History

Decline, Betrayal, and Lin Yan's Recruitment

Before Lin Yan's arrival, the crew has reached the summit of the New World but has become complacent and arrogant. Whitebeard recognizes that this atmosphere is dangerous, especially as his old injuries and illness worsen 12 13.

Satch's murder and Marshall Teach's defection deepen Whitebeard's fear that a major crisis is approaching. He begins looking for power capable of reinforcing the crew and securing its future 12.

Izo encounters the aftermath of Lin Yan's destruction of the Battleaxe Pirates and recruits him with an offer of doubled salary and benefits. Whitebeard personally welcomes Lin despite widespread resentment from crew members who see the newcomer's reception as an insult to their status 5 11 13 14.

Lin proves his strength against the crew's fighters and is formally accepted. Whitebeard subsequently establishes the Seventeenth Division with Lin as commander 21 25 29.

Marineford War

The Marines publicly announce Ace's execution, using him to force a confrontation with the Whitebeard Pirates. After internal debate, Whitebeard commits the crew to war rather than abandon Ace 65 66.

The crew advances on Marineford with its allied fleets, division commanders, and affiliated crews. Whitebeard's arrival is followed by an immediate assault using the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, while the commanders lead the main force against Marines, vice admirals, Pacifistas, and the Shichibukai 69 70 72 84.

The Seventeenth Division reverses the battle's momentum. Lin Yan secretly frees 20,000 Impel Down prisoners and brings them into the war, easing the crew's numerical disadvantage 82 92 93. He later delays the Marines' upper command alone so Whitebeard's forces can withdraw aboard the four Moby Dicks 103 104.

The Whitebeard Pirates rescue Ace and emerge as the victors of the war, becoming the first pirate force stated to defeat the Marines in more than 800 years 105.

Reconstruction

Victory comes at severe cost. Nearly half of the crew's manpower is lost, Whitebeard remains ill, and the organization is forced to restrict itself to basic operations while rebuilding 118.

Lin Yan offers the Impel Down prisoners a place in the crew; roughly 90 percent accept, while several Supernovas depart to pursue their own ambitions. Buggy specifically joins the Seventeenth Division, while Crocodile also accepts Whitebeard's protection 109.

Whitebeard later delegates full authority to Lin during his recuperation. The upper ranks agree to hold their position and recover their strength rather than overextend the weakened crew 122.
