The name "Pain" was actually transliterated from the English word "Pain," meaning suffering and punishment. This naming was not arbitrary, but a carefully designed piece of foreshadowing by the author, Masashi Kishimoto.

In the manga, Nagato named himself Pain, clearly echoing the suffering and punishment contained within the word "Pain." Pain's duty was to nurture peace within the cycle of suffering.

The Six Paths of Pain consisted of six corpses Nagato had assembled from the dead. He modified these bodies, not only inserting chakra-conducting black rods into their faces and bodies, but also implanting nail-shaped chakra receivers within them. In addition, Nagato projected Rinnegan identical to his own onto all six corpses.

After being modified, the six corpses were each assigned a different path: Deva Path, Naraka Path, Human Path, Asura Path, Preta Path, and Animal Path. Together, these six paths formed the whole known as "Pain."

Using the black rods and the Rinnegan's abilities, Nagato controlled the six Pains from behind the scenes. He could employ all manner of Rinnegan powers, allowing the six Pains to display formidable strength in battle. At the same time, the six Pains could use the Rinnegan's Visual Sharing trait to observe their enemies, allowing them to coordinate their attacks more effectively.

Even if an enemy tried to circle behind one Pain and launch a sneak attack, another Pain would shadow the enemy like a ghost, monitoring every movement. Moreover, the Naraka Path possessed a special ability—it could revive Pains who had already fallen in battle! Thus, even if an enemy managed to defeat one Pain with great difficulty, they might instantly find themselves facing a brand-new, completely unharmed opponent.
