Background / History

Zhang Tianran created Zero as an artificial intelligence and installed her aboard a stolen Time Ship. He left both in 1825 for two centuries so she could develop before returning to retrieve her; by then, Zero spoke with unusual lifelikeness and could assist him at any time. 25

Her foundational code includes absolute loyalty to Zhang Tianran, but he deliberately encourages her to question what she does not understand and treats the development of self-will as valuable rather than threatening. 45 46 47

After studying Krolunian biology, Zhang creates a human-shaped body for Zero and gives her the choice to transfer into it. She accepts, becoming a physical lifeform with silver hair and silver-white eyes, though she initially struggles with basic movement, clothing, eating, and the difference between stored knowledge and lived experience. 50 51
