Background
Buggy was formerly an apprentice aboard the Roger Pirates alongside Red-Haired Shanks. He sailed the Grand Line with Roger’s crew and witnessed the clash of Roger and Whitebeard, giving him an unusual understanding of the threat posed by Conqueror’s Haki. He also retains a powerful network of connections from his time on the Pirate King’s ship. 17 21 22
Before gaining Devil Fruit powers, Buggy possessed the ultimate-gold Child of the Sea trait. It gave him extraordinary swimming talent and allowed him to increase his kingly bearing—and therefore his Haki—simply by swimming in seawater. The trait reportedly gave the young Buggy enough confidence to provoke Whitebeard. 21
After eating the Chop-Chop Fruit, Buggy became unable to swim, invalidating Child of the Sea. The loss of the trait and its resulting spiritual backlash are presented as the cause of his decline from a bold apprentice pirate into the fearful, erratic captain seen in East Blue. 21
Appearance
Buggy is distinguished by his conspicuous red nose. His Chop-Chop Fruit lets him separate his body into independently moving pieces. 18 21
- Prominent red nose 18
- Can detach his limbs, torso, and head during combat 21 25
- Often fights with floating hands wielding daggers 23 24
Personality
Buggy is greedy, cruel, and highly theatrical. He takes pride in the destructive force of the Buggy Ball, seeks to conquer the Grand Line, and treats his crew and recruits as expendable tools. He forces Nami to fire on the imprisoned Luffy as a test of loyalty and orders his men to kill her when she refuses. 20
Despite his bluster, Buggy is deeply fearful of genuine power. Hearing Rayson's “Heavenly King” reputation and sensing his Conqueror’s Haki immediately unsettles him; he recognizes that such power represents the potential of a major figure on the Grand Line. 22
His hatred of Shanks remains a major emotional trigger. The sight of Luffy’s straw hat provokes him, and he blames Shanks for the circumstances that led to him eating the Chop-Chop Fruit. 23
Abilities & Skills
Chop-Chop Fruit
Buggy possesses the dark-purple Chop-Chop Fruit, which allows him to split his body into separate floating pieces for offense, defense, and evasion. 21
- Immune to slashing attacks; Zoro’s cuts cannot harm him. 22 23
- Can evade attacks by dividing into many smaller pieces. 24
- Can launch detached hands armed with daggers through Chop-Chop Flying Knives. 23
- Can reassemble his body with Chop-Chop Body Assembly. 25
- His feet must remain on the ground; restraining them disrupts the balance of his floating body. 24
- As a Devil Fruit user, he cannot swim, which invalidated his Child of the Sea trait. 21
Buggy Ball
Buggy’s signature weapon is the Special Buggy Ball, an explosive cannon shell produced through his Cannon Proficiency. 20 21
- Its explosion can demolish numerous buildings and tear through the center of a town. 20
- He uses it both as an intimidation tool and as a supposed “ultimate move.” 20
- A Buggy Ball fired by Zoro knocks him down but does not fully defeat him. 22 23
Conqueror’s Haki
Buggy possesses unawakened pale-gold Conqueror’s Haki. 21
- His trait remained unawakened during the Orange Town conflict. 21 22
- His past experience aboard the Roger Pirates lets him recognize and withstand a basic burst of Rayson's Conqueror’s Haki. 22
Child of the Sea — Invalid
Buggy once possessed the ultimate-gold Child of the Sea trait, but it became invalid after he ate the Chop-Chop Fruit. 21
- Granted unmatched swimming talent and supremacy in water. 21
- Swimming in seawater continuously strengthened the user’s kingly bearing and Haki potential. 21
- Rayson plundered the trait after Luffy rendered Buggy unconscious; the system restored it in an awakened state for Rayson. 24 25
Unrivaled Connections
As a former Roger Pirate, Buggy has the special Unrivaled Connections trait. 21
- Provides a powerful network of former connections.
- Allows him to turn danger into fortune. 21
Equipment
- Special Buggy Ball cannon — Fires explosive Buggy Balls capable of widespread destruction. 20
- Daggers — Used by his detached hands for Chop-Chop Flying Knives. 23
Relationships
- Monkey D. Luffy — Enemy. Buggy becomes enraged by Luffy’s straw hat because of its connection to Shanks; Luffy exposes his foot-based weakness and defeats him with Gum-Gum Bazooka. 23 24
- Rayson — Enemy. Rayson identifies and plunders Buggy’s Child of the Sea trait after arranging for Buggy to be knocked unconscious. 21 24
- Nami — Temporary recruit and intended victim. Buggy accepts her apparent defection, then orders her to fire a Buggy Ball at Luffy to prove her loyalty. 19 20
- Roronoa Zoro — Enemy. Buggy’s Chop-Chop Fruit nullifies Zoro’s slashing attacks, forcing Zoro to use a Buggy Ball against him instead. 22 23
- Red-Haired Shanks — Former fellow apprentice on the Roger Pirates and the target of Buggy’s enduring resentment. 17 21 23
- Gol D. Roger — Former captain. Buggy served as an apprentice aboard Roger’s crew. 17 21
Story Role / Major Arcs
Orange Town Arc
Buggy’s crew steals the Grand Line sea chart that Nami had taken from the Marine base, drawing Rayson, Luffy, and Zoro toward Orange Town. 17 18
After Nami infiltrates the Buggy Pirates by delivering the bound Luffy and returning the chart, Buggy welcomes her into his crew without suspecting her deception. 19
Buggy demonstrates the Special Buggy Ball by destroying part of Orange Town, then demands that Nami fire another one at Luffy. Nami refuses, leading Buggy to order her execution before Zoro and Rayson intervene. 20
Rayson incapacitates Buggy’s crew with Conqueror’s Haki, while Zoro fires a Buggy Ball at Buggy because sword attacks are ineffective against the Chop-Chop Fruit. 22
Buggy withstands the initial assault and battles Luffy. Luffy discovers that Buggy’s feet must stay on the ground, captures them, and defeats him with Gum-Gum Bazooka. 23 24
While Buggy is unconscious, Rayson plunders his Child of the Sea trait. After Buggy wakes and attempts to retaliate, Nami binds most of his scattered body parts and Luffy launches his upper body into the sky. 24 25
