Appearance
Kuzan is a dark-skinned young Marine with an afro and a sleep mask resting on his forehead. Even his breath carries a noticeable chill from his ice powers. 9
- Dark skin
- Afro hairstyle
- Sleep mask worn on his forehead
- Breath that emits cold air 9
Personality
Kuzan is highly competitive and especially interested in unusual powers. Mu Chen's Blood Sharingan immediately catches his attention, leading Kuzan to repeatedly seek a match in order to test both Mu Chen and the mysterious eye technique. 13 15 18
Despite this drive to fight, Kuzan usually remains composed. He does not react to Doberman's teasing, accepts Mu Chen's initial refusal to spar, and openly concedes defeat once Mu Chen decisively wins their duel. 12 19 37
Kuzan possesses a strong protective instinct toward civilians and is troubled by justice that treats innocent lives as expendable. Sakazuki's destruction of Ohara's civilian evacuation ship and the wider Buster Call deeply shake his faith in the World Government. 51 185
Although he initially attempts to uphold his orders at Ohara, Kuzan gradually becomes receptive to Mu Chen's vision of a more just and peaceful world. By the time of the Adventurer Policy crisis, he chooses to trust Mu Chen and assist his plans against World Government interference. 186 187 590
Abilities & Skills
Ice-Ice Fruit
Kuzan possesses the Logia-type Ice-Ice Fruit, allowing him to create and manipulate ice in combat. His powers can cover battlefields, alter the weather, produce defensive structures, and turn his body into ice to evade attacks. 9 13 33 350 351
- Ice Ball — Creates numerous ice projectiles that can be launched in irregular patterns. 34
- Ice Block: Partisan — Forms large ice spears and erupting ice pillars to trap or impale an opponent. 34 36
- Ice Blade — Condenses ice into melee weapons for close-range exchanges. 34 36
- Ice Time — Freezes a target in a large mass of ice; Kuzan briefly traps Mu Chen with this technique. 35
- Ice Time Capsule — Releases a freezing wave that immediately encases its target in ice; Kuzan uses it to freeze Saul. 186
- Ice Block: Pheasant Beak — Launches a massive ice bird as a powerful ranged attack. 36 186
- Ice Age — An immense freezing technique capable of covering an island and sea in thick ice, immobilizing powerful enemies, freezing falling magma, and creating colossal ice formations. 61 351 523
- Ice Dragon — Creates a dragon-shaped ice attack during his rematch with Mu Chen. 351
- Divine Ice Altar — A high-level ice technique used alongside Ice Age during his clash with Mu Chen. 351

Haki and Physical Combat
Kuzan is capable of combining his ice powers with high-level physical combat. His clash with Sakazuki during the Flying Fleet attack fills the sky with opposing ice and fire, and is noted for both fighters' powerful Haki. 48
- Pressures Mu Chen with an ice blade strongly enough to numb Mu Chen's Armament Haki-coated arms. 34
- Continues fighting after being struck by Mu Chen's Third Gate-enhanced Armament Haki punch. 35
- Trades close-range attacks with Mu Chen until his ice blade is ground nearly flat. 36
- Defends against Mu Chen's progressively opened Eight Gates with large-scale ice constructs and Logia evasion during their later rematch. 350
- Forces Mu Chen to use Perfect Susanoo before ultimately losing their rematch, demonstrating combat power considered comparable to an Admiral. 351
Weaknesses
- Kuzan can be caught by Blood Sharingan Genjutsu. While affected, he is unable to defend himself with either his Devil Fruit or Armament Haki. 36 37
- He recognizes that even a brief Genjutsu-induced lapse would be fatal in a battle against genuine powerhouses. 38
- His concern for civilian lives can conflict with more ruthless battlefield tactics, as shown by his dispute with Sakazuki during the Flying Fleet crisis. 51
Relationships
- Adrian Mu Chen — Rival and fellow trainee. Kuzan repeatedly challenges Mu Chen out of curiosity about the Blood Sharingan, later loses their wagered duel, and personally seeks an explanation of Genjutsu afterward. Years later, he insists upon their promised rematch, loses after forcing Mu Chen to unveil Perfect Susanoo, and eventually places his trust in Mu Chen's vision of genuine peace. 13 14 33 37 38 349 350 351 590
- Doberman and Onigumo — Fellow members of the Fighting Trio; all three seek to spar with Mu Chen after his rise in the camp. 19
- Sakazuki — Fellow Marine powerhouse. Their ice-and-fire clash occurs during the Flying Fleet attack on Marineford. Kuzan also clashes ideologically with Sakazuki over protecting civilians and is horrified by Sakazuki's conduct during the Ohara Buster Call. 48 51 185
- Jaguar D. Saul — Kuzan's friend and fellow Marine. During the Ohara incident, Kuzan offers Saul a chance to escape but freezes him after Saul refuses to abandon Olivia and Robin. 185 186
- Olivia and Nico Robin — Kuzan initially regards the Ohara scholars as responsible for the catastrophe and attempts to stop their escape. Mu Chen's intervention and revelations about the World Government force Kuzan to question that belief. 185 186 187
- Marineford civilians — Kuzan shields two civilians from a giant beast during the Flying Fleet crisis and prioritizes civilian protection amid the wider disaster. 50 51
- Drought Jack — Kuzan freezes the Beasts Pirates Calamity with Ice Age during a major battlefield confrontation. 523
Story Role / Major Arcs
Elite Training Camp
Kuzan first appears among the Elite Training Camp's talented trainees. He observes Mu Chen's victory over Tokikake, deduces that Mu Chen's red eyes may be responsible, and challenges him to a fight. Mu Chen initially refuses, leaving Kuzan frustrated but still curious. 9 13 14
Kuzan continues pursuing a match at a tavern gathering and later joins Doberman and Onigumo in agreeing to wait until Mu Chen learns Haki. 18 19
Duel with Mu Chen
After Mu Chen learns Armament Haki, he challenges Kuzan and wagers the use of Kuzan's warship. Kuzan opens with Ice Ball and Ice Block: Partisan, then forces Mu Chen onto the defensive with an ice blade and Ice Time. 33 34 35
Mu Chen breaks free by opening the Third Gate of the Eight Gates. After a prolonged exchange, Kuzan is caught in Genjutsu and struck into a wall by an Armament Haki-coated kick. He admits defeat and later visits Mu Chen to confirm the nature and danger of Genjutsu. 35 36 37 38
Flying Fleet Attack
During Golden Lion Shiki's assault on Marineford, Kuzan clashes with Sakazuki amid the aerial battle. When giant beasts threaten the back streets, he protects civilians with an ice shield and attacks in anger after witnessing the devastation. 48 50
Kuzan's decision to prioritize civilians leads Sakazuki to criticize him for indecision. Later, Kuzan unleashes Ice Age to freeze falling magma and raises an enormous ice pillar to help halt a descending floating island, exhausting himself in the process. 51 61
Ohara Buster Call
As a Vice Admiral during the Ohara Buster Call, Kuzan witnesses Sakazuki order the destruction of a civilian evacuation ship, causing him to question the Marines' justice. He encounters Saul, Olivia, and Robin, offers Saul an opportunity to escape, but refuses to allow Olivia and Robin to leave. 178 185
Kuzan freezes Saul with Ice Time Capsule and attacks Olivia and Robin with Ice Block: Pheasant Beak, only for Mu Chen to intervene. Mu Chen's explanations regarding the scholars, the Celestial Dragons, and God Valley leave Kuzan profoundly shaken and deepen his doubts about the World Government. 186 187
Rematch with Mu Chen
After Mu Chen becomes an Admiral and Kuzan an Admiral Candidate, Kuzan invokes Mu Chen's old promise of a rematch. The two relocate to an uninhabited island, where Kuzan counters Mu Chen's Eight Gates and Armament Haki with ice waves, spikes, shields, icebergs, and widespread freezing attacks. 349 350
Kuzan escalates the duel with Ice Age, Ice Dragon, and Divine Ice Altar, freezing the island and sea on a massive scale. Mu Chen answers with Perfect Susanoo and wins, but Kuzan accepts the result gracefully after demonstrating Admiral-level strength. 351
Admiral Promotion and Adventurer Policy
Kuzan later becomes a Marine Admiral and publicly pledges to support Fleet Admiral Mu Chen in protecting peace across the seas. 588
When the Five Elders use Cipher Pol agents to frame adventurers for crimes in East Blue, Kuzan questions whether Mu Chen can truly fulfill the peaceful world he spoke of at Ohara. Convinced by Mu Chen's resolve, he agrees to carry out Mu Chen's plan to expose the World Government's interference. 590 593
