Background / History

Lin Shi is the eldest grandson of the Lin Household and grew up amid its abusive, paranoid family culture. His father, Lin Rui, repeatedly beat him, leaving Lin Shi with an instinctive defensive response in fights; he was also frequently locked in the ancestral hall as a child. 49 139 520

He received medical instruction from Lin Rui's attending physician. Although hired to teach surgery, the doctor recognized Lin Shi's greater aptitude for pharmaceuticals; together, they developed medication later administered to Lin Rui before his death. 161 Lin Shi's involvement in his father's death is never openly admitted, but Lin Lang later cites drug traces in Lin Rui's autopsy report and identifies Lin Shi as the person with access and ability to act. 484

At the Lin Household banquet, Lin Shi exposed the forged paternity arrangement surrounding Lin Shuo, arranged for bodyguards to seize Lin Lang's assistant, and demonstrated that the guards now answered personally to him. This marked his entry into the Lin Household's internal struggle as an independent player rather than Lin Rui's subordinate. 147 148

Old Master Lin later allowed him to visit his mother at a psychiatric hospital on the condition that he join Lin Corporation and serve as a weapon against Lin Lang. Lin Shi accepted, intending to exploit the position while continuing his revenge against the family. 235 271

Personality

Lin Shi is sarcastic, provocative, and intensely guarded. He habitually uses mockery to conceal his intentions, tests the people around him, and treats alliances as transactions rather than bonds of trust. Yan Yi'an directly identifies his sarcasm as a means of hiding himself. 422

He is ruthlessly pragmatic: he believes in superstition only when it is useful, considers people leverage when they can advance his plans, and has little concern for reputation or public opinion. 273 409 477 His resentment toward the Lin Household is equally personal and ideological; he describes its obsession with bloodlines and heirs as “breeding.” 143

Despite his cruelty, Lin Shi is not wholly detached from those he accepts as his own. He takes a bullet intended for Yu Bai, protects Yu Bai's identity when threatened by Yan Yi'an, and is visibly more cautious when Yu Bai's safety is involved. 424 445 487 He nevertheless struggles to interact with people who have no direct interest tied to him, including Shen Fangli. 508

Abilities & Skills

Strategic Manipulation

Lin Shi excels at exploiting insecurity, greed, and family rivalries to turn opponents against one another.

  • Anticipated and exposed the forged paternity scheme involving Lin Shuo. 148
  • Used a staged relationship with Su Su to appear incompatible with the Yan Household and gain Old Master Lin's trust. 179
  • Manipulated workers with compensation offers while redirecting their anger toward Lin Lang. 339
  • Used Fifth Uncle's daughter as leverage to secure cooperation against the Lin Household. 428
  • Lured Lin family members to the old residence by spreading rumors that the family fortune would be divided. 519

Pharmaceuticals and Medical Knowledge

Lin Shi has formal exposure to surgery and notable talent in pharmaceuticals.

  • Developed medication with his former medical tutor that was used on Lin Rui. 161
  • Developed a drug intended to combat transplant-rejection reactions, rather than an anticancer drug. 518
  • Understands enough medical risk to refuse a proposed liver donor and later admit that he fears pain. 450 453

Corporate Control

Lin Shi is capable of taking command in a crisis, though he views power primarily as a means to execute his plans.

  • Joined Lin Corporation under Old Master Lin's conditions and later used the position to challenge Lin Lang. 235 271
  • Took over company operations during the stock-market crisis surrounding Lin Lang. 465
  • Managed public opinion and stock-price concerns before a shareholders' meeting. 481
  • Secured the chairmanship after his recovery and used the family register and financial benefits to compel obedience. 518

Networks, Surveillance, and Coercion

Lin Shi builds personal forces rather than relying solely on the Lin Household.

  • Commands personal bodyguards who can detain and interrogate targets. 147 148
  • Works with Yu Bai, whose hacking and investigative capabilities allow them to monitor the Lin Household and gather leverage. 422 424
  • Keeps the young monk under his control after extracting information about Lin Lang's foreknowledge. 410 411
  • Operates a surveillance room during the final Lin Household death game. 519

Equipment / Items

  • Custom jade dice — engraved by Lin Shi with six methods of death; he uses them to resolve “decision-making paralysis” over how to eliminate someone. 345
  • Voice recorder — used to preserve Su Su's claims about being a “protagonist” and present them to Yan Yi'an. 283
  • Personal bodyguards — a force personally loyal to him rather than the Lin Household. 148
  • Satellite phone — used to call Yan Xianjue shortly before his final plan concludes. 520

Relationships

  • Lin Rui — Father and longtime abuser. Lin Shi's medical work became entangled with Lin Rui's death, though Lin Shi never openly confesses responsibility. 49 161 484
  • Lin Shi's mother — A manipulative parent whom Lin Shi treats as a “test subject.” He allows her hope of escape before planning to recapture her, and later confronts her over their mutual understanding of his vengeance. 344 394
  • Old Master Lin — Grandfather and principal target of Lin Shi's revenge. Old Master Lin attempts to use him as a blade against Lin Lang, while Lin Shi plans to turn that blade back on the family. 235 179
  • Lin Lang — Uncle, corporate rival, and enemy within the Lin Household. Their conflict escalates from paternity fraud and corporate maneuvering to assassination attempts, share battles, and Lin Lang's death. 148 341 483 514
  • Yu Bai — Cousin, assistant, hacker, and closest accomplice. Yu Bai disciplines Lin Shi but also protects him, while Lin Shi takes a bullet for Yu Bai and shields his identity. 402 411 424 445
  • Yan Xianjue — Initially a school rival who repeatedly fights with him; later a wary ally and business partner. Yan Xianjue eventually recalls knowing Lin Shi in childhood and becomes one of the last people Lin Shi contacts. 49 424 487 520
  • Yan Yi'an — A strategic adversary turned conditional ally. Yan Yi'an gains leverage over Lin Shi, then provides resources and protection in exchange for cooperation against the Lin Household. 422 424 425
  • Su Su — Former public lover and mutual manipulator. Lin Shi admits he recognized her intentions from the beginning, informed the court of her whereabouts, and used their relationship for his own ends. 271 272
  • Lin Shuo — Purported illegitimate son of Lin Rui. Lin Shi exposes that Lin Lang used Lin Shi's hair to forge Lin Shuo's paternity report. 137 148
