Background / History

Born Wang Goudan in Locust Tree Village, Xiaopei County, Wang Congyun grew up alongside Jiang Tu. Dong Daozi selected him for the Daoist Sect, granted him the name “Wang Congyun,” and bestowed the Dao upon him. Four years after entering the sect, he was sent to Dajiang County to secretly investigate the Farmers who had awakened Awakened Wisdom. 4 10

During the Dajiang County spectral calamity, he protected a group of survivors while fleeing for his life. He killed a Many-Faced Specter with blood-infused Daoist true qi, then continued carrying rescued adults and children to safety despite severe exhaustion and injury. 7 He attempted to stabilize a pregnant survivor with true qi, but withdrew it when it began draining her life force rather than healing her. 8

His experiences in Dajiang County made him distrustful of the Daoist Sect. Jiang Tu advised him to conceal any suspicions, obey outwardly, and avoid probing forbidden matters; Wang Congyun adopted this survival strategy and maintained a façade of loyal obedience before Dong Daozi. 12 14

On his second descent from Lingjiang Temple, Wang Congyun built a covert network around New Dajiang County and Lone Goose City. Posing as an unremarkable sect disciple, he contacted Farmers targeted as expendable material, hid those he could save, and transferred survivors toward Green Mountain Lake. 21 32 His rescues eventually accounted for more than one hundred surviving Farmers and were foundational to the Qin Household’s growth. 31

As sect suspicion increased, he cultivated a public image as a wine-and-women-obsessed, pleasure-seeking Daoist. The performance was convincing enough to deceive Dong Daozi after three days of direct observation, allowing Wang Congyun to survive an investigation by portraying himself as a disillusioned but controllable disciple. 41 69

He later severed his overt connection with the Qin Household, using a technique to ensure that even soul-searching would not reveal his memories unless reawakened through contact from a Qin Household Insect Spirit. He warned them that Lone Goose City was likely facing a mass sacrifice of Agricultural Path cultivators. 74 Although his memories of the Qin Household were erased, he retained the emotional imprint of having saved people; witnessing familiar Farmers march toward slaughter nearly caused him to expose himself within the Daoist Sect formation. 82

Wang Congyun began as an eager, talkative, and earnest young disciple, enthusiastically accepting Dong Daozi’s assignment and proclaiming his intent to cultivate diligently. 4 The Dajiang County catastrophe exposed him to the Daoist Sect’s cruelty and transformed that naïveté into vigilance.

He is compassionate to the point of endangering himself, repeatedly risking exposure to rescue Farmers and other civilians. 7 21 31 However, he is also capable of extreme caution: he withholds information even from allies, hides the exact destination of rescued people, and tests Li Xiaobing before accepting her sincerity. 32 33 41

His greatest conflict is between his conscience and the role he must perform inside the Daoist Sect. He can convincingly act cowardly, licentious, broken, or obedient when necessary, yet the suffering of the people he once saved continues to undermine his composure. 41 69 82
