Background / History

Tang Chen rose to become the strongest Douluo in Clear Sky Sect history. As sect leader, he personally repelled several invading Titled Douluo, then challenged major factions—including Spirit Hall, the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and the Elephant Armor Sect. His victories established Clear Sky Sect as the world’s number one sect. 31 32

In his youth, Tang Chen was both rival and traveling companion to Qian Daoliu. The two fought for an entire day without deciding life or death, gained mutual respect, and later crossed the sea together to challenge Bo Saixi on Sea God Island. Their personal friendship ultimately could not overcome the hostility between Clear Sky Sect and Spirit Hall. 32 33

At the height of his confidence, Tang Chen challenged Qian Daochen, believing himself to be the continent’s strongest soul master. He detonated all nine soul rings and used the Great Sumeru Hammer, but Qian Daochen split his Clear Sky Hammer with a finger-generated sword strike and defeated him without drawing his sword. 33 34

Tang Chen accepted Qian Daochen’s criticism that his heart was unsettled by rivalry and his feelings for Bo Saixi. He gave up pursuing Bo Saixi and devoted himself to hammer cultivation, eventually earning the title Land Invincible. 34 35 36

Years later, Tang Chen returned for a second battle with Qian Daochen. Their clash lasted three days, and Tang Chen succeeded in making Qian Daochen draw his ancient sword; however, Qian Daochen defeated him with three strikes and spent the remainder of the encounter explaining Tang Chen’s hammer techniques. Tang Chen left after swearing not to return until he became a god. 36 38

Tang Chen later entered the Asura God Exam, but interference from the Rakshasa God’s will resulted in the Nine-Headed Bat King parasitizing him. His body and soul ceased to be at their peak, and he remained in Slaughter City for decades. 30 37

Tang Chen is commonly depicted in a black robe, carrying the Clear Sky Hammer across his shoulder. During his time in Slaughter City, he sits upon its blood-red throne while resisting the Nine-Headed Bat King’s influence. 31 37

Personality

Tang Chen was originally proud, competitive, and driven to establish himself as the strongest soul master on the continent. His first challenge against Qian Daochen was motivated not only by his pursuit of strength, but also by his desire to surpass Qian Daoliu and prove himself worthy of Bo Saixi. 33 34

His defeat changed him. Rather than resent Qian Daochen, Tang Chen accepted his guidance, abandoned romantic distractions, and devoted himself to understanding why he wielded the hammer. Even after a second loss, he remained determined to reach godhood and face Qian Daochen again. 35 36 38
