Background / History
Ruan Su survived alone in the mountains for at least a year before Qin Yi found her. The two later fled from Great Qin to Ancient Shu amid the refugee tide and became siblings despite having no blood relation. 6 12 22
After entering Immortal Guest House, she was made to drink Muteheart Soup, which damaged her vocal cords and left her barely able to speak for years. Her unusual constitution gradually restored some of her speech. 6 11
She became an Iron Guard and built a fearsome reputation around Yellow Bamboo Town, particularly among human traffickers. She generally avoided killing without cause, but anyone who threatened Qin Yi or her younger brothers risked immediate violence. 8 16
Nie Junyue sought to make her his son's principal wife. Ruan Su considered the proposal out of practicality and gratitude toward Immortal Guest House, but ultimately chose to disfigure herself rather than accept it. 7 9
Appearance
Ruan Su was initially described as a tall, thin girl of roughly twelve or thirteen. Her delicate appearance contrasts sharply with her physical strength and battlefield brutality. 5
- Long black hair, usually left loose and often used to hide her scars. 5 11
- One side of her face is badly scarred by burns, while the other is described as flawless. 5
- Dark eyes that can become bloodshot, numb, and terrifyingly intent during combat. 5
- Her damaged vocal cords gave her an initially dry, hoarse, halting voice. 6
- Often fought barefoot and carried weapons scavenged from enemies. 5
Personality
Ruan Su is simple-hearted, direct, and intensely devoted to Qin Yi. She prioritizes his safety over her own comfort, money, health, and ultimately her life. Even when he insists his injuries are minor, she refuses to leave him unaided. 6 10 50
Her instincts are unusually acute. Qin Yi regards her as someone naturally suited to lead others: her beast-like nature drives her to seize responsibility, while her instincts repeatedly guide her toward effective decisions. 22 28
She can be practical and independent, as shown by seriously considering the Immortal Guest House marriage proposal and acting without Qin Yi's knowledge. However, after the failed cultivation attempt and Qin Yi's rescue, she becomes increasingly fearful that he will abandon her, leading to extreme obedience and dependence. 7 9 27 28
Abilities & Skills
Innate Physical Constitution
Ruan Su possesses a physique far beyond ordinary martial artists. Her physical power grows naturally and unpredictably, rather than through ordinary training. 16 19
- Severed a Killing Ape's arm, kicked it across the courtyard, and crushed its skull with an axe and repeated bare-handed strikes. 5
- Caught the severed arm of the Killing Ape while Qin Yi was still trapped in its hand. 5
- Reset her own dislocated ankle without crying out and continued fighting immediately afterward. 5
- Recovers from injuries unusually quickly; wounds on her forearm scabbed over by the next morning. 11
- Her speed and strength could contend with Fu Ming's physical movements, though she lacked the technique and cultivation methods needed to overcome him. 49
Weapon Mastery
Ruan Su is most recognized for her use of a long axe, though she is also highly skilled with blades. 8 32
- Uses axes to capitalize on her overwhelming strength; a damaged axe can still be used as a hammer. 32
- Received systematic blade training and practical sparring from Peng Jun. 17 32
- Wielded Meng Peijiu's short Patterned Blade precisely enough to sever a beastified corpse's hand and help create an opening for Qin Yi's finishing attack. 47
- Her attacks with the short blade became too fast for Qin Yi to follow clearly. 32
Cultivation Aptitude
Ruan Su can learn cultivation forms quickly, but her body cannot properly contain or convert Spirit Resonance. 23 24
- Stabilized the Disrupted Scripture breathing method within ten cycles. 24
- Siphoned Spirit Resonance on a far larger scale than Qin Yi once she entered Cultivation Sight. 24
- Cannot safely absorb the resonance she gathers; excess energy caused bleeding from all seven orifices and unconsciousness. 24
- Remains unable to cultivate normally despite wanting to do so. 34
Instinctive Leadership
Ruan Su's instincts and nature make her a natural “torchbearer” capable of leading others through danger, though these qualities were suppressed by her dependence on Qin Yi. 22 28
- Makes effective choices through feeling and instinct even when she cannot fully articulate her reasoning. 22
- Protects weaker people from traffickers and threats around Yellow Bamboo Town. 16
- Her instinctive independence weakens after the failed cultivation incident, when fear of abandonment becomes dominant. 27 28
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Long-handled rusty axe — Her signature weapon during her Iron Guard service and the Killing Ape battle. 5 8
- Tang Saber — Used briefly against the Killing Ape before its blade warped from the collision. 5
- Patterned Blade — A high-grade short blade obtained through Meng Peijiu; it remained intact after cutting through hardened flesh and produced brief blue flames upon contact. 32 47
- Spirit robe — Clothing given to her by Qin Yi that blocked Fu Ming's slash across her waist and abdomen. 47
- Embroidered Dagger — Her dagger, later used by Qin Yi during his fight with Fu Ming. 51
- Snowfrost — A scar-treatment medicine gifted by Nie Junyue for her burn scars. 11
Relationships
- Qin Yi — Her adoptive younger brother and the center of her life. Ruan Su protects, carries, feeds, and spends her earnings on treating him; she ultimately dies shielding him from Fu Ming. 6 10 44 50
- Nie Junyue — Proprietor of Immortal Guest House and her former employer. He values her as a growing martial asset, attempted to bind her through a marriage proposal, and later expressed regret after her death. 7 11 51
- Peng Jun — Fellow Iron Guard and practical martial mentor. Ruan Su once rescued his son from traffickers, and he later sparred with her and trained her blade work. 17
- Luo Liuyi — A hostile associate from Immortal Guest House who demeaned Ruan Su's past and resented her. 11
- Meng Peijiu — A dangerous and ambiguous contact whose goods and weapons strengthened Ruan Su's combat ability; Qin Yi remained wary of her intentions. 30 32 47
- Fu Ming — The Path cultivator who fatally wounded Ruan Su. She resisted him long enough to protect Qin Yi and injured him with her final counterattack. 49 50
Story Role / Major Arcs
Killing Ape Incident
Ruan Su returns home blood-soaked after eliminating the bandits who had threatened the siblings. Finding Qin Yi trapped by a male Killing Ape, she enters a state of murderous fury, rescues him, and brutally kills the creature despite a dislocated ankle. 5
Immortal Guest House Conflict
As an Iron Guard, Ruan Su becomes valuable enough for Nie Junyue to seek her as his son's principal wife. Her refusal, self-disfigurement, and resistance to efforts to isolate her from Qin Yi intensify the conflict with Immortal Guest House. 7 10 11
Failed Cultivation and Dependence
Qin Yi teaches Ruan Su the Disrupted Scripture. Although she enters Cultivation Sight and gathers immense Spirit Resonance, her body fails to process it; Qin Yi saves her through the Qi-Induction Ritual at severe cost to himself. Her fear of losing him afterward greatly deepens her dependence. 23 24 25 27
Battle Against Fu Ming
Ruan Su and Qin Yi coordinate to defeat a beastified cultivator, with Ruan Su drawing its attention so Qin Yi can decapitate it. She later confronts Fu Ming, blocks his attacks with her spirit robe and blade, and continues fighting despite catastrophic injuries. 47 49
Sacrifice and Aftermath
Ruan Su throws Qin Yi away from Fu Ming's killing range, freezes her own right arm while blocking the Edict Sword, and counterattacks strongly enough to injure Fu Ming. She dies after signaling to Qin Yi that she is leaving. 50
Qin Yi spends a year at their former home after her death, then kills Fu Ming in revenge. He later discovers that the Northern Phoenix Immortal Clan's ritual had been designed around Ruan Su's Nirvana rather than around him. 51 53
