History

Early Marineford service

Sengoku first appears reprimanding Garp over Den Den Mushi for wandering in Loguetown instead of returning to headquarters, only to be told that Garp had found a promising recruit. 5

After Kong's departure, Sengoku reluctantly accepted the Fleet Admiral position. He regarded the office as an unwanted responsibility, particularly because it required dealing with the World Government and the Five Elders. 75

Golden Lion's assault

During Golden Lion Shiki's assault on Marineford, Sengoku and Kong struggled to locate Shiki's airborne fleet and prepare an effective defense. 42 Sengoku transformed into his golden Buddha Form and engaged Shiki directly, holding the pirate's attention so Zefa could proceed with their pre-arranged operation against the floating island. 46

Shiki's cross-shaped slash and follow-up sword barrage injured Sengoku's Buddha Form and pushed him onto the defensive. 47 After Mu Chen incapacitated Shiki, Sengoku intervened before Mu Chen could kill him and personally fitted the pirate with Seastone shackles. 60

Protection of Mu Chen

Sengoku initially underestimated Mu Chen, but revised his judgment after witnessing the recruit's rapid growth and Conqueror's Haki. 136 He later defended Mu Chen against CP9 director Spandine's investigation into Mu Chen's connection to Dragon, ordering Spandine and his agents out of his office. 131 132

He recognized that Mu Chen had risen from colonel-level strength to a fighter comparable to a vice admiral in less than a year, having defeated Queen and exchanged blows with Kaido. 132

Marineford War

When intelligence confirmed that Whitebeard had allied with Kaido and Charlotte Linlin to attack Marineford, Sengoku rejected postponing Ace's execution; he believed delay would make the Marines appear afraid and surrender the initiative. 512 He accepted Mu Chen's proposal to mobilize the Seven Warlords of the Sea, entrusting Mu Chen to gather the pirates he had recruited. 512 513

Sengoku commanded the Marineford defense from the execution platform, ordering the Marines to fire freely and the Warlords to stop the invading pirate forces. 522 As the battle escalated, he grew furious at Mu Chen and Borsalino for delaying their serious participation while Sakazuki was endangered. 524

After Whitebeard's apparent death and Blackbeard's sealing, Sengoku weighed the heavy Marine losses against Sakazuki's demand to annihilate the retreating pirates. He ultimately ordered a ceasefire, prioritizing the preservation of Marine forces. 549 550

Succession

Following the war, the Five Elders selected Mu Chen—not Sakazuki or Kuzan—as Sengoku's successor. Sengoku announced his retirement and enforced their decision despite Mu Chen's objections. 557

He later agreed to remain Fleet Admiral for two additional years after Mu Chen demanded an extended period of field experience before accepting the office. 558

Personality

Sengoku is duty-bound, practical, and intensely conscious of the human cost of Marine decisions. He consistently favors maintaining stability and preserving Marine lives over Sakazuki's proposals for unchecked escalation, whether facing the Emperors or pursuing the weakened Whitebeard Pirates. 383 549 556

He is also short-tempered when pushed by Garp and Zefa, whose teasing can provoke him into visibly losing his composure. Despite this, he understands Garp well enough to see through his staged resignation and quietly return his justice coat after CP9 leaves. 132 284

Though he serves the World Government, Sengoku resents its interference in Marine affairs. His defense of Mu Chen against CP9 and his eventual willingness to delay his own retirement show that he places the Marines' future above political convenience. 131 132 558
