Background
Minato had already earned the name Yellow Flash during the Third Shinobi World War. Shortly after returning from a mission, Hiruzen Sarutobi dispatched him, along with Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin Nohara, to investigate the sudden loss of contact with Bellflower Mountain City. 8
At the city’s crater, Minato received Inoichi Yamanaka’s transmitted memories of the white Energy Blast that annihilated the city. He rejected Orochimaru’s demand for immediate investigation, prioritizing evacuation, survivor safety, and a report to the Third Hokage. He then took command of the surviving Konoha forces, secured Bunpuku’s seal, and prepared for the approaching unknown threat. 9
Minato initially refused to fight Ato because he appeared to be a chakra-less four-year-old. Once Ato attacked the Konoha shinobi and targeted the One-Tail’s jinchūriki, Minato engaged him with Flying Thunder God, Rasengan, summons, and his newly developed techniques, but could not breach Ato’s defenses. Severely wounded, he ultimately transported Ato, Kakashi, and Bunpuku to Konoha after Ato threatened Kakashi’s life. 10 11 12
Kushina restored Minato’s injuries with Nine-Tails chakra. He was subsequently appointed acting Fourth Hokage, then formally assumed the office. As Hokage, he removed Danzō from Root leadership, imprisoned him for attacking Ato without authorization, and integrated Root’s shinobi into the Anbu. 15 22 23 36
Minato personally investigated Ato’s spacecraft and impersonated Ato through Transformation Jutsu to question Kuros. This operation confirmed that Ato was a Saiyan sent from beyond the Ninja World to eliminate native life and sell the planet. 24 25
Appearance
Minato is commonly associated with the white Hokage haori and the “Yellow Flash” image created by his space-time ninjutsu. In later arcs, he wears a Scouter over one eye to monitor combat power. 23 42 101
- His usual sunny demeanor disappears when confronting threats to Konoha or his students. 8 13
- In Nine-Tails Mode, he is surrounded by a golden chakra cloak. 56
- Sage Nine-Tails Mode adds Sage Mode markings around his eyes. 56 57
- During the tournament, Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan is transplanted into Minato’s eye sockets to improve his ability to track Ato. 58
Personality
Minato is compassionate, disciplined, and strongly protective of his comrades. He refuses Orochimaru’s push for reckless investigation at Bellflower Mountain City, instead placing the wounded and the village’s chain of command first. Even after being defeated by Ato, he warns other shinobi not to sacrifice themselves pointlessly. 9 12
His concern for his students is a defining weakness Ato exploits. Minato submits to Ato’s demand to transport him to Konoha only when Kakashi is threatened, then immediately orders Kakashi to report to Hiruzen while Minato remains behind to contain Ato. 12 13
As Hokage, Minato is pragmatic and decisive. He delegates effectively, removes Danzō from power, disbands Root, and later pressures the Uchiha Clan to contribute Sharingan for the Ninja World’s survival. 23 34 50
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God Technique
Minato’s signature space-time ninjutsu allows him to teleport himself, allies, and marked targets with exceptional speed.
- Uses specially marked kunai and direct marks placed on people or targets as teleportation anchors. 9 10 12
- Transported Orochimaru from Bellflower Mountain City back to Konoha and later evacuated hundreds of Konoha shinobi using shadow clones. 9 21
- Marked every Martial Arts Tournament contestant so he could instantly reach them or redirect attacks away from the arena. 54
- Employs Flying Thunder God Barrier to protect the Shinobi Alliance by transferring Kizaru’s light bullets into the sea. 143
- His movement is fast enough to make other Kage wary, though Ato and Obito possess speed or space-time abilities capable of countering him. 32 65
Rasengan and Flash Techniques
Minato uses Rasengan-based attacks alongside high-speed Flying Thunder God combinations.
- His Rasengan fails to injure Ato, who blocks a later attempt with one finger. 10
- Uses Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique to surround Ato with marked kunai. 11
- Activates the self-developed Gale Flash Super Wheel Dance Howl Style Zero, creating hundreds of high-speed afterimages around Ato. 11
- Uses Sage Art: Flash Wave after learning the energy-circuit principles for Energy Wave release through Yamanaka Fu’s transmitted memories. 56 57
Summoning Jutsu
Minato can summon Gamabunta of Mount Myōboku.
- Uses Toad Shop Destruction Technique to drop Gamabunta directly onto Ato. 11
- Gamabunta’s combat power is recorded as 79, but Ato overwhelms and injures him, forcing Minato to dismiss the summon. 11
Nine-Tails and Sage Power
Minato gains major combat increases by receiving Kurama’s chakra and combining it with Sage Mode.
- Kushina transfers the Yin half of Kurama into him through Adamantine Sealing Chains. 56
- Nine-Tails Mode raises his combat power from 69 to 240. 56
- Sage Mode raises his combat power to 310–320, but the stored senjutsu chakra lasts only one minute. 56 57
- Can manifest Kurama’s full form and wield a Lightning Beam Sword while controlling the Armored Nine-Tails. 58
- Following Obito’s seizure of the tailed beasts, Minato retains one half of the Nine-Tails; Kushina retains the other half. 67
- When overwhelmed by Conqueror’s Haki, Minato entrusts control of his body to Kurama. 146
Healing and Survival Techniques
Minato supplements his speed-based fighting style with advanced healing.
- Kushina heals his near-fatal injuries through Yin Healing Wound Destruction using Nine-Tails chakra. 15
- Uses Tsunade’s Creation Rebirth to restore his body after Ato breaks multiple bones during their tournament battle. 57
Intelligence Gathering and Sensory Ninjutsu
Minato combines deception, sensory techniques, and battlefield analysis to respond to threats stronger than himself.
- Receives the Yamanaka Clan’s memory transmission to witness Bellflower Mountain City’s destruction. 9
- Uses Transformation Jutsu to impersonate Ato and extract information from Kuros through Ato’s spacecraft. 25
- Activates Uzumaki Clan sensory ninjutsu to locate Obito at the Valley of the End after learning of Rin’s death. 50
- Uses a Scouter to track numerical combat power, including Ato’s 5,000 reading and the Ten-Tails’ 1,000 reading. 42 103
