Episode 46: Liu Chuanfeng and Sakuragi Hanamichi split apart. One stood cold as ice to his left, the other flamboyant as fire to his right, while the remaining players followed neatly behind them in a strict formation with synchronized steps.
The formation somehow carried the oppressive air of a gang on patrol.
It's Shohoku!
Whoa, that must be Takenori Akagi. He's so tall!
Wow, is that the super rookie Liu Chuanfeng? He's tall too!
Who's that redhead next to him?
Never seen him before. Don't know, but he doesn't look like a good guy.
The Ryonan players murmured among themselves, their gazes constantly sweeping over the Shohoku team.
Suddenly, the red-haired Sakuragi Hanamichi grinned wildly, his expression arrogant. He slapped his chest and loudly declared, "Hahaha! Leave Sento to me!"
His smug expression practically screamed that he was the greatest in the world, as though he had come to challenge a dojo rather than play basketball.
Before he could finish, Takenori Akagi brought down a vicious chop on his head, smashing him straight to the floor.
"Idiot! Do you even know what manners are?"
Sakuragi Hanamichi clutched his head and wailed miserably.
"Ow! Damn gorilla, you started hitting me the moment we arrived!"
At that moment, Tiangang Maoyi stepped forward of his own accord. With a respectful expression, he bowed deeply to Anxi Guangyi.
"I'm truly sorry, Coach Anxi. I should have paid you a visit myself, yet I made you come here in person today. I sincerely apologize."
"Not at all, not at all. There's no need for such formality."
Anxi Guangyi chuckled and waved a hand, looking kindly amused.
The Ryonan players exchanged bewildered looks at this sight.
"That's Shohoku's coach? Our coach is actually treating him with such respect!"
Yueye Hongming lowered his voice, his face full of surprise.
Shishang Liang'er narrowed his eyes as he studied Anxi Guangyi, looking thoughtful.
"That old fat man doesn't look simple."
Just then, Chi Tong spoke calmly. "Anxi Guangyi was once a player on the Japan National Basketball Team. After retiring, he became a university basketball coach, but later resigned for certain reasons before eventually coming to teach at Shohoku."
"Huh?" Everyone froze, their gazes turning toward Chi Tong in unison.
"Chi Tong, I never expected you to know even the opposing coach's background so clearly!"
Yueye Hongming looked utterly stunned, and the others wore equally astonished expressions.
They had never even noticed Chi Tong investigating Shohoku.
Chi Tong remained calm as he said, "I saw relevant reports before, so I remembered some of it."
"Oh, so that's how it is!"
Everyone suddenly understood.
The moment Shohoku entered, Chi Tong had begun observing them.
They looked more or less the same as they did in his memories. The only question was whether their strength had changed compared to the original story.
Now that Ryonan had him, no one knew how far Shohoku could go. Chi Tong would not go easy on them. It would depend on whether Shohoku could find new life in adversity or fall completely into the abyss.
His gaze shifted to Sakuragi Hanamichi.
At the moment, that guy was joking around with Xiangtian Yanyi, grinning without the slightest hint of nervousness.
Liu Chuanfeng had Sento to deal with him, and the other players were nothing to fear.
The only one who truly required caution was Sakuragi Hanamichi. Though he had only been playing basketball for a few months, he always managed to make unexpected moves that defied common sense during games.
Other than Sendoh and Yu Zhu, the only person who could truly restrain him was Chi Tong himself.
And at present, Ryonan Basketball Team's bench depth was still somewhat lacking.
At that moment, a figure suddenly flashed through his mind. That person had once been a member of the Ryonan Basketball Team, but had left for certain reasons.
Chi Tong's heart stirred. After the game, perhaps he should speak with the coach and see whether that person could return to the team. It should not be too difficult.
Once the two coaches finished exchanging pleasantries, it was time for the captains of both sides to step forward.
Chi Tong remained composed, a proper and polite smile appearing on his face as he slowly walked toward Anxi Guangyi.
On the other side, Takenori Akagi came before Tiangang Maoyi and solemnly extended his hand. "I'm Shohoku's captain, Takenori Akagi. Please guide me."
"Oh, Takenori Akagi, hello!"
Tiangang Maoyi replied with a smile, his tone carrying a hint of teasing. "Yu Zhu has been working hard all this time with defeating you as his goal!"
"I hope you'll show him mercy today and go easy on him!"
Takenori Akagi was slightly taken aback. He then instinctively glanced aside, searching for Yu Zhu.
In his impression, Yu Zhu was Ryonan's captain. He should have been speaking with their coach right now.
But the instant his gaze swept over, his pupils suddenly contracted.
It was not just him. Everyone from Shohoku froze in place, their faces filled with shock.
A crimson figure was slowly walking toward Anxi Guangyi.
A smile rested on Chi Tong's lips. His courtesy carried an unmistakable authority, while his heterochromatic eyes were as deep as an abyss, seeming to devour light itself and instinctively inspiring caution.
Every step he took was steady and powerful. Every gesture naturally carried an aura and dominance that stood above ordinary people.
The instant Anxi Guangyi saw Chi Tong, the pupils behind his glasses abruptly shrank. His usual kindly expression froze, replaced by a flash of alarm.
Even Liu Chuanfeng, who had always been indifferent toward everyone and everything, slightly narrowed his eyes. His gaze was sharp as a blade as he fixed it firmly on Chi Tong, as if confirming something.
Chi Tong stopped before Anxi Guangyi and extended his hand to shake his. His voice was calm and clear. "Hello, Coach Anxi."
"I've long admired your name. I am Chitong Lingyu, captain of Lingnan High School's basketball team."
"Who... who is he?"
"What is he talking about?"
"Did I hear that right?"
"Isn't Yu Zhu Ryonan's captain?"
"This guy says he's the captain. He can't be lying, can he?"
The Shohoku players instantly erupted, voices rising one after another as their faces filled with shock and doubt.
Shohoku Basketball Team's manager was Ayako. She stood to one side, her pretty face frozen as disbelief filled her eyes.
Her full, sensual lips had unconsciously fallen open into an O-shape.
As the person responsible for Shohoku's intelligence, she had personally organized all information on their opponents. Yet she had never heard that Ryonan had changed captains.
What was going on?
Everyone's eyes were now fixed on Chi Tong. The entire gym fell into a strange silence, as though even the air had frozen solid.
To break the deadlock, Tiangang Maoyi stepped forward. A trace of barely concealed pride appeared on his face as he slowly explained, "He is our basketball team's new captain. He only entered high school this year, so it's normal that you haven't heard of him."
"What?"
At those words, the Shohoku players were even more shocked, rendered speechless.
Sakuragi Hanamichi widened his eyes, pointed at Chi Tong, and said in disbelief, "That first-year guy is actually the captain?"
"Then isn't he just like me?"
The moment he finished speaking, an image suddenly flashed through his mind of defeating Takenori Akagi on the court before.
If a first-year can become captain, then can't I become one too?
"Hehehe." The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. Sakuragi Hanamichi's expression gradually shifted from contemplation into a foolish grin full of wild fantasy. However, the rest of Shohoku was nowhere near as optimistic as he was.
