Background / History

Uchiha Massacre and Team 7

Sasuke was one of only two known Uchiha survivors after the clan massacre. He was found unconscious without fatal external injuries, but had suffered extreme psychological trauma. After learning that Itachi had annihilated the clan, he vowed to kill his older brother. He and Chiya Uchiha—another survivor—agreed to regard one another as their only remaining family. 2 3

He trained alongside Chiya before graduating from the Ninja Academy. Both were assigned to Kakashi Hatake's four-person Team 7 alongside Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno. Sasuke remained distant from his teammates, openly declaring that he intended to restore the Uchiha Clan and kill Itachi. 4 6 7

During the Land of Waves mission, he fought beside Chiya against Root operatives disguised as Hidden Mist rogues. The two later established a code phrase to identify impersonators, which exposed Orochimaru's disguise during the Chūnin Exams. 10 25

Orochimaru's Mark and Defection

Orochimaru targeted Sasuke for his Sharingan and branded him with the Cursed Seal of Heaven in the Forest of Death. The seal's influence became apparent when Sasuke awoke after Chiya, Naruto, and Sakura were injured; black markings spread across his body as he sought retaliation against the Sound ninja. 25 27

After Itachi returned to Konoha and subjected him to another Sharingan-induced reliving of the massacre, Sasuke concluded that his current strength was inadequate. The Sound Four offered him a path to greater power under Orochimaru, and he left Konoha despite Sakura's attempt to stop him. 42 53

Ryūchi Cave and Orochimaru's Defeat

At Orochimaru's base, Sasuke mastered Chidori Stream and Chidori Sharp Spear, then accepted the risk of training at Ryūchi Cave. The cave's natural energy gradually consumed the Cursed Seal while allowing Sasuke to develop a Sage Mode with enhanced senses and near all-directional perception. 104 129

After completing the White Snake Sage's trial, Sasuke returned to Orochimaru's base because Orochimaru possessed intelligence on Itachi. Orochimaru attempted to take Sasuke's body through the Reincarnation Ritual, but Sasuke turned the technique against him, destroyed Orochimaru's chakra-space, and absorbed his chakra. 134 137 146

Learning the Truth

In Orochimaru's records, Sasuke found proof that Danzō had ordered Root to target Chiya, collaborated with Orochimaru, transplanted Sharingan taken from Uchiha corpses, and prepared to exploit the massacre for those eyes. 147 148

Further documents and recordings revealed that Danzō had threatened Sasuke's life to force Itachi to stop the Uchiha coup. Sasuke initially rejected the implication that Itachi had acted to protect him, but the corroborating records forced him to reconsider his brother's motives. 148 149

After Itachi's death, Sasuke reflected on the revelation that Itachi accepted Konoha's orders on the condition that Sasuke be spared. He awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and resolved to judge Konoha's guilt himself. 154 159

Taka and the Konoha Infiltration

Sasuke freed Suigetsu, Karin, and Jūgo from Orochimaru's former facilities and named their group Taka. With assistance from a masked man, Taka infiltrated Konoha to retrieve Root evidence and expose Danzō's crimes. 174

During the operation, Sasuke fought through Konoha's defenses with Sharingan, Mangekyō techniques, Susanoo, Sage Mode, and Lightning Release. He destroyed Hokage Rock with Kirin after displaying Danzō's image on it, then publicly revealed Danzō's role in Chiya's framing, the Uchiha Massacre, and Root's abuses. 176 177

Sasuke ultimately declared that the existing system would create more figures like Danzō. He proposed destroying the current order and personally holding absolute power to prevent its corruption from recurring. 178 219

Sasuke is reserved, blunt, and intensely focused on his goals. In Team 7, he spoke little beyond his determination to restore the Uchiha and kill Itachi. His pursuit of strength repeatedly outweighed his ties to Konoha, including when he accepted Orochimaru's offer despite understanding that Orochimaru wanted his body. 7 55
