Barry works as a forensic technician while operating as Central City's speedster. When he first encounters Zhang Tianran at S.T.A.R. Labs, he already possesses super-speed but has not yet identified the lightning within him as the Speed Force. He voluntarily provides blood and cell samples for research, unaware of how valuable his connection to the Speed Force is to other speedsters 3 7.

Zhang becomes Barry's earliest technical mentor on Speed Force use.
