Background / History

Itachi is an Uchiha prodigy and Konoha ANBU member who had already experienced war and missions at a young age. When he witnesses Naruto strike Lin Yan in the head with a boulder without harming him, Itachi immediately suspects an unfamiliar defensive technique and begins investigating Lin Yan as a possible threat to Konoha. He approaches Lin Yan despite Sasuke's concern and later proposes a spar to test the outsider's true strength. 407 409

During the spar, Itachi uses his Three-Tomoe Sharingan, advanced shuriken techniques, clones, substitution, and Fire Style. He copies several Six Powers techniques after observing them, but his copied Tempest Kick is markedly weaker than Lin Yan's due to insufficient physical conditioning. Lin Yan eventually defeats and freezes him, but calls the match a draw to preserve his dignity. The encounter makes Itachi recognize the limits of both his Sharingan and his body. 409 410 411 412

Lin Yan later trades unrestricted Six Powers instruction for Itachi teaching Naruto chakra refinement. Itachi guides Naruto, Sasuke, and Lin Yan in sensing spiritual and physical energy, explaining the yin–yang basis of chakra. Although wary of Lin Yan's unusual talent and unclear motives, he agrees to the exchange in part because the Six Powers could help protect Sasuke. 413 415

As the Uchiha Clan's conflict with Konoha escalates, Itachi becomes caught between his duty to the village and pressure from his father, Fugaku, and the clan elites. He reports Lin Yan's capabilities to Hiruzen Sarutobi, monitors the outsider, and later reports on the Uchiha Clan's actions to the Hokage. Unable to harm the masked man with physical attacks, Itachi becomes suspicious after witnessing his Sharingan, intangibility, and Wood Release. Obito exploits Itachi's concern for the village by presenting Mangekyō Sharingan mind control or extermination of the Uchiha Clan as possible solutions. Later, Itachi and Shisui infiltrate Amegakure to locate Akatsuki's base after Konoha's defeat. Both activate their Mangekyō Sharingan against the Six Paths of Pain. Personality

Itachi is composed, observant, and highly strategic. Even as a child, he approaches suspicious situations as an ANBU operative would: he gathers information, tests uncertain opponents, and considers the possibility that they may become enemies. Lin Yan's strength repeatedly unsettles him, but Itachi does not allow his surprise to prevent him from analyzing unfamiliar techniques. 407 409 411

He is deeply loyal to Konoha and believes its overall interests must take priority, yet he also feels responsibility toward the Uchiha Clan. This conflict leaves him mentally exhausted, particularly when Fugaku pressures him to provide intelligence on Konoha's leadership.
