Background

Maria is a Hunter from another world who awakens in Terra with missing memories and a geometric entity attached to her body. Although she is already no longer human, she initially distrusts the entity—Little Regret—and tears it away from herself before learning that it can assist her. After discovering that Outer Gods, rather than Great Beasts, are responsible for Terra’s disasters, she resolves to collect Umbilical Cords and kill them. 1 2

During Little Regret’s first journey into a fragment of the past, Maria encounters and protects a feral Puppy girl later known as Ceobe. She feeds her, teaches her language, observes her unusual weapon-enchanting talent, and eventually urges her to find a home before they part. Maria collapses from the strain of slaying the forest’s Great Beast only after ensuring the girl has left safely. 3 10 17

Maria’s actions across different eras have left extensive historical traces that she herself often cannot remember. Patriot recognizes her as the Master of the Banshee Court and possesses a Key given to him by Maria’s future self, while later records identify her as a general, a saint, and a figure central to Kazdel’s history. 130 425 573

Appearance

Maria is a tall, slender woman whose composed bearing remains striking even in hostile surroundings. She commonly wears elegant black Hunter clothing and keeps her white hair tied in a simple ponytail. 30 44

  • Fair complexion and delicate facial features. 44
  • Silky white hair, usually tied high or in a simple ponytail. 44 402
  • Gray eyes likened to moonlight. 2 44
  • Prefers practical black attire, later wearing black armor inlaid with silver-white threads. 44 402
  • Carries herself with an upright, statue-like posture. 613

Personality

Maria is calm, restrained, and intensely practical. She speaks directly, rarely wastes words, and evaluates unfamiliar people and systems with suspicion rather than trust. Her confidence stems from a precise understanding of her own strength, not a need for others’ approval. 20 311 332

Despite her detached demeanor, Maria is deeply protective. She repeatedly intervenes for vulnerable people, including Ceobe, Misha, Tessi, and civilians caught in violence. Her protectiveness can become overbearing; the Doctor observes that Maria treats nearly everyone around her as fragile compared with herself. 3 59 513 518

Maria is merciless toward active threats but not needlessly cruel. She can seek harsh interrogation methods, yet accepts limits imposed by Ch’en; she defeats Crownslayer without serious injury and tends to her wounds afterward. 38 124 She is also uncomfortable with unfamiliar intimacy and emotions, becoming noticeably shy when Lamaline is forceful with her. 338 445
