Background

Born into the Zenin Clan, Maki was treated as worthless because she could not use Cursed Energy and needed glasses to see Cursed Spirits. Her father, Ogi Zenin, repeatedly called Maki and her twin sister Mai useless, blaming them for the clan's Ten Shadows Technique passing outside the family. Maki left the clan and entered Jujutsu High to prove her own worth. 25 58

Her original ambition was to become an outstanding sorcerer and return to reform the Zenin Clan from within. The clan's interference with her Grade 2 promotion assessment, however, reinforced her understanding that its members and allied higher-ups would obstruct anyone like her from advancing. 25 31

Xia Jie later identified that her Reverse Heavenly Restriction was incomplete due to a minute remnant of Cursed Energy. By having Soul-Eating Worm remove it, he allowed Maki to become the Second Heavenly Tyrant without requiring Mai's death. 125 126

After reuniting with Mai, Maki abandoned her plan to become Zenin Clan head. She instead resolved to leave the clan and take Mai with her, recognizing that the position would offer her neither freedom nor meaningful change. 151 297 314

Maki initially wears Tokyo Jujutsu High's black uniform and glasses. After her Heavenly Restriction fully awakens, she no longer needs glasses to perceive Cursed Spirits. 22 313

Personality

Maki is intensely driven and refuses to accept helplessness. She hates seeing people claim they can do nothing while making no effort, though she would still help someone in that position after berating them. Failure does not discourage her; it strengthens her resolve to improve. 31 99

She is blunt, competitive, and willing to provoke allies into training harder. Her early sparring with Xia Jie began partly from resentment over his effortless recognition, but their repeated battles became mutual training: Maki improved against high-grade Cursed Spirits while helping Xia Jie develop his physical and weapon skills. 15 25

Despite her hostility toward the Zenin Clan, Maki remains deeply protective of Mai. Her decision to remove Mai from the clan ultimately outweighs her former desire to seize control of it. 151 314 317

Shadow Maru Incident

Maki joined Okkotsu against Shadow Maru, impaling the curse with her spear and coordinating with Okkotsu without verbal communication. Shadow Maru eventually swallowed her using Shadow Concealment, but released her on Xia Jie's order. 8 9

Training and Grade 2 Assessment

Maki repeatedly sparred with Xia Jie, using his Shadow Mode as a substitute for fighting high-grade Cursed Spirits. Xia Jie secured Iizuna Noriyuki's recommendation for her Grade 2 assessment, but Zenin Clan-linked assessors sabotaged the evaluation after her glasses were broken. 15 24 31

Awakening as the Second Heavenly Tyrant

After learning her Heavenly Restriction was incomplete, Maki agreed to Xia Jie's plan to remove her residual Cursed Energy. Soul-Eating Worm completed the process, vastly enhancing her body and senses. 125 126

Nine-Tailed Fox Conflict

Maki independently confronted Litao and her spirit puppets, evading multiple Cursed Techniques and defeating Miyanodera Makoto. She pressured Litao enough that the puppeteer feared being crushed if Maki reached her. 140 144

Sister School Goodwill Event

Maki used stealth and overwhelming speed against Kyoto students, incapacitating Kasumi Miwa and attacking Asahisa Mirai. She fought Mai and Noritoshi Kamo, openly declared herself a Heavenly Restriction type, and announced her intention to sever ties with the Zenin Clan. 294 295 297 298

Departure from the Zenin Clan

Maki returned to the Zenin Clan to retrieve Mai. She broke Naoya's wrist, rejected Naobito's attempts to keep her in the family, defeated Ogi in the Black Room, and rescued Mai. When the Kukuru Unit and several clan sorcerers pursued them, Maki decisively overwhelmed them while Mai supported her by stabbing Chojuro Zenin. 313 314 317 318

Transparent World

While attempting to aid Okkotsu, Maki was intercepted by Miyano Yuki. Yuki's Mirror Eyes replicated Maki's movements, forcing Maki to surpass her current limits by entering the Transparent World and defeating Yuki's final draw slash. 389
