Background / History

Zuo Jian was originally a human who was shot through the heart and abdomen, dying shortly afterward. He reincarnated in Terra as a parasite-like being and initially entered Laurentina's body, where he first appeared to her in a mental space as a skeletal figure. 1 2

While Laurentina was imprisoned by the Church of the Deep, Zuo Jian absorbed injected Originium to protect her from its effects. He used her flesh and blood to make clothing, revealing that he had previously worked as an artist for a gacha game and specialized in visually striking costume designs. 6

The experiments on children and Abyssal Hunters shaped his hostility toward the Church of the Deep. When Laurentina could not bring herself to end the suffering of the mutilated children, Zuo Jian formed scythe-like blades from her clothing and killed them himself, insisting that she should not have to bear that act alone. 10

After the destruction of the Church's experimental site, Zuo Jian found the consciousnesses of victims absorbed into his body. He released the victims he could no longer save, but retained Quintus and Lai Ke as punishment for their involvement in the experiments. 28

He later became increasingly involved in the lives of Saltwind City's survivors, producing food, farming tools, and a clone-priest to help the village endure. He also kept a promise to paint Anita's portrait before leaving with Laurentina to search for other Hunters. 40 48 51

In Victoria and Columbia, Zuo Jian adopted increasingly ruthless methods. He absorbed gang members' memories and consciousnesses, turned their bodies into remote extensions of himself, and began planning to influence gangs, Londinium, and eventually Victoria's future. 116 118 119

During the conflict surrounding the Collective Souls and Theresa's resurrected body, Zuo Jian was forcibly drawn into a consciousness space and temporarily occupied Theresa's body. He fought Kuisatushta and the Confessors, then resisted the Collective Souls' demand that he kill Theresa in order to escape. 177 179 180 182

Personality

Zuo Jian is analytical, adaptable, and unusually conscious of the moral weight of killing. He is capable of extreme violence, but distinguishes between indiscriminate slaughter and what he considers necessary punishment or protection. He ended the suffering of experimental victims himself so Laurentina would not have to, but deliberately kept Quintus and Lai Ke trapped within his body. 10 28

His empathy is most apparent around vulnerable people. He comforts Anita, supports Saltwind City's residents, worries about Laurentina's mental dependence on him, and protects Theresa during their journey through Kazdel. 37 48 51 198
