Background

Naruto grew up isolated in Konoha, where villagers avoided him and treated him as though he might become a monster. Before learning the truth of his birth, he believed he had to cause trouble—including defacing Hokage Rock—just to make people acknowledge that he existed. His ambition to become Hokage began as a desire for recognition and the power to protect others. 7 157

He initially failed the Ninja Academy graduation exam and sat alone after his classmates left. Mizuki exploited his desperation by deceiving him into stealing the Scroll of Seals, but Naruto learned the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique and defeated Mizuki after Iruka defended and recognized him.
