Strength and Assets
Division Commander Corps
The original sixteen division commanders are regarded as elite New World combatants, with bounties stated to begin around 500 million Beli. Their strength and Whitebeard's reputation make major powers treat them with caution 12.
- Jozu blocks and redirects Mihawk's charged slash, protecting Whitebeard during Marineford 73.
- Vista, Namur, and Izo lead close-quarters assaults against Marine forces and vice admirals 72.
- Marco uses his Phoenix Fruit to repel Kizaru and attempt a direct rescue of Ace 75.
- The commanders' battlefield performance initially drives Marine forces back and secures much of Marineford Bay 73.
Whitebeard's Power
Whitebeard's Tremor-Tremor Fruit is the crew's central strategic deterrent.
- He creates a seaquake and a tsunami large enough to threaten Marineford and its 100,000-man Marine force 70.
- His Air Quake shatters Aokiji's ice spears and overwhelms the admiral before Aokiji reforms his ice body 71.
- After Squard's betrayal, Whitebeard launches three Tremor-Tremor Fruit strikes that nearly destroy Marineford 83.
- Even while injured, he tears open blocking warships to cover the fleet's retreat 103.
Seventeenth Division
The Seventeenth Division becomes the crew's decisive new source of high-level strength during the Marineford War.
- Lin Yan defeats or suppresses Sengoku, Garp, and Akainu, then remains behind to delay the Marine pursuit during the evacuation 97 101 103 104.
- Issho battles Akainu and uses meteor-based attacks against Marineford 87 105.
- Ryokugyu defeats Jack with a single punch and later uses Deep Forest Emergence and Wood Human Technique to pressure Kizaru and reshape the battlefield 52 91.
- Zephyr, a former Marine admiral, fights on the crew's side despite his history with the Marines 52 86.
- Aokiji later joins the division after a physical duel with Lin Yan ends in a draw 144.
Fleet and Territory
- Moby Dick — Whitebeard's flagship and the crew's primary base of operations 14.
- Four Moby Dicks — The flagship and three smaller mother-and-child ships surface at Marineford in a pincer formation 69.
- Fish-Man Island — A territory under Whitebeard's protection; Big Mom Pirates occupy it while the crew is engaged at Marineford 109.
- Marineford expedition force — More than 30,000 personnel, including over 1,600 aboard the Moby Dick, over 200 Seventeenth Division members, and the forty-three allied crews 67.
History
Decline, Betrayal, and Lin Yan's Recruitment
Before Lin Yan's arrival, the crew has reached the summit of the New World but has become complacent and arrogant. Whitebeard recognizes that this atmosphere is dangerous, especially as his old injuries and illness worsen 12 13.
Satch's murder and Marshall Teach's defection deepen Whitebeard's fear that a major crisis is approaching. He begins looking for power capable of reinforcing the crew and securing its future 12.
Izo encounters the aftermath of Lin Yan's destruction of the Battleaxe Pirates and recruits him with an offer of doubled salary and benefits. Whitebeard personally welcomes Lin despite widespread resentment from crew members who see the newcomer's reception as an insult to their status 5 11 13 14.
Lin proves his strength against the crew's fighters and is formally accepted. Whitebeard subsequently establishes the Seventeenth Division with Lin as commander 21 25 29.
Marineford War
The Marines publicly announce Ace's execution, using him to force a confrontation with the Whitebeard Pirates. After internal debate, Whitebeard commits the crew to war rather than abandon Ace 65 66.
The crew advances on Marineford with its allied fleets, division commanders, and affiliated crews. Whitebeard's arrival is followed by an immediate assault using the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, while the commanders lead the main force against Marines, vice admirals, Pacifistas, and the Shichibukai 69 70 72 84.
The Seventeenth Division reverses the battle's momentum. Lin Yan secretly frees 20,000 Impel Down prisoners and brings them into the war, easing the crew's numerical disadvantage 82 92 93. He later delays the Marines' upper command alone so Whitebeard's forces can withdraw aboard the four Moby Dicks 103 104.
The Whitebeard Pirates rescue Ace and emerge as the victors of the war, becoming the first pirate force stated to defeat the Marines in more than 800 years 105.
Reconstruction
Victory comes at severe cost. Nearly half of the crew's manpower is lost, Whitebeard remains ill, and the organization is forced to restrict itself to basic operations while rebuilding 118.
Lin Yan offers the Impel Down prisoners a place in the crew; roughly 90 percent accept, while several Supernovas depart to pursue their own ambitions. Buggy specifically joins the Seventeenth Division, while Crocodile also accepts Whitebeard's protection 109.
Whitebeard later delegates full authority to Lin during his recuperation. The upper ranks agree to hold their position and recover their strength rather than overextend the weakened crew 122.
Crew Culture
Whitebeard frames the crew as a family and treats powerful recruits such as Zephyr, Issho, and Ryokugyu as honored guests rather than disposable assets 85. His response to Ace at Marineford reflects this paternal bond:
“Little Ace, don't be afraid. Dad is right here!” 69
The crew's early hostility toward Lin exposes its pride, but his arrival and Whitebeard's intervention help force a change in attitude. By the aftermath of Marineford, Lin is treated as a central source of confidence and leadership within the organization 13 118 122.
Relationships
- Whitebeard — Captain and paternal center of the crew; personally recruits Lin Yan and later entrusts authority to him while recovering 14 122.
- Portgas D. Ace — Second Division Commander; his imprisonment compels the crew to wage war against the Marines 65 66.
- Lin Yan — Seventeenth Division Commander whose recruitment saves the crew from collapse at Marineford and makes him a trusted leader in its reconstruction 29 105 118.
- Marshall Teach / Blackbeard — Former member whose betrayal, defection, and role in Ace's capture threaten the crew from within and without 12 27.
- Impel Down prisoners — Emergency reinforcements released by Lin Yan; most later join to avoid Marine retaliation and rebuild the crew's depleted manpower 82 109.
- Marines — Principal enemy during the Marineford War; the conflict ends with the Whitebeard Pirates' successful retreat and public victory 65 105.
- Beasts Pirates — Rival force that exploits the crew's postwar weakness, threatens its borders, and loses personnel to Whitebeard's countermeasures 109 115.
- Big Mom Pirates — Rival Emperor crew that occupies Fish-Man Island during Whitebeard's absence 109.
- Five Elders — Political adversaries who attempt to isolate the crew by portraying Lin Yan as an ally of the World Government 267.
Later Activities
- The crew repels post-Marineford pressure from the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates, using captured enemy personnel as leverage for ransom 114 115.
- Whitebeard personally leads the division commanders to support Lin Yan against Kaido and Charlotte Linlin, reaffirming that the full crew stands behind its Seventeenth Division Commander 227.
- The crew recognizes the Five Elders' attempt to isolate it but remains united and dismissive of the political pressure 267.
- Whitebeard continues fighting during the final war against the World Government, using the Tremor-Tremor Fruit to withstand a catastrophic heavenly beam 391.
- Following the pirates' ultimate victory and the destruction of the World Government and Celestial Dragons, Whitebeard helps the other Emperors establish a new world order 393.
