Background

In his youth, Chen Xin encountered an unidentified white-robed swordsman who used only a tree branch to break his Seven Killing Sword. The encounter convinced him that the sword path was far broader than he had understood. He later came to believe that even Tang Chen, Bo Saixi, and Qian Daoliu might be unable to defeat that senior swordsman. 3

For thirty years, Chen Xin guarded an ancient sword left in the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s Sword Pavilion. He revered it as “Senior Sword,” contemplated the sword intent lingering within it, and kept others from approaching it. 9 17 22

The sword’s owner was revealed to be Qian Daochen. When Qian Daochen arrived to reclaim it, Chen Xin recognized him through the resonance between his Seven Killing Sword and the ancient blade, then formally greeted him as a junior. 22

Chen Xin challenged Qian Daochen after three decades of studying the sword he had guarded. Despite releasing all nine soul rings and using his strongest attack, he was defeated by a single unassisted sword strike. Qian Daochen then gave him a strand of sword intent and instructed him to cultivate the Seven Killing Sword as his own path rather than imitate another’s. 26 27 28

Later, the Heavenly Screen revealed that Chen Xin’s father, Chen Jianjun, had also lost a sword duel—against Qian Daoliu, who used the Heaven-Slaying Sword-Draw Technique taught by Qian Daochen. Chen Xin accepted that his father had not lost unjustly and resolved to continue the path Chen Jianjun had been unable to complete. 60 61
