The insect army was terrifying—everyone could see that—but at this point, even pointing at Nick Fury and cursing him out would do no good.
No matter how much Black Widow grumbled inwardly, she still had to complete the mission. She could not say she had been scared off by caterpillars. She could not afford that embarrassment.
She first asked Daisy, "Are there any side paths around the perimeter, or perhaps secret passages? There should be some kind of route for their own people to come and go through, right?"
Daisy studied the tablet. "I don't see any entry or exit routes. Visitors use the helipad on the roof. Their own people use a kind of pheromone."
The three female agents all felt sick looking at the giant insects. A toad landing on your foot might not bite you, but it sure disgusted you!
Fighting was one thing. Once gunfire erupted, the enemy would definitely be put on guard, which would be extremely unfavorable for the rescue mission.
"Prepare for battle. We'll split into two groups. One group will lure away the guards, while the other rushes in to find the doctor." Hill had always earned perfect marks in tactics. She could always offer the most appropriate advice at the most appropriate time. Black Widow had no better plan and nodded in agreement.
They kept yesterday's grouping. Daisy had the high-caliber weapon, so the task of luring and eliminating the enemy could only fall to her. As the one who had proposed the plan, Hill stayed behind to help share the pressure. Black Widow, the strongest fighter, and Sharon, who had some medical ability, would go in to rescue the hostage.
To guard against the giant spider's venom, Black Widow Romanoff gave each of them a bottle of antidote. It had been specially developed by S.H.I.E.L.D. It might not cure every poison, but it could save a life. After telling each other to be careful, they moved into their designated positions and waited to attack.
It would have been best if they could act silently, but faced with insects large enough to be called enormous, they had no good options. They could only force their way through.
Hill set several traps, then gave Daisy a signal from afar.
Bang! The Rhino Revolver showed its power, but the target was too far away, and luck was not on her side.
The carefully prepared shot missed the giant spider, instead grazing its compound eye and flying past.
Daisy fired again. This shot was blocked by the wasp that had rushed over at high speed after hearing the sound. The bullet broke one of its limbs, slowing it by twenty percent.
"Damn it!" Neither shot had produced results, which annoyed her greatly. She had only brought twelve .357 Magnum rounds, mostly for looking cool. She had not expected to encounter a battle on this level.
As their bodies grew larger, the insects seemed to have gained some intelligence as well. They realized Daisy was a threat. The giant wasp, giant centipede, and giant spider were all alarmed. Even the caterpillar, which looked sluggish, was drawn in.
The giant bugs charged toward her at the same time.
Without a word, Daisy turned and ran.
The centipede was the fastest pursuer. Its countless limbs scuttled rapidly across the ground, its bright red shell looking extremely sturdy. Trees along its path were knocked over in all directions, while the grass it passed over looked as though it had been drenched in sulfuric acid, hissing with wisps of smoke.
Daisy suddenly took a running leap and jumped over a pile of grass.
The foolish centipede did not know there was a trap. It plunged straight in with a thud. Time had been tight, so they had not made the trap very elaborate—just a shallow pit with two high-explosive grenades buried inside.
With a thunderous boom, the giant centipede was hit in both the head and abdomen. Black muscle flew everywhere like rain, mixed with shell fragments and severed limbs.
The thing had extraordinary vitality. Even after such grievous wounds, it still retained some ability to move. Hill leaped out and fired several shots into the centipede's head at close range, finally killing the monster.
Meanwhile, Daisy was constantly in danger. In the open valley, no matter how fast she was, she could not outrun the wasp. It could fly!
After running over two hundred meters, she heard the fluttering of wings drawing closer and closer. She quickly rolled to the left, narrowly dodging the stinger coming from behind.
"Bastard!" She stopped hiding her ability, gathered all her power, and raised a hand to fire a shockwave directly at the wasp's abdomen.
They were extremely close. The air was violently compressed, and the faintly white, dim beam looked as if it had shattered a mirror made of air, creating a slight sense of visual distortion through the refracted light.
The white beam was not very fast, but it compressed the air around it, causing the wasp's escape speed to lag slightly.
Its rapidly beating wings slowed by several beats. That brief delay sealed its fate.
The invisible shockwave was like a massive hammer, smashing directly into the wasp's belly. The tremendous impact pulverized its already defenseless abdomen. Thick fluid trickled all over the ground, while the stinger, once a deadly weapon, now dangled beneath the wasp's body on a strand that looked like an intestine.
Grievously wounded, the wasp plunged headfirst to the ground. Daisy did not have time to finish it off, because the most dangerous spider had come for her.
She activated her power at full force through her left arm, and pain flared through it. Without even looking, she fired a shot behind her with the gun in her right hand.
The giant spider reacted incredibly quickly. Almost the instant Daisy turned, all eight of its legs pushed off the ground, launching it into the air.
The brown-black giant spider pounced at her. Daisy pushed her dynamic vision to its limits, gripped the gun with both hands, calmly aimed at its abdomen, and fired twice. Then, when only a meter separated them, she forcefully pushed off with her feet and leaped to the side.
The giant spider had its own hunting techniques. Almost the instant it was hit, it spat a large, sticky, incredibly tough web toward her.
Daisy was in midair and had no way to dodge. She could only throw away the gun, clench her right hand into a fist, and punch the air.
With a crack, like the sound of shattering glass, the air broke apart. It began from a single point at the center, then cracks spread outward until a small section of the air before her eyes had been shattered.
Without air to support it, the web was also shaken into powder by that crisp sound.
The blow was astonishingly powerful, even shattering two of the spider's limbs on its left side.
Having lost its balance and taken shots to the abdomen, the giant spider's belly had been pierced through by the high-caliber .357 Magnum rounds, which exited through its back. Thick blood sprayed in all directions like rain. After landing, the spider barely crawled two steps before finally losing all ability to move.
"That really hurts..." Daisy sat on the ground, rubbing her arm as she complained inwardly.
Both attacks had seemed like full-force strikes, but the strain they placed on her body was completely different.
The shockwave was relatively gentle and relied mainly on penetration. That final strike, which shattered the air, looked impressive, but it was all brute force with little technique behind it.
Without an exceptionally strong body, the resonance alone had left her struggling to endure it. She should use moves meant for showing off like that less in the future!
Daisy massaged her muscles to ease the discomfort in her arm. Only after a minute did she pick up the Rhino Revolver and give the giant spider, which was still struggling on the ground, another shot.
She reloaded and ran toward Hill.
