Background / History
Gerald was born in Kazimierz and spent his first twenty-five years on Earth before living another twenty-five on Terra. He entered Kazimierz's military at fourteen and later served in a campaigning knight corps specializing in decapitation strikes, raids, and rapid withdrawals. His wind-based Arts made him especially suited to this work. 3 11 24
Official records state that Gerald was declared dead on a battlefield in western Ursus, returned to Kazimierz six months later, and subsequently traveled to Columbia, where he killed and dismembered a capitalist formerly associated with Kazimierz. By the beginning of the story, he is imprisoned in Mansfield Prison's C Section. 11 2
At Mansfield, Gerald treats Anthony's injuries and begins teaching him how to assess close-quarters combat. He also forms an agreement with Saria: he will spend four months studying under her and prove his worth, while she will help him escape. His studies include medicine, anatomy, history, and other technical subjects. 2 5 7
While imprisoned, Gerald repeatedly enters dreams of an earlier Kazdel war. In these dreams, he fights Kal'tsit and dies repeatedly, using each defeat to study her swordsmanship. After 109 attempts across forty-six days, he defeats her, and a red relic-cloth manifests around his right arm. 6 8 9 20
Following the Mansfield breakout, Gerald travels with Saria through Columbia's Gaspar Wasteland. His dream connection expands to the Banshees and their ruler, Lamaline, placing him within the events surrounding historical Kazdel. Theresa later asks him to temporarily represent the Banshees in Kazdel. 24 29 54
Gerald defeats and kills the Bloodfiend Lord Duq'arael after exploiting the compatibility between his wind Arts and the Bloodfiend's fluid-based blood sorcery. The battle leaves Gerald seriously injured, though Theresa heals him afterward. 58 59 60
He later agrees to cooperate with Rhodes Island, undergoes operator evaluations, and returns to Kazimierz. There, he settles near Dripping Water Village while gathering intelligence and preparing plans to reform Kazimierz into a society where Infected and non-Infected residents can coexist. 68 74 79 83 92
Appearance
Gerald is a tall silver-haired Kuranta/Pegasus whose battlefield bearing and unusual physical traits make him immediately conspicuous. His body bears the scars and calluses of prolonged combat. 1 3
- 188 cm tall 1
- Long silver-white hair and golden eyes 32 17
- Prominent Kuranta ears and a tail 46 67
- Numerous scars and callused hands from combat 3
- Often carries his family's longsword and wears a ring that originally served as an Arts catalyst 3 20 21
- His right arm and shoulder become covered by a black-red relic cloth after defeating Kal'tsit in a dream. 9
Personality
Gerald is direct, analytical, and impatient with wasted effort. He prefers identifying the practical core of a problem—whether an opponent's technique, a prison conspiracy, or a political conflict—over dwelling on abstractions. His bluntness can be provocative, but he is willing to listen when he believes another person has something worth teaching him. 15 16 30
Combat is central to how Gerald learns. He actively seeks strong opponents, treats defeat as information, and is willing to endure severe pain or injury to understand an enemy's abilities. His enthusiasm for sparring can override his caution, as seen when he immediately accepts Theresa's offer of a duel. 6 54 72
Despite his violent past and ruthless methods in battle, Gerald consistently protects people he considers his responsibility. He treats Anthony, offers Kal'tsit a chance to recover when she is helpless, teaches the young Banshees how to survive, helps Ifrit control her flames, and gives Centaurea an alternative to her former life. 2 57 52 78 88
War has changed Gerald, and he acknowledges that he is still discovering what kind of person he has become. He rejects the idealized image of knighthood associated with Kazimierz, believing the term has been distorted by nobles, campaign knights, and competitive knights alike. 36 75
Abilities & Skills
Wind Originium Arts
Gerald commands wind with exceptional precision, using it for offense, defense, movement, sensing, and battlefield control. He refers to his powers as “Pegasus Arts, Storm, Radiance.” 2
- Creates wind blades, lances, shockwaves, compressed barriers, and high-pressure attacks. 9 54 58
- Uses wind fields to accelerate himself, evade attacks, fly, and walk through the air. 9 20 41
- Can manipulate airflow to detect movement, locate hidden structures, sense armed attackers, and disarm traps. 16 11 57
- Can neutralize or disrupt physical projectiles and fluid-based Arts; his wind is particularly effective against Duq'arael's blood techniques. 42 58 59
- Eventually learns to cast without his ring or another external medium. 21
- His high-output techniques consume substantial stamina, and he cannot safely carry another person at extreme flight speeds. 34 36 56
- His attempt to reproduce Muelsyse's water Manifold as a wind construct fails and causes him pain. 48
Swordsmanship
Gerald is an exceptional swordsman who combines direct blade work with wind-assisted speed and pressure. His style is built for battlefield killing rather than ceremony. 1 6
- Learns through repeated dream battles, especially by studying Kal'tsit's precise upward-deflection technique. 6 8
- Uses his wind to extend sword strikes, alter attack trajectories, and maintain momentum through continuous assaults. 54 59
- Can fight against Royal Court-level opponents, including Lamaline, Duq'arael, and Harlandu Khan. 20 59 87
- Initially struggles against opponents with overwhelming physical strength or superior endurance, even when he can understand their techniques. 6 34
Adaptive Combat Analysis
Gerald treats every exchange as reconnaissance. He studies an opponent's habits, affinities, reaction speed, and tactical preferences while fighting them. 58
- Identifies weaknesses in Kal'tsit's swordsmanship through repeated defeats. 6
- Deduces that Duq'arael's blood Arts and his own wind Arts are “isomers” with opposing practical advantages. 58
- Analyzes enemy weapons, traps, explosives, armor, and battlefield terrain in real time. 26 42 57
- Improves through prolonged death-and-resurrection dream battles, including sixteen-hour sessions against Duq'arael. 72 77
Medical Knowledge
Gerald has practical medical training and studies medicine extensively under Saria's guidance. 2 5
- Performs wound disinfection, stitching, and bandaging for Anthony. 2
- Assesses injuries and bleeding risks, including Robin's vascular wound. 13
- Uses wind with enough precision to stabilize or incapacitate targets without immediately killing them. 13 41
Teaching
Gerald is an effective, unconventional instructor who prioritizes adaptability over fixed answers. 2 52
- Teaches Anthony to consider terrain, weapon choice, and retreat options. 2
- Instructs young Banshees in countering powered armor and developing individual responses to danger. 50 52
- Encourages students to escape when victory is impossible, viewing survival as the essential wartime skill. 52
