Background / History
Lin Yan was a modern youth and One Piece fan who crossed into the Pirate World. Viewing ordinary people as expendable in a world dominated by monsters, he resolved to become strong enough to control his own fate. His Heavens Fishing System allowed him to obtain powers and items from multiple worlds in exchange for bait earned through missions. 1
After a year of fishing, Lin Yan opened 365 Fine Blind Boxes and received a massive initial power base. He consumed the system-provided Rumble-Rumble Fruit, learning that fished Devil Fruits carry none of the normal seawater or Seastone weaknesses. 1 2 His first major action was pursuing the 150-million-Beli Battle Axe, both to earn mission bait and to stop the Battleaxe Pirates’ raid; he killed the captain in a single movement and identified himself to the survivors only as “Lin.” 2 3 4
Izo brought Lin Yan into contact with the Whitebeard Pirates. Lin Yan accepted recruitment after negotiating for doubled pay and “five insurances and one housing fund,” then swiftly demonstrated that he could defeat the crew’s commanders while holding back much of his strength. 10 11 23 Whitebeard subsequently created the Seventeenth Division for him after Lin Yan defeated thirteen division commanders in under two hours. 28
As commander, Lin Yan recruited former Marine Admiral Zephyr after defeating him, then added Issho and Ryokugyu following separate battles. 37 40 45 49 He later liberated Impel Down’s prisoners after defeating Magellan and helped shift the Marineford conflict by intercepting Akainu’s attack and confronting Sengoku and Garp. 81 86 97
Seeking treasure needed to cure Whitebeard, Lin Yan used a time-travel item and was displaced into the past. The resulting temporal deviation gave him the status of Faceless Appearance, obscuring his appearance and blurring witnesses’ memories of his methods after he left that era. 148 149 During this period, he allied with Fisher Tiger, infiltrated Mary Geoise, freed enslaved people, destroyed their explosive collars, and created a diversion for their escape. 152 155 158 159
Lin Yan protected the young Boa Hancock and her sisters from the Celestial Dragons, entrusted Hancock with the Love-Love Fruit, and later reunited with Fisher Tiger after returning to his own era. 157 165 180 203 His later rise included gaining Excalibur, defeating Mihawk to be acknowledged as the New World’s greatest swordsman, and boarding the autonomous Time Train when it appeared during a World Government attack. 219 304 307
Appearance
Lin Yan commonly conceals himself beneath a cloak when operating under the effects of Faceless Appearance. In the past era, witnesses cannot clearly perceive his face, and their later memories of his appearance and abilities become indistinct. 149 150
- Uses cloaks and hoods to avoid recognition when necessary. 150 295
- His Mangekyō Sharingan manifests as distinctive tomoe-patterned eyes. 37 96
- His Rinnegan later replaces the Mangekyō Sharingan’s appearance in both eyes. 219
- Often fights with lightning surrounding his body, giving observers the impression of a thunder god. 37 111
Personality
Lin Yan is confident, irreverent, and highly conscious of his own strength. He treats powerful institutions—including the Marines, World Government, and Celestial Dragons—with open contempt, and he is willing to fight overwhelming odds rather than submit. 36 206 242 He can also be playful and mercenary, as shown by his salary negotiations, entrance-fee scheme against the Whitebeard Pirates, and habit of provoking opponents for amusement. 11 20 18
He is a deliberate strategist beneath his casual demeanor. Lin Yan feigns weakness to exhaust enemies, uses emotional pressure against stronger opponents, and employs deception when protecting people or concealing temporal interference. 18 94 168 Although he does not consider himself wholly benevolent, he repeatedly intervenes against slavery and piracy, protects allies and civilians from unnecessary harm, and reserves particular ruthlessness for enemies he considers irredeemable. 3 158 288

- Conqueror’s Haki is powerful enough to disfigure enemy corpses beyond recognition. 460

- Kami-e lets him evade attacks by making his body move like a weightless leaf or flowing water. 485

- Switches seamlessly among spears, staffs, sabers, swords, hammers, and other weapons. 152
- Can identify and strike the weakest point of an opponent’s technique. 188

- Temporarily pushes Lin Yan beyond his normal limits at the cost of treasure. 181
- Can modify Devil Fruit side effects, as demonstrated when he prepared the Love-Love Fruit for Boa Hancock. 180
