Game of Thrones-A Title Was Never My Desire
Inside the tent, Jon found it hilarious to watch Sola pour tea so quietly and cautiously, barely daring to breathe.
Davos and his group were also quite serious and formal; they came directly to their door carrying Stannis's warrant.
Jon knew that how much he could earn in cash for his role in conquering and defending King's Landing for Stannis depended on his subsequent statements and actions.
Therefore, there was no room for neglect, especially since Melisandre, the Red Priestess, was sitting right across from him. Jon silently prayed that she wouldn't notice anything amiss.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Davos broke the silence. "Although I've never met Lord Eddard Eddard, I've heard others describe him. Jon, you really do resemble him."
Davos smiled and tried to lighten the mood, saying, "In the aristocratic circles of Westeros, praising someone as resembling their father is usually a compliment, especially for a bastard like Jon."
"No, Lord Eddard's character is a level I can never reach in my lifetime." Jon knew that Davos was Stannis's most loyal and upright advisor. He not only always thought of Stannis's best interests and carried out his will, but also told him the right direction and offered his own advice.
Even if Stannis doesn't like it, or even if it might anger Stannis.
In the end Stannis bestowed upon him considerable favor, even appointing Davos, a subject from the Flea Bottom, as his Hand of the King.
According to the original storyline, Stannis should soon be going to the Wall to support the Night's Watch, as suggested by him.
This speaks volumes about his standing in Stannis's eyes. Moreover, Davos is a decent man, and Jon is willing to befriend him.
Penny, standing to the side, had a different opinion, believing that Jon's immense achievements were "inseparable from luck."
If it weren't for the deaths of so many of them, which depleted the Lannister army, especially Tyrion's Wildfire, Jon would never have been able to conquer King's Landing. That's why he crossed his arms and adopted a distant and hostile posture ever since he entered the tent.
"I didn't realize Lord Jon was so modest. If you ask me, as long as you don't have any bastards, you've already surpassed your father morally," Penny said with a forced smile, and the atmosphere in the tent cooled down almost visibly.
Jon's carefully maintained politeness quickly vanished, and Davos tried to stop him, but it was too late.
Jon stood up abruptly and slapped Penny across the face with lightning speed, but Penny was still dazed after being knocked to the ground.
"You bastard, how dare you hit me!" Penny, realizing what was happening, was about to draw his sword, but Jon stood his ground and said, "My father died fighting for the rights of the rightful king. If you dare say another word against him, I'll kill you right here!" Jon's voice was icy, and all of Penny's curses caught in his throat. Davos, seeing the situation was turning against him, quickly tried to calm him down.
Sola stood there in astonishment, not daring to move an inch.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Melisandre didn't lift a finger.
Penny, his cheeks swelling rapidly, left the tent cursing; in his mind, the two had a grudge.
He already knew that Jon opposed Robb Stark becoming king and had secretly launched a coup to seize military power.
This means that from now on he can only follow Stannis.
I have plenty of ways to get back at him!
Seeing Penny leave, Davos repeatedly apologized to Jon, Jon also admitted that he had been a little agitated. Both of them treated it as a minor incident and didn't take it to heart.
Davos continued to inquire about his experiences on the way there, expressing his admiration for Jon's actions, before raising his own question, "Jon, I noticed that we didn't see many North soldiers on the road. Why is that?"
What Davos really wanted to know was whether someone had leaked the news to Jon that they were coming to King's Landing today; if so, he would have to be careful.
"Most of the soldiers I brought from the North and the Riverlands are relatively inexperienced, especially after the recent wars, and they are under a lot of pressure. If they were allowed to move freely in King's King's Landing, it would definitely put pressure on security. So I stationed them at the Old Gate in the north. Of course, I improved their food rations, and they have meat almost every meal, as a way of appeasing them and rewarding them. As for rewards for their military achievements, they are still being tallied. I think His Majesty Stannis will not forget those who have contributed."
Seeing Jon's reaction, Davos nodded in satisfaction again. When Tywin led his army to conquer King's Landing, he had looted extensively. The difference between the two was obvious.
Jon then added, "Actually, I was quite disappointed when I saw King's Landing. It stinks here, and I don't really like going to the city."
Seeing that he brought it up in a joking tone, Davos laughed and repeatedly expressed his agreement.
When Jon expressed his contempt for brothels, Davos was even more surprised, knowing that Stannis had also proposed closing brothels, which was met with opposition from everyone.
If Stannis were told about this, Stannis would likely develop feelings of goodwill towards Jon beyond his military achievements.
Davos thought to himself, without even realizing that Jon had simply made a mass grave for his four sons, and that's why he started thinking about Jon.
However, there is still a very crucial question: why exactly does Jon support Stannis? Could it be the will of Winterfell in the North?
Although he already knew that Jon was unlikely to oppose Robb becoming king, he still needed to find out for peace of mind.
He genuinely wanted to work with Jon in the future and wanted to keep this talent with Stannis, so he couldn't be careless about the details.
When asked why he opposed Robb's ascension to the throne and instead supported Stannis, Jon replied, "Sir, when I don't know what to do, I think about what Lord Eddard would do in this situation. He and King Robert are like brothers, and he certainly wouldn't want the country to be divided. That's why I opposed Robb's ascension. He died fighting for the rights of the rightful king, and I think he would support King Robert's younger brother. So I supported His Majesty Stannis. In fact, I don't know His Majesty Stannis very well, but I've heard that he's a king who values justice very much. I think only a king like that can bring this chaotic country back on track!"
Davos saw that Jon's words were sincere and without a trace of falsehood. In particular, his statement that he did not know Stannis and was only following Eddard's orders seemed very genuine.
Through Eddard Stark, he concluded that Stannis should be "a good king, though not at all obsequious or comfortable, but sincere enough," and from then on, Davos had no more doubts.
He not only didn't hate Jon, but was even somewhat pleased, because his loyalty to Stannis stemmed from Stannis's impartiality.
"Very well, Jon, I will tell His Stannis our entire conversation. Is there anything else you would like to say to His Majesty?"
"You can tell me," Davos said kindly, resting his hand on his knee.
Jon was about the same age as his son, which made him feel even more affection for the younger generation.
He was determined to secure a better fief and a higher title for Jon, but Jon's next words left him speechless.
"Sir Davos, I personally have nothing to say to His Majesty Stannis. If I had to say something, I would like His Majesty Stannis to come to King's King's Landing as soon as possible and take the Iron Throne to rule the country."
A few days ago I received a letter from the Wall pleading for help. I think you know that I am just a deserter from the Wall, who went south on my own to avenge my father, Eddard. Now that the blood feud is over, I should return to the Wall. I hope His Majesty Stannis can provide more support to the Wall.
