Background / History

Tang Chen rose to become the strongest Douluo in Clear Sky Sect history. As sect leader, he personally repelled several invading Titled Douluo, then challenged major factions—including Spirit Hall, the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and the Elephant Armor Sect. His victories established Clear Sky Sect as the world’s number one sect. 31 32

In his youth, Tang Chen was both rival and traveling companion to Qian Daoliu. The two fought for an entire day without deciding life or death, gained mutual respect, and later crossed the sea together to challenge Bo Saixi on Sea God Island. Their personal friendship ultimately could not overcome the hostility between Clear Sky Sect and Spirit Hall. 32 33

During their travels, Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu jointly overcame powerful sea soul beasts and explored an underwater ruin. Against its ancient formations, Qian Daoliu located the formation eyes while Tang Chen destroyed them with his hammer. Their cooperation was accompanied by frequent arguments over who should attack first. 33

Tang Chen repeatedly defeated Qian Daoliu in their youthful direct confrontations. Although Qian Daoliu possessed superior speed, flight, and the Seraphim Martial Soul, he repeatedly chose to contest Tang Chen head-on and was overpowered by the Clear Sky Hammer. 53 54

On Sea God Island, Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu jointly challenged Bo Saixi. Bo Saixi drew upon the sea, Sea God Island, and the Seven Sacred Pillars to defeat both Peerless Douluo after a full day of battle. 32 57

At the height of his confidence, Tang Chen challenged Qian Daochen, believing himself to be the continent’s strongest soul master. He detonated all nine soul rings and used the Great Sumeru Hammer, but Qian Daochen split his Clear Sky Hammer with a finger-generated sword strike and defeated him without drawing his sword. 33 34

Tang Chen accepted Qian Daochen’s criticism that his heart was unsettled by rivalry and his feelings for Bo Saixi. He gave up pursuing Bo Saixi and devoted himself to hammer cultivation, eventually earning the title Land Invincible. 34 35 36

Tang Xiao later recalled that Tang Chen had returned to the sect after losing to an unnamed swordsman, sat before the mountain gate for three days, and then entered seclusion for a year. Upon emerging, Tang Chen declared that the strongest person on the Douluo Continent had never been himself. The Heavenly Screen’s review revealed Qian Daochen as the swordsman behind that account. 34

Years later, Tang Chen returned for a second battle with Qian Daochen. Their clash lasted three days, and Tang Chen succeeded in making Qian Daochen draw his ancient sword; however, Qian Daochen defeated him with three strikes and spent the remainder of the encounter explaining Tang Chen’s hammer techniques. Tang Chen left after swearing not to return until he became a god. 36 38

Tang Chen later entered the Asura God Exam, but interference from the Rakshasa God’s will resulted in the Nine-Headed Bat King parasitizing him. His body and soul ceased to be at their peak, and he remained in Slaughter City for decades. 30 37

Tang Chen is commonly depicted in a black robe, carrying the Clear Sky Hammer across his shoulder. During his time in Slaughter City, he sits upon its blood-red throne while resisting the Nine-Headed Bat King’s influence. 31 37

Personality

Tang Chen was originally proud, competitive, and driven to establish himself as the strongest soul master on the continent. His first challenge against Qian Daochen was motivated not only by his pursuit of strength, but also by his desire to surpass Qian Daoliu and prove himself worthy of Bo Saixi. 33 34

His defeat changed him. Rather than resent Qian Daochen, Tang Chen accepted his guidance, abandoned romantic distractions, and devoted himself to understanding why he wielded the hammer. Even after a second loss, he remained determined to reach godhood and face Qian Daochen again. 35 36 38

Tang Chen remains intensely battle-driven after recovering from the Nine-Headed Bat King’s control. He welcomes Qian Daoliu’s growth as motivation for their delayed duel and regards Di Tian as another future opponent rather than a reason to retreat. 58 62 71

Tang Chen repeatedly defeated Qian Daoliu in direct battles during their youth, but their long-delayed rematch has become inevitable following both men’s Heavenly Dao rewards. Supreme Powerhouse Ranking

The Heavenly Dao Ranking places Tang Chen sixth among the continent’s supreme powerhouses. Although many considered him the strongest of the three Peerless Douluo, the ranking accounts for his parasitized, non-peak condition and the divine support available to Qian Daoliu and Bo Saixi. Qian Daoliu and Bo Saixi were subsequently revealed in fourth and fifth place respectively. 29 30 37 43 53

The review also exposes the connection between Tang Chen’s pursuit of godhood and his defeats by Qian Daochen. Tang Xiao and the Clear Sky Sect elders blame Qian Daochen for Tang Chen’s departure, possession, and the sect’s subsequent decline, and vow to demand an explanation after Tang Chen returns. Spirit Hall’s worshippers counter that Tang Chen chose both challenges and his pursuit of godhood himself. Tang Chen’s own reflections establish that he does not resent Qian Daochen. 37 38

Recovery in Slaughter City

The ranking’s golden light restores much of Tang Chen’s consciousness and forces the Nine-Headed Bat King’s will back into the depths of his body. Tang Chen resolves to recover, return to Clear Sky Sect, and reclaim his place in the world. 31 37

Following the distribution and integration of his rewards, Tang Chen’s injuries heal and the Nine-Headed Bat King becomes greatly suppressed. He remains in Slaughter City while continuing to refine the power needed for his return. 40 43 44

The Nine-Headed Bat King attempts to exploit his soul-ring fusion to seize his body again, but the Heavenly Dao’s golden light repels it, and the Incomplete Godhood’s pure divinity subsequently leaves it unable to resist. Tang Chen continues to keep the creature subdued while preparing to leave Slaughter City. 39 43 55 71

Heavenly Dao Rewards

Tang Chen receives a 500,000-year soul ring, the Heaven-Mixing Hammer, and an Incomplete Godhood. While beginning to integrate these rewards, he weighs a return to the Asura Godhood against forging an entirely new divine path. 38 39 40

His rewards also restore his confidence in confronting Qian Daoliu. Tang Chen recognizes that Qian Daoliu’s own fourth-place rewards, including an Incomplete Angel Godhood and divine artifacts, will significantly strengthen his former rival, but regards that growth as a reason to seek a fair fight. 58 62

Tang Chen dismisses Qian Daoliu’s additional Sacred Angel Left Arm Bone as only a minor advantage and intends to wait until his rival has absorbed all four rewards before fighting him. 62

Pursuit of a Third Battle

Tang Chen’s central ambition remains a third battle with Qian Daochen. He does not hold hatred over his past defeats, but seeks one victory in which his Clear Sky Hammer can truly meet Qian Daochen’s sword. 38

His conviction rests on the belief that obtaining genuine God Rank power may finally qualify him to face Qian Daochen again. However, Qian Daochen later continues to describe Tang Chen as unqualified to challenge him when dismissing Tang Hao’s attacks. 38 135

Delayed Duel with Qian Daoliu

Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu agreed to fight again after leaving Sea God Island, with Qian Daoliu intending to use the Heaven-Slaying Sword-Draw Technique against Tang Chen’s Great Sumeru Hammer. Tang Chen instead departed to seek godhood, delaying the contest for decades. After receiving his rewards, Tang Chen resolves to go to Spirit City and settle the unfinished battle. 58

Qian Daoliu likewise expects Tang Chen to fulfill their agreement once he finishes absorbing his rewards. He remembers the sword strike he failed to unleash thirty years earlier and looks forward to learning whether Tang Chen can still withstand his sword. 59

Future Challenge to Di Tian

Di Tian’s God-Level Dragon God’s Claw and Yin-Yang Complementary Soul Core inspire Tang Chen’s fighting spirit. Rather than fearing the Soul Beast King’s power, Tang Chen identifies Di Tian as a future challenge alongside Qian Daochen. 71

Di Tian’s display also broadens Tang Chen’s understanding of the heights attainable before godhood. Although his own rewards have given him confidence in attempting God Rank, he recognizes that Di Tian already possesses a god-level technique without having become a god. Tang Chen nevertheless places returning to the Clear Sky Sect before pursuing this new challenge. 71

Gu Yuena and the Dragon God’s Past

When Gu Yuena is ranked second and assessed as a God King, Tang Chen’s Asura Divine Power directs killing intent toward her. He suppresses it and resolves to ask the Asura God about Gu Yuena after fusing with the Godhood. This remains a future intention rather than confirmation that his ascension or fusion is complete. 84

The Heavenly Screen subsequently reveals the Dragon God’s failed attempt to break beyond God King, the shattering of the Creation Godhood, and the Asura God’s killing blow. Watching these events makes Tang Chen recognize the enormous difference between his own strength and the Dragon God’s. 86
