Background

Newgate was a former member of the Rocks Pirates and belonged to the same generation as Gol D. Roger and Golden Lion Shiki. Roger was a close friend and rival, while Shiki remained one of the few old rivals Newgate felt connected to; Shiki’s capture and later death left him increasingly conscious of his own isolation as an old-era pirate. 63 236

Clash with Mu Chen

After Miss Bakkin and Edward Weevil are killed, Whitebeard summons Mu Chen to the Moby Dick to defend his reputation and address Bakkin’s death. Their discussion turns into an ideological clash when Mu Chen condemns pirates for civilian massacres and Marine casualties committed by crews under Whitebeard’s banner. 376 377

The two fight on an uninhabited island. Whitebeard forces Mu Chen to use Complete Body Susanoo, damages him with a Void-Sundering Slash, and destroys the Susanoo with his strongest attack. Mu Chen eventually exploits Whitebeard’s slower speed to damage his knee and break Murakumogiri’s hilt. 379 380

Following the duel, Whitebeard accepts that Mu Chen’s criticism has merit and changes his crew’s raiding policy to avoid civilian vessels. 382

Ace’s Recruitment

Whitebeard notices Ace’s “D.” name and Roger-like stubbornness, then has Marco locate the Spade Pirates. Ace attacks repeatedly but cannot overcome Whitebeard’s overwhelming strength; his refusal to surrender earns Whitebeard’s respect. 448 449
