History
Creation and early vulnerability
Nuwa created the Human Race after the establishment of the Demon Race Heavenly Court and the Witch Race. Though humans possessed Innate Dao Bodies, their initial weakness left them despised by the myriad races and unable to defend themselves effectively 1.
Their natural lifespan averaged only a few hundred years, making many established Primordial cultivation methods poorly suited to them. Laozi later addressed this limitation by personally teaching the Golden Core Dao among human tribes 56.
Integration with the Witch Race
Human tribes frequently merged with smaller Witch Race tribes. The Witches protected their human allies from demonic harassment, while humans developed tools and other practical crafts under this protection 29.
The two races also produced Human-Witch Hybrids. Children who displayed the ability to wield one of the twelve laws were counted as Witches; those without law-related traits were Human Race members, although they possessed unusually strong bodies 29. After the Witch-Demon Calamity, surviving orthodox Witches withdrew to the Nine Netherworld, while the hybrids remained in the Primordial Land and continued living among humans 84.
Demon Race massacre
The Demon Race began a large-scale slaughter of humans to obtain souls for the Witch-Slaying Sword. The campaign produced immense resentment across the Primordial World and became part of the greater Witch-Demon Calamity 69 73.
The Human Ancestral Court resisted under the Three Ancestors:
- Ziyi used a hide garment empowered by Merit to raise frontline human cultivators to the Earth Immortal realm. 70
- Youchao used a thatched hut to grant defenders protective light against demonic attacks. 70
- Suiren wielded Fire-Drill Wood to burn a route through the Demon Race encirclement without harming humans. 70
Lu Xuan evacuated retreating humans into the Thirty-Six Heavens evolved from the Heaven-Earth Sea-Calming Ruler, while Interception Sect disciples and human cultivators fought the Demon Race 70.
Places of refuge
| Location | Protection and residents |
|---|---|
| Shouyang Mountain | Laozi, as leader of the Human Religion, offered the Human Race direct protection and settlement at the mountain's foot. 71 |
| Longevity Mountain | Zhen Yuanzi deployed the Mountain-Sea Formation to protect hundreds of millions of humans from the Demon Race. 76 77 |
| Phoenix Perching Mountain | Fuxi sheltered humans there despite being the Demon Race's Xi Emperor; he opposed the slaughter and had fallen out with Nuwa over humanity. 69 71 |
| Witch Race tribes | Human tribes became Witch Race vassals, farming and forging tools in exchange for shelter. 72 |
| Yaochi | The Queen Mother of the West accepted 3,000 human women and promised to teach them cultivation. 73 |
Lu Xuan's plan was not to remove every human from danger: protected survivors would preserve the race's inheritance, while those tempered by the slaughter would become future tribal leaders and defenders 79.
Severance from Nuwa
After the Witch-Demon Calamity, Youchao, Ziyi, and Suiren publicly questioned Nuwa's failure to protect the race she created. Acting on behalf of humanity, they declared that the Human Race and Nuwa's karmic obligations had canceled each other out and severed their ties before the Heavenly Dao 85.
The Heavenly Dao accepted the oath and returned Nuwa's share of Human Race Karmic Fortune to humanity. The Three Ancestors subsequently recognized Lu Xuan as the Human Race's Sacred Sovereign and presented him with a pearl recovered from the Weak Water 85.
Rise of the Human Race
Following the Witch-Demon Calamity, the Human Race inherited the Karmic Fortune of the declining Witch and Demon Races and became the next protagonists of the Primordial World 68. The Heavenly Dao decreed that three sovereigns and five emperors would guide humanity's ascent 91.
Human tribes gradually formed larger settlements. Agriculture, weaving, smelting, medicine, and other skills advanced rapidly under the guidance of cultivators from multiple teachings 93.
- Fuxi was elected common ruler as Chen City, humanity's first capital, neared completion. After abdicating to Shennong, he became the Human Race's Heavenly Sovereign and entered Fire Cloud Cave to suppress its Karmic Fortune. 101 102
- Shennong promoted agriculture and led human development; under his governance, harvests increased, disease declined, and trade between tribes strengthened. 104
- Lieshan earned recognition through tasting and recording the properties of countless herbs, seeking medicine for his people. Shennong selected him as his successor for his merit, knowledge, and concern for humanity. 105
- Xuanyuan united the Human Race after defeating Chi You, integrated the Jiu Li Tribe as equals, established markets, and introduced currency practices. 112 113
- Yu led the Human Race in controlling floods and later became the last of the Five Emperors. 115 130
After Yu's era, Qi seized the position of co-ruler and founded the Xia Dynasty, initiating hereditary rule. The Xia was later replaced by the Shang Dynasty 132.
Society and Cultivation
Cultivation
The Golden Core Dao gave humans a cultivation route tailored to their limited lifespan. Advancement extends a human's lifespan, and reaching the Refining Emptiness into Dao realm forges the mortal body into an Immortal Body 56 57.
During the battle at the Human Ancestral Court, most human cultivators were between Refining Emptiness into Dao and Earth Immortal. Ordinary Demon Race members began at the Earth Immortal realm, leaving humans at a severe disadvantage without formation support, Merit artifacts, or allied cultivators 70.
Civil development
- Human tribes developed farming, weaving, smelting, medicine, and pottery. 93 104
- Shennong's agricultural reforms ended dependence on hunting and gathering for food. 104
- Cangjie sought to create a human writing system because knot-records could no longer preserve information or history reliably. 110
- Xuanyuan established markets, first using shells and later copper coins to address unequal values in barter. 113
Karmic Fortune and Faith
The Human Race's collective Karmic Fortune is central to the Primordial World's future. Human sovereigns can draw upon it to attain extraordinary cultivation; Fuxi used Human Race Karmic Fortune, the Kongtong Seal, and Merit to break through to the first rank of the Primordial Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal realm 102.
Human gratitude can also produce Faith Power. When Zhen Yuanzi protected Longevity Mountain, the humans swore to worship him for generations; the Heavenly Dao accepted the vow, and Faith Power began nourishing his Merit Golden Cloud 77. Laozi likewise accumulated Faith Power through personally teaching the Golden Core Dao among human tribes 77.
The Human Path has not yet awakened, but Fire Cloud Cave is protected by it. Should humanity endure its final trial, the Human Path will awaken and join the Heavenly and Earthly Daos in governing the Primordial World 103 131.
