Deep in the alley stood an inn. Its signboard was half-worn, its frontage small, with a faded blue cloth curtain hanging at the entrance.
Lu Li walked in. Behind the counter sat a drowsy attendant. Hearing the footsteps, he lifted his eyelids slightly before letting them droop again.
"Room."
"How many?"
"One superior room. Three days."
Lu Li took out several bits of silver and slapped them onto the counter. The attendant opened his eyes, counted the silver, then pulled a key from his waist and handed it over.
"Second floor, third room on the left. Hot water and food cost extra if you want them."
"I do."
He took out a few more copper coins. The attendant accepted the money, turned and shouted toward the kitchen, then resumed dozing.
With the key in hand, Lu Li went upstairs and pushed open the room's door. Inside were a wooden bed, a square table, and a chair. The window was shut, and the air was somewhat stuffy.
He walked to the window and pushed it open. Outside lay a narrow alley, with the rear wall of another inn across from it. There was nothing to see, but it was quiet and secluded.
Before long, the attendant brought up hot water and food. After setting them down, he withdrew.
Lu Li shut the door, slid the bolt into place, then checked the window once more. Only after confirming there was no problem did he sit beside the bed.
He took three oil-paper packets and a small celadon bottle from his robes, arranging them one by one on the table.
