Background / History

Gong Jiuxiao was once the Holy Son of his sect, but became disillusioned with that identity and indifferent toward returning to his former position. His former sect members, including Gong Lei and Gong Youxia, criticize his apparent lack of ambition; Gong Youxia in particular retains a grudge against him 313.

Despite their treatment of him, Gong Jiuxiao had quietly aided several of his former fellow disciples, including straightening meridians, rescuing them from demonic beasts, and leaving medicine for them. When these acts are exposed, he refuses to reopen old grievances, stating that their debts with him have already been settled 377.

He ultimately abandons his former sect and adopts the dharma name Wangchen, declaring that he is leaving to find himself 318.

Personality

The Fat Monk is compassionate, impulsive, and unusually trusting. He readily tries to help vulnerable people, such as Lin Wanrong and an injured cultivator in Fengzhou, even when Ye Yu warns that the situations may be dangerous 292 361.

His kindness is tempered by naivety. After publicly distributing spirit stones to villagers, he is devastated when rogue cultivators target the village; Ye Yu had secretly arranged for the villagers to be moved, sparing him from finding their bodies 287 288. The incident forces him to confront the consequences of careless charity, though he remains determined to prove his Buddhist beliefs to Ye Yu 288.

The Fat Monk first appears at a teahouse after following Feng Qiwen for several days. He expresses contempt for people who use Buddhism to commit immoral acts 285.

He seeks spirit-stone donations for impoverished villagers, believing the funds will help them survive the winter. Ye Yu warns that good deeds do not necessarily produce good outcomes; rogue cultivators subsequently target the villagers because of the public display of wealth 287 288. Shaken by the lesson, the Fat Monk nevertheless joins Ye Yu and Feng Qiwen on their journey to the Central Continent, intending to persuade Ye Yu to embrace Buddhism 288.

Black Sea and Former Sect

In the Black Sea, he helps Lin Wanrong when others refuse to intervene against Kong Hao and later becomes emotionally attached to Leizhou, rejecting Ye Yu's suspicions about her motives 292 296.

His former sect acquaintances eventually find him. Their contempt for his changed life contrasts with his own desire to let go of the past. After saving Gong Youxia during a conflict, he formally takes the name Wangchen and leaves to pursue Ye Yu 313 318.

Dry Moon Island and Central Continent Travels

The Fat Monk accompanies Ye Yu to Dry Moon Island, where he questions Ye Yu's ruthless decisions but continues to follow him 323. He refuses Gong Youxia's request to leave with her, instead choosing to remain and face the Wang Family's threat alongside Ye Yu 332.

During later travels, he remains a protective but morally conflicted companion. He rushes to rescue an apparently wounded cultivator in Fengzhou, only for Ye Yu to kill the person after recognizing a trap 361.
