Background / History
Chiya was present on the night of the Uchiha clan massacre and entered a mental space where he encountered Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. Kaguya explained that she had been hunted, struck by an unknown technique, and awakened within Chiya's body as a weakened remnant form. Chiya, aware of future threats facing the shinobi world, resolved to gain strength as quickly as possible. 1 3 12
While still associated with Konoha and Team 7, Chiya trained his Sharingan, copied material from the Scroll of Seals, and fought alongside Sasuke during the Land of Waves mission. Root later attempted to capture him; Kaguya's chakra healed him during the attack, allowing him to defeat the operatives with Majestic Destroyer Flame. 5 11 12 14
After Danzo became Fifth Hokage, Chiya was declared a wanted criminal. He left Konoha, trained under Tsunade's guidance, learned the Yin Seal and Sage Mode, and began relying less exclusively on his Sharingan. 45 48
Appearance
Chiya is a black-haired Uchiha whose scarlet Sharingan is his most recognizable feature. His appearance changes dramatically when he draws on Kaguya's chakra or assumes a masked identity. 66 107
- Usually carries Futsu no Mitama at his waist. 75
- Wore a conical hat while concealing his identity in Kirigakure. 62
- Used a white mask and black robe while driving Konoha shinobi from a Sand Village outpost. 107
- Wears an Akatsuki cloak and mask after joining the organization. 169
- Sage Mode creates azure markings beneath and around his eyes. 62
- His left palm bears a diamond-shaped chakra mark, later referred to as a Pseudo-Karma. 72 169
- Kaguya transformation gives him white hair, horns, a loose white robe, and Kaguya's facial features. 101
Personality
Early on, Chiya is observant, pragmatic, and playful. He teases Kaguya despite her cold demeanor, jokes with Sasuke, and responds to danger with quick improvisation rather than panic. He is also notably protective of people endangered in front of him, intervening for Mei Terumi's forces, Shion, and civilians despite initially claiming he does not want involvement. 12 20 62 75 76
His bond with Kaguya becomes the central influence on his decisions. Chiya repeatedly pushes himself past exhaustion to protect or restore her, and her departure hardens his resolve to gather every source of power available. 72 125 159 167
By the time he begins collecting Tailed Beasts openly, Chiya has become colder and more uncompromising. He considers the impending Ōtsutsuki threat more urgent than his relationships with Mei Terumi, Gaara, Temari, or Naruto, though he remains troubled by the personal cost of those choices. 162 182 192 195
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Chiya uses the Sharingan for perception, prediction, copying information, and combat analysis. His Mangekyō grants destructive space-time techniques and access to Susanoo.
- Copied and transcribed techniques from the Scroll of Seals through visual memory. 5
- Can read attacks that his body is still too slow to evade, a recurring weakness against opponents such as Haku and Might Guy. 14 108
- Broke Shikamaru's Shadow Imitation Technique through overwhelming chakra output. 107
- Heavenly Dominion contracts and crushes a target's surrounding space. 145
- High Plain of Heaven freezes time and space; its range expands when strengthened by the Pseudo-Karma. 95 194
- Repeated ocular-technique use causes extreme chakra depletion, eye pain, and bleeding. 48 145
Susanoo
Chiya's black-red Susanoo serves as both a defense and a large-scale combat weapon.
- Its partial skeletal form blocked Orochimaru's Kusanagi Sword. 47
- Withstood the Raikage's Lightning Release at the Five Kage Summit. 183
- Can armor a Sage Art Wood Human, greatly increasing its durability. 188
- Later manifests as a colossal Perfect Susanoo against the Allied Shinobi Forces. 214
Sage Mode and Sage Arts
Tsunade directed Chiya toward Shikkotsu Forest because he needed an alternative to repeatedly exhausting his eyes. In Sage Mode, he gains sensory awareness and access to powerful large-scale techniques. 48 62
- Senses nearby movements, chakra, and attacks before they reach him. 108
- Sage Art: Wind Release: Wild-Draw Flash channels wind chakra through Futsu no Mitama in a devastating draw-slash. 69
- Sage Art: Wild God's Great Rock Seat summons a controllable Stone Man capable of blocking a Tailed Beast Bomb. 71
- Sage Art: Fire Release: Calamity Fire Cascade can be intensified into white flame with Kaguya's chakra. 94
- Sage Art: Wood Release: Wood Human Technique creates enormous wooden humanoids. 188
- Requires natural energy and chakra reserves; Kaguya can help him gather natural energy internally. 70
Flying Thunder God Technique
Kaguya teaches Chiya the Flying Thunder God after studying its scroll. He practices formula placement and repeated teleportation in a rocky valley until he can travel reliably between marked locations. 43 87 88
- Teleports instantly to placed formulas, including formulas on kunai, terrain, and opponents' clothing. 88 109
- Allows escape from spatial capture attempts and lethal attacks. 93 183
- Requires prepared formulas or marked targets.
- Repeated use rapidly drains chakra and mental energy. 88
- Can be countered when opponents destroy or anticipate his landing points. 144
Kaguya's Chakra and Pseudo-Karma
Kaguya's remnant chakra heals, empowers, and sometimes directly controls Chiya's body. Her absorption of Three-Tails chakra created the diamond-shaped palm mark that later became Chiya's remaining connection to her. 12 71 72 169
- White chakra healed his wounds after the Root attack. 12
- Kaguya can take control of his body in emergencies, including suppressing the Three-Tails and firing a chakra cannon from his left hand. 71 95
- The palm mark absorbs chakra more efficiently and was used to seize portions of Three-Tails and One-Tail chakra. 72 96
- The mark enables Kaguya-like transformation and later powers Kaguya Chakra Mode. 101 193
- Kaguya's weakened state limits the power she can manifest, as shown by her incomplete Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack. 123
Elemental Ninjutsu and Meteor Release
Chiya is proficient in Fire and Earth Release and develops Meteor Release by attempting to fuse the two chakra natures.
- Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Fire Technique and Great Fireball Technique were among his early combat techniques. 10 11
- Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame defeated Root operatives and was later absorbed by Pain's Preta Path. 12 144
- Meteor Release: Lava Bullet was his first successful Meteor Release technique. 20
- Meteor Release: Lava Swamp was used during the Forest of Death conflict. 26
- Can employ Earth, Fire, and Lightning Release against Tailed Beasts. 71
Wood Release and Tailed Beast Suppression
Chiya possesses Hashirama Cells fused into his body, enabling Wood Release and supporting the later implantation of the Rinnegan. 207 208
- Wood vines restrained numerous summit guards simultaneously. 182
- Wood Release: Wood Dragon Jutsu becomes available when his Kaguya-powered mark enhances Susanoo. 183
- Used Wood Release to trap Naruto's Nine-Tails chakra constructs. 193
- Kakuan Entering Society with Bliss-Bringing Hands suppressed Naruto's Nine-Tails chakra and rendered him unconscious. 194
Rinnegan
Chiya implants a Rinnegan into his right palm, overcoming its resistance and preventing his Hashirama Cells from growing out of control. 208
- Kaguya provides chakra support through the Pseudo-Karma during the implantation. 208
- The procedure severely injures him and destroys much of the medical room. 208
- He sought the Rinnegan because the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path is controlled through it. 162
