phosphorus Snake 260 268 270.
Kara and Ōtsutsuki Research
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru and Isshiki approach Shunichi with an alliance proposal. Orochimaru subsequently agrees to investigate Ōtsutsuki biology for Shunichi while continuing to obtain resources from Kara 327 374 375.
His experiments use Toneri’s blood, transplanted eyes, and eventually Toneri’s original body. Isshiki supplies advanced Wood Release records and a God Tree branch, enabling further vessel research. Orochimaru produces imperfect Tenseigan, artificial Mangekyō Sharingan, and a crude Chakra Fruit-like product 384 403 404 405.
Altered Memories and Continued Cooperation
A later ritual associated with Kara’s awakening project fails, causing internal complaints. Orochimaru considers leaving but remains for the time being 428.
After Naruto brings him and Toneri to Shunichi, Orochimaru struggles to reconcile memories from two timelines. He confirms that their cooperation agreement remains valid and reveals Kara’s goal of awakening Isshiki, although he cannot guarantee that its contact method works 433.
Shunichi has him escorted out of Konoha rather than allowing such an unpredictable researcher to remain. Orochimaru accepts the arrangement and plans to study his unfamiliar memories using his surviving laboratories 434.
