Background
A catastrophic war beneath the Imperial Palace forced the Emperor to seal the Webway entrance to prevent Terra from becoming a second Eye of Terror. He then remained upon the Golden Throne for thousands of years, simultaneously suppressing Chaos at the gate and maintaining the Astronomican for humanity's Warp travel. 110
Prolonged enthronement gradually eroded his humanity. Fearing that he could eventually become another being akin to Slaanesh rather than humanity's protector, he repeatedly sought methods to preserve it. 107
During Terra's crisis against the Ork Battle Moon, his decaying body began to emit a faint light, signaling that he was awaiting an opportunity to act. 98
Appearance
The Emperor's appearance depends on his state and the observer.
- On the Golden Throne, he is seen by Xiao Huasheng and Angela as a decaying half-skeleton. 102 103
- Other observers perceive him as an ever-changing, sun-like being whose presence inspires reverence. 102
- His physical avatar is a small bronze-skinned girl with black hair and brown eyes, created by Angela as a soulless vessel. 109
- He later changes the avatar's hair to brown but cannot alter its sex due to the body's durability and construction. 145
- The avatar is often surrounded by golden radiance or a holy-light effect. 109 163
Personality
The Emperor is calculating, patient, and willing to make difficult bargains for the survival of humanity. He normally influences events indirectly through concepts, hints, and selected agents rather than openly descending into reality, viewing direct intervention as dangerous to both the Webway and his own principles. 109 147
He is deeply committed to Terra and the Imperium, refusing to abandon the planet even after the Webway becomes a sealed disaster zone. 164 He also values the Adeptus Custodes as irreplaceable assets and orders their withdrawal when they would be needlessly endangered. 112
Despite his godlike authority, he can be visibly annoyed by Xiao Huasheng's casual treatment of him, particularly her nickname for him and her teasing of his childlike avatar. 106 109 145
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Power
The Emperor possesses overwhelming psychic power, though the amount available through his avatar is limited.
- Communicates telepathically with Xiao Huasheng, who can endure his voice without suffering mental damage. 102 106
- His voice is normally too destructive for even an Adeptus Custodes to withstand. 102 109
- Produces and manipulates light on command, including an impossible “multicolored black” light display used to prove Xiao Huasheng's connection to him. 106
- Creates protective psychic fields capable of dispelling Slaanesh's corrupting influence from Xiao Huasheng's group. 112
- Forms psychic weapons, including golden flame swords and whip-like attacks. 112 163
- Can restore damaged bodies, remove soul-attached parasites, and reconstruct people's humanity from their memories and souls. 105 107
- His full exertion can darken the Astronomican and strain even Angela's specially constructed avatar body. 163
Golden Throne and Webway Suppression
From the Golden Throne, the Emperor restrains the breach beneath Terra while maintaining the Astronomican.
- Personally sealed the Webway entrance after the ancient war beneath the Imperial Palace. 110
- Cannot freely leave the Throne without risking the Webway's stability and Terra's destruction. 110
- Uses pale golden psychic power to seal the Webway gate after Smiling Corpse Mountain's rampage, trapping the entity and preventing further daemonic incursions through that breach. 164
- The final sealing weakens the Astronomican but allows him to walk the world again through his avatar. 164
Avatar Manifestation
Angela creates a soul-less human vessel for the Emperor at the cost of 40% of Lobotomy Corporation's energy, allowing him to descend into the material world without possessing a living person. 109
- The avatar lets him speak audibly and act directly outside the Golden Throne. 109 145
- His manifestation gradually weakens reality's veil, making prolonged use dangerous. 109
- The avatar contains only a fraction of his total psychic power and can be injured by powerful Chaos entities such as S-Sis. 112 114
- It is the only known human-like body capable of bearing him. 162
Fate Manipulation
The Emperor recognizes that he is constrained by fate, while Foundation personnel such as Xiao Huasheng and Reni can act beyond its usual limits. 147
- Repositions Foundation members within the Imperium to create changes outside predetermined outcomes. 147
- Uses Reni's altered role in the War of the Beast to preserve Vulkan from his destined disappearance. 148
- Sends Vulkan to retrieve the Armor of Fate, intending to use its Primarch essence to resurrect Guilliman and change the Imperium's future. 148
Equipment / Items
- Golden Throne — His physical anchor and the mechanism through which he suppresses the Webway breach and maintains the Astronomican. 110
- Avatar vessel — Angela's soul-less, childlike body through which he enters the material world. 109
- Armor of Fate — An incomplete artifact sought as a means of resurrecting a fallen Primarch; it is later revealed to be the centerpiece of Tzeentch's trap. 148 162
Relationships
- Xiao Huasheng — Strategic partner and the only person shown to communicate directly with him through telepathy without harm. He relies on her Reality Warping to repair the Webway and regards her as a crucial asset against fate. 103 106 108 148
- Angela — Negotiates the terms of the Webway alliance and creates his avatar body. The Emperor tests whether she continues to influence Xiao Huasheng's decisions. 103 109 148
- Adeptus Custodes — His personal guardians and most loyal warriors. They regard Xiao Huasheng as his spokesperson after witnessing her command his psychic light. 106 109 110
- Vulkan — His son and agent in the campaign to reshape the Imperium's fate. The Emperor sends him to obtain the Armor of Fate. 147 148
- Queen of Hatred — An ally during the Webway expedition. Her intelligent magic heals the Emperor's avatar after S-Sis corrupts his arm. 112
- S-Sis — A Slaanesh avatar guarding a damaged portion of the Webway. She wounds and suppresses the Emperor's limited avatar during the repair operation. 112 113
- Tzeentch — Uses the Armor of Fate as bait to attack the Emperor's avatar and open the Webway gate beneath Terra. 162 163
Story Role / Major Arcs
Terra Crisis and First Contact
The Emperor summons Xiao Huasheng to the Imperial Palace through the Adeptus Custodes, recognizing her potential to alter predetermined outcomes. She meets him at the Golden Throne and becomes the sole immediate recipient of his telepathic speech. 102 106
He offers Xiao Huasheng unlimited energy in exchange for repairing the Webway. Angela refuses to accept the proposal without a contract and secures terms that include an avatar body and protection for Xiao Huasheng. 103 108 109
First Webway Repair
The Emperor leads Xiao Huasheng, the Adeptus Custodes, Queen of Hatred, and Reni into the Webway. He reserves his limited avatar power while the Custodes fight daemons and Xiao Huasheng performs the repairs. 110 111
When S-Sis intervenes, he shields his allies from her corruption and battles her directly despite his avatar's limited power. 112 113 Xiao Huasheng completes the repair after restoring her energy, while the Emperor's avatar is injured by the resulting shockwave. 114
War of the Beast and Fate Alteration
After Xiao Huasheng returns, the Emperor reveals that the repaired Webway entrance is only the beginning; its core nodes remain corrupt and guarded by Chaos legions. He instead assigns her to help conclude the War of the Beast and recover a lost son. 145
He uses Xiao Huasheng, Reni, and Vulkan as agents outside fate's normal constraints. Reni's intervention changes Vulkan's destined disappearance, enabling the Emperor to employ him in further plans. 147 148
Armor of Fate Trap and Second Webway Crisis
The Emperor receives the incomplete Armor of Fate from the apparent Belisarius Cawl, only for Tzeentch's avatar to reveal itself and attack. 162 Though the Emperor overwhelms Tzeentch's avatar in direct combat, the attack serves its true purpose: opening the Webway gate beneath the Imperial Palace. 163
After Xiao Huasheng deploys Smiling Corpse Mountain into the Warp, the Emperor seals the gate permanently with psychic power. The breach becomes a contained second Eye of Terror, but Terra is spared from further invasion through it. 164
